Invite only forum?

Is it possible to make a child forum that you can only be invited to? Not password protected, but one where you have to be in a group approved by an admin to be allowed access.

Yes, simply create a new user group then only give that user group access to that particular section. Now only people who have been added to that new group can see that section.

How does a person do this? I made a group, how do I make that forum accessable to that group only?

just change the permitions

at forums, then forum permitions
