If it was showing the other way, then you were probably using htaccess to do it or something like that. You can put it back to the old way in vboptoins > friendly urls > standard urls

I would like to know if there is a way i can have shortened url's sort of like how facebook does it facebook.com/username or group name

I would love to do that with my site using the forum.
