View Full Version : Integrate PHPNuke with vBulletin
PHP Nuke is a great piece of software
vB is a great piece of software
Has anyone out there begun to think on how to integrate the two into one package?
H
Well I had no idea what PHP Nuke was, so I went out and searched for it. I have to say thanks for bringing this up! I've been searching for a Web Portal / News system for a new site I am developing as an enhancement to my existing content, and this looks like it fits the bill perfectly.
I would really love to see both PHP Nuke and vBulletin integrated, it would really make it a win-win. :)
-Chris
It is a very good software but has one problem it is not compatible with php4.0
phpnuke is now php 4 combatible.
Yes - I want this NOW! I've been looking around for a decent portal style system for nearly a year...
Where can I find the site in question ? I keep getting lead up dead end paths each time I try and search for it :(
http://www.ncc.org.ve/php-nuke.php3
or in english
http://www.ncc.org.ve/php-nuke.php3?op=english
I have been playing with it alittle and it is the best one i have seen i have played with alot it is very easy to install and configure. You can see a test of it here
http://www.coolsurfin.com/index.php3
It works fine on php4 now
this is a test site so feel free to play alittle if you want
I use PHPWeblog (http://phpweblog.org) for my main site. Also there's phpThatware, http://www.atthat.com which alot of the phpnuke code is based from.
[Edited by BenchRacer on 08-23-2000 at 05:10 PM]
wow phpnuke is just what i have been looking for, for my site anime2001.com :D
ya it says in phpnuke that it was based ona alot of php portal systems. but phpnuke is the most stable and has more better features than the rest. but my question is what do you mean integrate? the user system? or what.
i think they mean the comments go through vbulletin as threads if i am correct ?
not necessairly but possible. more important is tying in the user table. can the vb db and the nuke db be merged. none of the tables have the same name. etc...
h
Yes what i would like to see is the members be able to login with their username and password from VB so that way they would not have to have different usernames and passwords.
PHP-nuke is pretty good (patched up version of That-ware)
yet I always had problems with the header (the whole styles thing is buggy)
The best thing is still to make your own backend ;)
Just so you know, I've been running a modified PHPSlash integrated into Vbulletin (sorta -- it works for the most part) over at http://www.highervoltage.net/
Whenever a new article is create, an associated thread is created in my news forum, so when someone clicks on an article page, they can go directly to the thread for that particular article and start making comments.
--red
i am not sure what all these php news scripts can do, but is it possible to have a php news script posting news across several domain sites on the same server ? and different servers ?
the reason i ask is my vb is the forum for several of my domain sites related to anime. it would be nice to define categories (site domains) to post news... is that possible...?
i have 10 sites excluding the forum and another 8 in the works...
Since the data is stored from within a mysql database, it'd be easy to have different sites pull the data from the database.
Different servers -- yes.. but you'd have to consider the performance aspect.
--red
bascily you just install vbulletin in the same folder as php nuke
then in the following files:
index.php
search.php
forumdisplay.php
and so on...
just don't put it in newthreads.php and newreply.php, because those files seem to allready contain header information.
put
if(!isset($mainfile)) { include("mainfile.php3"); }
include("config.php3");
include("header.php3");
below the first line,then put
include("footer.php3"); just before the last line
that's just doing it quickly....
if anyone else takes the time to put it in all vbulletin pages without errors please post here :)
Is there a windows version available? I searched the site, and could not find one. I'm uploading via a computer that has win 98 to a cobalt raq3 server. Or are there any other programs like this one, that don't require a linux OS?
Thanks in advance
[Edited by steven on 08-25-2000 at 03:16 PM]
well php-nuke hasn't been tested on windows yet I think. But since it requires PHP and mySQL it should probably work.
OK, thanks for the links. What i'm actually looking for is something more akin to Just for you (http://www.fudgecakedesign.co.uk/justforyou/) which allows users to customise our homepage, etc. This is the feature which i'm most in need of - I want them to be able to add certain features to the homepage - ie we import news links from several major sites, we have active topics from the forum, today's TV, etc, etc. I'd like all this customisable by the user - but to use the vBulletin member information to avoid having to register twice.
I contacted the author of that package, but had no response at all from him :( Anyone else any ideas ?
This is incredible. Integrating the 2 is key. Higher voltage.net almost has it, but I'd like to see the article and the replies in the same page.

Wow, just looking over the increased functionality possible opens a whole new vista. Oooooh I wanna make a portal!

This link was posted on another forum I am on. You guys that are using this should know about it, so I figured I would post it here.

not that any of that really makes sense to me, its a good thing it was fixed.
hopefully people that use it will upgrade soon.
Where can I download the php 4 compatable edition. I just downloaded the file, and it has all .php3 extentions.
If this gets ported into vb that would rule!
<a href="http://www.bomb.net" target="_blank">http://www.bomb.net</a>
This is my gaming portal, i run php-nuke 3.0, and its fast and nice. but unfortunatly i have to run UBB, at least until i can get something else. It would probably be easy to intergrate the two a lil closer, although the table structure for users is very diffrent. One suggestion is to find the insertv statement for new users in user.php3 and insert another sql insert statement to also have the same info inserted to vB's user db. Just a thought. Stay tuned to bomb.net as we are redoing php-nuke (PHPBomb) and it will feature a PHP board and everything built in.

This was fixed.
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/phpnuke
If yes, why can't you make phpnuke use the same members file as VBB?
I believe this is possible, so every board member would have access to the portal and vice-versa!
Anyone willing to give it a try?
PS. These yellow smilies don't look good! :(
Yes, you could BUT the table structure for users in vB is completely diffrent than that of PHP-Nuke, Im sure its able to be done but it would be a bit difficult.
I see, so would it be possible to automaticly add a new members from phpnuke to vbb, using its tables, I mean for instance when you sign up for either the board or phpnuke it would register you on the other!
Maybe it' easier this way, I can't do either one :) but I'd love to see this done!
I assume this would require changes on both scripts
There have been many threads requesting vB's user data be joined with this or that product. I am not offering to do it (ey143 will be after me if I release another hack before his!), but in general, any time you want to link to different tables so that the data is live, you just have to add a routine to send new data back and forth from one to the other and call it any time an update is performed.
For example, to make the vB user database the default for vB and PHPNuke, redirect PHPNuke's user sign up to vB's routine and include some code to update PHPNuke's database after the user is registered in vB's. Do this for editing the Profile, as well. You can leave all the other user stuff alone so long as changes are always initiated in the vB user table and propagated to PHPNuke's user table. The routine just has to map the fields and add defaults for or calculate stuff that vB leaves out (and you do not want to add to vB's table -- hack away!).
Nice phumphries
Anyone wiling to give it a try?
I would if I knew PHP :(

phumphries
do you care to give this a try?
Btw would it work on the same database VBB and PHPnuke? Or it would mess up VBB?
Btw these smilies to suck!
I am almost finished the first go at ey143's hack (I need it, too), and will look at PHPNuke when I install it (the next thing on my list!).
I am a big fan of common user info. One big supplier whose name shall remain unmentioned has had two separate, system assigned user name and password combinations for three years (they are different and cannot be changed), and their login screen has said, that whole time, "We are working on having one login..." Give me a break!

So what's this hack about?
I'll install phpnuke meanwhile!
I would like to know if it would be better for me to install it in the same database as VBB, so I can in the future add your hack?
Thanks again, and I won't presure you to write the hack :)
DO it whenever you can, you didn't need to do this at all, so again I thank you!
The hack that I am doing for ey143 (I really shouldn't say that -- he had the idea, but I am doing it for me :)) adds categories to posts so that users can mark information. It will all be clear in an hour or so, I hope! We should release it next week once he has had a chance to test it.
As for where to install PHPNuke, I have not looked at the database for it, yet, but I would suspect that it would be cleaner to install it in its own database and have vB look up information from it rather than plugging more tables into vB's forum database. However, I have not installed it, yet, so that I cannot say with any firsthand knowledge of the actual workings.

Hmmmm, don't get it, but I can't wait to see it! :)
I heard about PHP-Nuke before and it looked really neat, so I was interested to hear about the security bug in v 2.5 mentioned earlier. Funny, when I checked that link, I read that v 3.0 also has a security bug:
http://virtue.wox.org/~virtue/article.php3?sid=30&mode=threaded&order=0
PHP-Nuke seems to be a promising product but it's a shame that it's not handled professionally (i.e. not a lot of info on the website, those security bugs, administration of project on sourceforge.net not handled very well, people behind it seem to know little English).
I might give it a try anyway, but if it cost $200 and it was as professionally handled as vBulletin (or even integrated), I would be ecstatic and buy it straightaway (hint, hint) - like I bought vBulletin.
P.S. Does vBulletin also have any security bugs?
I know! I think it is a great piece of software for free
BUT my hypothetical point is, if it was not free (but less than $200) AND if it had no security bugs, etc. - I would be more inclined to use it.
Of course if PHP-Nuke had no security bugs, etc. (see list above) AND it was free I would use it straightaway.
At the moment PHP-Nuke DOES have security bugs, etc. AND it is free - I might give it a try.
Also see: http://virtue.wox.org/~virtue/article.php3?sid=29&mode=threaded&order=0
This is all based on exterior judgement, I have not yet used PHP-Nuke.
yes it's still buggy, I set up last night on a test server, and I got a mysql error, then I fixed the eror, and the polls wouldn't work, I'll try phpweblog, and or phpslash now, do you guys recommend a slash dot php type?

I can!
But sometimes is offline, the server is not very good!

I am currently having someone integrate the two of these (PHP Nuke and Vbulletin) into one system. Actually - I have an auction piece that they are integrating too. This will allow users to create only one account and have centralized management of all their information. The code is still a little bit buggy, but I will be happy to share the finished product with you guys in a few days.
The people that are working on it for me have had a few problems getting vBulletin to work with PHPNuke but I think that it has actually turned out quite well now that most of the problems are ironed out.
More to come...
Stephanie
Hello Stephanie,
What auction system?

Stephanie-
This sounds great, thanks!
The auction system that I'm using is called Premier Auction.
http://www.index2000.ro/ourscripts/auction.html
I would have used an open source auction - such as -
http://www.friedmanconsulting.com/auction/ or http://www.phpauction.org/ but they are still in development and I didn't want to wait... Impatience has a price...
The cool thing is that when I purchased the auction piece, I found the guys that are doing the development on the PHPNuke and Vbulletin bit.
Any info about this?
How's it going? When'll it be done?
While I'm very interested in this hack. I also see a lot of issues regarding how it should be done.
Can you explain how you're implementing this?

These folks are working out a hack to vbulletin using PHP Nuke - it looks pretty sweet, but it's not quite there yet...
I think that they need some help from developers if anyone is interested in helping out...

Outstanding work Brad! I just discovered PHP-Nuke which is now being implemented on my site. I was debating even going with Nuke because of having my community register twice to the site (vBulletin and Nuke). I wish you luck with this. Your hard work is appreciated for those of us not savvy enough to do things for ourselves. :)

I actually have a quick question, If I implemented PHPNuke into my site now, or at least get it ready for rollout....will I have to start over when you are done with the intergration?

vbPortal only uses parts of Nuke to make it compatible with the addons. So the answer is yes you would have to start over.

Hmmm...
Ok. I've just started using Nuke on my site and haven't brought over my community to the new site layout just yet. Can I use the theme system that I created for Nuke once you finish vPortal?
Any time estimate on its release? Your work on this is very appreciated.

vbPortal 3 use's vBulletin styles which are much easier to use. So the answer is no, but!!! You can easily carry the theme over since I have put the "theme" box's into vB templates.
It's not possible ?
If yes do you have source of the script plz...

??? vbPortal uses vBulletin, I think there is a phpbb import script into vBulletin. Do a search on this board if that's what you mean. But if you really meant that you want to import vb data into phpbb, the answer is no, and why would you? If your looking for a Nuke answer I'm am re-working my Nuke2vB hack for PHP-Nuke to work with vBulletin 2.X You can follow it's progress here (http://nuke2vb.phpportals.com)

There is also
PostNuke - http://www.postnuke.com
and
MyPHPNuke - http://www.myphpnuke.com
I'm thinking about using some kind of Nuke for a site I'm working on - but I can't decide... there are good features in a lot of different nuke varieties...
PostNuke and MyPHPNuke have less security risks and bugs than PHPNuke though...
dunno...

The phpbb is still in testing stage ...so there are not much user, just me and another guy....So its basically is not that important.
The more important data is the vB membership that I had over now....I had around 1060++ members and I need to intergrate so that the members can post news....and only registered members can download files from the site...
Thats all I need .......................:D
and thank you for your hardwork on vbportal.............

I dont care about using the PHP nuke users in vBulletin, my problem is, that I cant create new databases, cause my host doesnt allow me to do so, i must use the same as "nuke".... But surely i'll have troubles to run the script with that database, with the user tables or something...
any suggestions???
