I've seen this on many forums before, but could never figure out how to do this or how to search for this correctly.
I want to change my new thread/ old thread icons on forum home per each individual forum.
For example: If a forum is about PS3 then it shows a ps3 icon and the xbox one shows an xbox etc.
Anyone know what mod allows to change these individually, because I've never seen the option in any of the forum permissions.

Are you talking about the Forum Status Icons that you may change in the Forum Manager > Prefix for Forum Status Images?
Prefix for Forum Status Images Forum Status images are usually shown alongside the forum in a forum listings to indicate the read status.
This prefix must only contain alphanumerical characters, though the following are also allowed - _ / ., a folder name is also acceptable to be placed within the status icon directory.
The following images are currently in use for status icons, you will need to create images with the specified prefix to match.

Ok I found an example again finally ....
How do you put the images next to the forum board ... notice how they are all different based on what type of forum it is.

I know thats 4.x but Ive seen this done on 3.8x etc. I would be doing this on 3.8.x

Go to where I mentioned above - Forum Manager > Prefix for Forum Status Images - click the help link and it will tell you the names of the files (I listed the 4.x ones above not realizing I was in the 3.x forum) and follow the directions to change it per forum. Just make all five images per forum exactly the same.

I'm not seeing "Prefix for Forum Status Images" under my Forum Manager tab.
I see a Thread Prefixes at the bottom of the "Forum and Moderators" section.

It should be there... You have to edit each forum. 3.8 screenshot attached...

*face palm* Your right ... it's there ...
so thats where you enter your file name for the image ... how do you choose between it showing two, like one "greyed" out and then the image to differentiate whether there is a new post in the forum.

There are several icons...
example_new.gif
example_old.gif
example_new_lock.gif
example_old_lock.gif
This would be if you set the prefix to: exaple_
new.gif is how it looks if there is new posts to be read
old.gid is how it looks if there are no new posts
new_lock.gif is if the forum is locked and there are new posts
old_lock.gif is if the forum is locked and there are no new posts
You can set custom for each version... Some forums just use the same picture for all, or some use the same for new and old without caring about being locked... but in any case you need each version.

ah so like with yours it said movie_
so you could do another like game_ on a different forum. Then you just upload the pics for
movie_new.gif
movie_old.gif
and so on .....
and then
game_old.gif
game_new.gif
and so on ... and it knows to pull those pics for that particular forum board because of the prefix you set. ???

Thanks Lynne and Bird you two have been very helpful ... I only know so much, but I'm constantly reading and learning!
Can someone help me doing this step by step when i try to do it either one images comes on all sub forums or the whole forum doesn't show images at all in old/new icons :(

Step 1. Make 4 icons per forum. call them:
CUSTOM_forum_new.gif
CUSTOM_forum_old.gif
CUSTOM_forum_new_lock.gif
CUSTOM_forum_old_lock.gif
(new is the version when there are new posts and the forum is open, old is when there are no new posts and the forum is open. new_lock is when there are new posts but the user can't post in that forum (it's locked.) old_lock is when there are no new posts and it's locked.
Step 2. Upload Files
Upload all images to your images/statusicon directory via FTP.
Step 3. Go to Admin CP -> Forum Manager
Edit the forum you want to make the custom icons for, find the box Prefix for Forum Status Images and put: CUSTOM_ in the box.
Now save and you should see the forum icons when you view the forum index.
Change "CUSTOM_" in the file names and the box in step 3 to whatever you want, usually a word that describes the forum you are making the icons for.
I tried to follow the steps by doing as follows...
Made 4 new icons per forum as mentioned above
uploaded them in images/statusicon directory
and then went to specific forum and in "prefix forum images" put the Custom_ and saved it but when i visit the forum it looks like this ... as its shown in the attached image. Any help will b appreciated.
Thanks

Right click on the broken image and depending on your browser either go to "properties" or "copy image address" and paste in the URL of the image here.
It's possible the style has it's own statusicon directory you will have to account for.
When i click on the image instead of showin it as
images/statusicons/Custom_forum_new/old.gif
it shows as
images/statusicons/Custom_forum_new/old-48.png
I even tried deleteing those icons which r currently in there with new/old-48.png but it still doesn't show the image.

Do you have vBulletin 3.x or 4.x?

@K!ng
You need to rename the image to:
custom_forum_*.gif
(Replace the * with new,old,locked)
You can change the extension of the .png image to .gif without any problem (if you want the same quality)
Anyhow, I wouldn't recommend you doing this, it will just increase the page load time.
BirdOPrey5 : i'm using 4.1.3 suite
Frosty : I did it the same way but still facing the same problem :(

Can we get an image of what you did in the Forum Manager and then a link to the forum.php page so we can check the image source code.

K!ng - The instructions I was giving you are for vBulletin 3.x since this was marked as a vBulletin 3 request originally. It would seem the instructions for VB4 are different, that's why it's not working.

The filenames for VB4 appear to be:
CUSTOM_forum_old-48.png
CUSTOM_forum_new-48.png
CUSTOM_forum_new_lock-48.png
CUSTOM_forum_old_lock-48.png
Otherwise follow the same instructions.
