how can i make my search link do like the searchbox in the below picture?

My search box looks like that (well has those options) by default in vBulletin 3.8. What does yours look like?

mine is just a link that says 'Search'
when clicked it goes to advanced search.

Do you have any dropdowns on your site at all? check AdminCP > Settings > Options > style & language settings > Use 'vBMenu' DHTML Popup Menus? Is that set to Yes?

Also if you have JavaScript disabled you won't see the pop-up menu.

other dropdowns on the site work just fine, like inside of threads when i click 'thread tools' and things like that.

Could be a problem with your style then.

In Admin CP go to Style Manager and Add a New Style with no parent style.

See if it works in that, if so compare your navbar templates between the two styles to see what is different/missing.
