well, I know how to add smilies to forums (ofcourse) but recently I added one and like 1-2hours later I got the broken thumbnail so I removed it..I tried adding it again and it didn't work, I got the thumbnail thing again. I have tried various sites that host images and tried a range of smilies and I still get the broken image.

You are supposed to put a local URL to your smiley, something like: images/smilies/mysmiley.gif not the URL to a photo sharing site. It probably was never working and after 1 or 2 hours your browser cache timed out. Use the "Upload Smilie" option to upload the smiley locally to your server.
