where it says: New posts, Private Messages, FAQ Calendar, Community, Forum Actions, Quick Links?

It will be useless in my new forum.

So you need to modify the navbar template to remove it.

would I find navtab under stylevars?

.navtabs is the class. You can look in the css templates to find it and then it would tell you the stylevar used for the background. Or, just look at the stylevars > look at the Navbar stylevars and there are only a couple that relate to the background. I'm sure you can figure out which one it is.
