Until I am sure that it is okay to publish this mod, I am removing it. I'm sorry one and all and if the vbulletin.org team decides that it is okay I will republish as soon as I hear.

Thanks...

Will this import thanks from 3.x?

Thanks for the update!

Phaedrus

Yes, this will upgrade from Abe1's 3.x versions. Do not uninstall the 3.x version, just upgrade and you shouldn't lose any Thank Yous.

Thanks for this :) Would be nice to have the Thanks button a bigger thank you button somewhere more noticeable. Most of my members don't notice it... :(

I used the Groans hack which was marked as "re-usable code" and worked it backwards from that one after cleaning up the code I changed it to thank rather than groan. I found that when I changed groan to thank in that one that the dbase tables were the same as my old hack and was able to upgrade from there, and I had to remove a search function that caused database issues.

I did rewrite the phrases to match my old hack as my users rebelled when I changed the phrases they were used to. I suspect that the code is close, probably very close, to the Thanks hack however I have not done a stare and compare, since the idea was originally Abe1's I do not take credit for the idea. I also do not take credit for the code. I simply wanted a way for people to get updates.

If this isn't copascetic I would not object to having the hack removed, just PM me if that happens so I don't start looking for a missing hack. I did ask in that old thread if this would be kosher to do, as I was unsure since it works and acts like the old hack (the one I used in 3.6) and can upgrade that old hack (using the same dbase tables).

As I said. If this isn't copascetic, then please remove the hack.

Thanks for your reply.
One more question before I try your update.
I'm currently running abe1's latest version on vb 4.1.2.

The correct steps to update would be:

-disable the hack (at manage products)
-upload and overwrite files
-Import product-post_thanks.xml into PRODUCTS. Allow Overwrite "YES".
-re-enable hack again.
All thanks are remained then, right?

Thanks again.

Correct. Make sure to change your settings in Admin CP for the hack.

The hack that I created this from had old search string code which caused database errors rather than results so I disabled it until I learn how to call the right information from the new database tables.

Paul, will you please post here what vb.org's decision is on this mod?
I am using the current one from Abe1, but as you are aware, he hasn't been on the site since June 2010.
I'd like to use a new version, but not if it's going to be removed.

Phaedrus
04-12-2011, 04:44 PM
You probably didn't put the buttons into the style images "buttons" folder. Each style has an images folder, you will need to add the button images to the folder for each style.

Which folder did you add it to? I believe you are adding it to only one folder rather than to the folder specific to the style you are viewing it in.

Is there a way to remove these until I have a definitive answer? I'm not a pro, I released one hack a long time ago for 3.x versions and now did these. I could remove them until I know... But I don't see a way to do that when I hit the "edit" option...

Well I'm looking at all of Abe's Post/Groan mods and see none marked as re-usable code... not doubting you just doing my "job" per say. Can you post info or PM Paul or myself something to correspond w/ the "re-usable code" as you previously stated so we can verify?

Same thing for the Groan version as well: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=261869

Thanks!

It was the groan version posted by Mohammad6006 that had the re-usable code clicked. I didn't want to mess with ones that didn't have that.

I would hope that vBulletin.org would recognize that these add-ons have effectively been abandoned. What Phaedrus has done is undertake the task of trying to keep the add-ons updated for vBulletin 4.x and to provide support that the poriginal authors are unable or unwilling to provide.

Yes. I'm grateful that Phaedrus makes the effort to keep these hacks updated.

I hope the vbulletin.org staff does support this and does not force him to quit due to pseudo copyrights. A short e-mail to the author should clarify anything...if he won't reply...no complaint, no redress..

Suggestion for further updates/ info:

I have got that info from the original thread and they are useful for me:

1.
in template post_thanks_postbit_info
looking for {vb:stylevar right} and replace with {vb:stylevar left}, all occurrences.
This resolves my alignment issue.

2.
post_thanks_box entire new code (fixes inline mod issue):
<li class="postbit<vb:if condition="$vboptions['legacypostbit']">legacy</vb:if>" id="post_thanks_box_{vb:raw post.postid}"<vb:if condition="!$post_thanks_box == 1"> style="display:none"</vb:if>>
{vb:raw post_thanks_box}
</li>

3. Give reputation points for each thanks received.
This will create a link at the users setting page, users are now able to find the post for which they have got thanks. Set the entries to 20 at acp (User reputation options). Controls how many ratings to display in the user's control panel.

This is a temporary solution until the search option will be reintegrated.
Thanks to the original authors for the ideas which are very useful and I am using atm.

Does the stylevar imgdir_button point to the path where you have uploaded post_thanks.png and post_thanks-hover.png? (Default: images/buttons)
Are you using a non reverted (modified) postbit template?

Well, seriously, I don't see why there would be an objection. Abe1 hasn't been here in a year and he's therefore provided no support for the mod and shown no interest in further development. And this is a "freeware" community, after all. If he wanted to continue to support it or develop it, I assume he would have done so and if he isn't interested why on earth would he object to someone else taking on the job?

Vaira
04-14-2011, 12:31 PM
Pffft!

While waiting for a decision dragon byte is making money with their importer which is no freeware.....I bet abe1's opinion on this wasn't caught up.

I don't get the point. Vbulletin.org supports dragon byte's alternative which imports abe1's thanks database and you have to pay for.
"Import Thanks:import script to import "thanks" from Abe's [AJAX] Post Thank You Hack on vBulletin.org. It will work with both vB3 and vB4 versions of this mod."

This feature is fully supported / tolerated by vbulletin.org, so why should it be a problem with Phaedrus's support of the original hack?

It's still the author's copyrighted code no matter how you look at it.

1. I changed that template, but not exactly that way. I was integrating with the Groans hack and this caused issues I had to write it so that they wouldn't overlap and step on each other in the postbit. It also clashed with the blogs if you have those turned on.

2. If there is ever some way to get permission I'll look into this.

3. That is already an option of the mod.

I may attack this from a different direction and simply rewrite the mod using a different approach giving the same usability, but without the problem of copyrighted code. However in order to maintain the database entries I would need to use those same tables. Is that copacetic or is that enough to make it clash with vbulletin.org rules?

I guess I could try to figure out how to make it translate Abe1's tables into new tables... Anybody a Mysql expert around here?

I don't think it's necessary to change the table names.

I don't think it's necessary to change the table names.

I sent a PM to Paul to find out, if it isn't I should be able to do this in a reasonable amount of time. If it is, I should still be able to, but I'll need to figure out how to do the table changes and that may add time, depending on how difficult it is to find out the right commands to do it. All of it is doable.

Just want to give support to Phaedrus. I understand where the problem is, but I think that Abe1 should made his code reusable. He even stopped to offer installation for $50 of his mod, he retired from his forum and he maybe even don't use his email address anymore.

This is regretful, as his two mods (Post Thanks and Groan) where very popular in community.

That's cool. I'll take a different approach and write something that will do this, my question about the tables, thanks for the answer.

I'll have to rewrite code, but I should be able to get this done and repost a new version that will have the same function without using Abe1's code. Since I can use the same tables as a starting point it should be upgradable from Abe1's mods even though it will be new code...

It should be no problem to use abe1's tables (database), since the importer of Dragon Byte accesses them as well. (I mean in the aspect of copyrights).

And to point 3:
Yes I know it is an option already, I just suggested to use it to find the thanks via reputation links.;)

Alan_SP
04-15-2011, 03:16 PM
No, just that you wouldn't get new versions of this mod. But, when Phaedrus makes his version, you can install this new version and have all your thanks imported.

There is only one problem. If you uninstall this version, you loose thanks of your users, as they get removed from database. Even if you Phaedrus makes new code using same tables, uninstalling would mean removing that tables. So we should always keep Abe1's product installed.

Or can new product replace Abe1's? So we wouldn't see Abe1's as disabled?

No, and I'll answer questions until I come up with an updated version that doesn't violate copyright rules of vbulletin.org.
