View Full Version : Miscellaneous Hacks - What's New - Reloaded
Andreas
10-24-2010, 10:00 PM
This Add-on changes the behaviour of the What's New tab to include new content from all available configured content types (Blogs Entries, Articles, Social Group Messages, etc.) instead of only new forum posts.
As an added bonus, it also does also show an indicator for content that was not updated since your last visit but is still unread.
Attention
This Add-on is kinda resource intensive, you might not want to use it on a large/busy forum!

Tagged! I was looking for this for a long time.
A good option would be the same functions but for today's posts instead of new posts.

Hi Andreas,
thanks for this mod, it's a big deal. But it seems the "New Content" link doesn't work correctly (using vB 4.0.6). I'm sure, I have a new thread in my board, but this search link shows the standard vB error message.
A problem which I have solved is that I have no What's New button. But I have installed the my_threads & my_posts mod, so I put the search link of the What's New button into this menu:
123092
It's the first item in the menu. To do this, find in the "myposts_navbar_link"-template (make sure you have the "My Threads & My Posts" installed):
<ul class="popupbody popuphover">
Add under it:
<li><a href="search.php?do=getnew&contenttype=All_Content">Neue Inhalte</a></li>
Change the phrase "Neue Inhalte" to whatever you like.
Again, thanks a lot.
Best regards
L.R.

Mod is working fine in 4.0.8 , but also confirm "new content" link does not work after this. Give you the standard message:
vBulletin Message:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
If you click this small link. Most users seem to click the larger tab (What's New), so this isn't really to much of a problem (right now).

That link shouldn't be there at all, it originates from the very first version of this Add-on when there was no What's New tab.
Will be removed in next release.

"As an added bonus, it also does also show an indicator for content that was not updated since your last visit but is still unread."
-Over 50 of us in the vbtracker have been waiting for this to be restored to "new post" search. Is it possible to use this alone, just new posts or would it still be resource intensive?
-edit -ok I tested this, not quite what I need. I need new posts search to contain the "not updated since last visit line". Please PM me and let me know how much $$ for such a custom mod (if you are open to developing it). Thanks!

Sorry ... edit: What about comments to blog- and article-entries? They are not included, right?
Andreas
10-26-2010, 04:06 PM
Can you please expand on this?
It requires the cumlulated amout of queriesfor all included content types + 1 whereas a search for new forum posts only takes the amount of queries required to search for new forum posts.
What about comments to blog- and article-entries? They are not included, right?
vBulletin currently does not have newitem search controllers for these content types, therefore they are not included.
This Add-on does only use already existing controllers.

Whenever I activate this plugin, it replaces the list of unread threads on the Whats New? page with:
Sorry, there is no new content to view.
You may search for content posted during the previous 24 hours, here
When I click on the "here" link, I get:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
When I disable the plugin, the original Whats New topic list returns.
Is there any way this mod can be activated without 'losing' a member's existing list of unread topics?

That would most likely be a bug in vBulletin itself.
Does it happen if you are just searching new events?

I congratulate the coder for this product, it is an awesome idea.
For me this product would be awesome if it had the option to show new posts first and in the bottom the post updated in the last 24h.
Or if it showed blog posts when you clicked the "posted today" link "/search.php?do=getdaily"

Great mod have it installed. Just one small thing when it shows a members birthday it will just show the members name at the top of the list. It could be a bit confusing as it does not indicate what that members name is listed for, maybe a heading "Today's Birthdays" or something

This is a great mod that is for sure. What would also be nice would be the following.
1. From the What's New menu an easy way for users to tag what they want to show in the search. I know this is available in your profile settings but most members just don't seem to see it.
2. Add new images uploaded to the photo albums

You might want to reword this
What is wrong with it? It has been like that forever.
"Unread portions" specifically, it's not really relevant how long it's been there. Unread portions of what? Do forums have portion sections? :D it's just not your typical descriptive word for a forum. I edited the phrase to read posts, I would have put content but I didn't want to use the same word twice in the once sentence. :)
What about unread bits :D
Boofo
05-13-2011, 10:32 PM
I pretty well leave it as is since it is that way on vb 3 already so everyone has gotten used to it by now. No sense in rocking the boat. ;)
Just noticed that this seems to cause an issue when you have tapatalk enabled on your forum. Any search results return via the app only show everything above the line "the posts below......" I wonder why this happens?
Also even if you mark all forums read and then click what's new it still shows the notification in the search results.

Does this also show new profile images / album comments?
Suggestion for you.
Allow admin option to disable the usercp options for registered users.
Today when in my own userCP I accidently clicked one of the options today think it was blogs and then saved the userCP page. Now I didn't realise that I had clicked the option but when I clicked the Whats New button nothing came up.
Being incredibly intelligent I obviously figured out what was wrong within 10 seconds but others might not.
Anyway. :)

Hi Andreas. Thanks for this mod. I was looking for a way to easily show new blog post and reactions. And as a bonus I even get more :)
Only one small thing.
This shows up on every search: "The content below has not been updated since your last visit but still contains unread portions." even when there is no content that shows below.
And when I hit "the last 24 hours" link, it shows twice.
Could you be so kind and see if there is a way to correct this?
Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to turn off the "bonus" indicator? vBulletin shows the unread but not new posts already.
Thanks.

Friendly bump to bring awareness to such a great mod! - i really don't understand why this isnt built into vbulletin..
Thank you for creating it!

Having a random problem, i think.,
If a user updates his settings, for something else they seem to loose the default content types configured in Content Types for New Content Search, they then have to manually set it and save again before it works.
between updating something else and updating Content Types for New Content Search, they get the message "sorry there is no new content to view".
Its happened to a handful of people now, something that can be fixed?

Think i've figured out a work around.
I reimported, then disabled the following plugins.
Modify Selection
Save Selection
Then updated settings in admincp, (also usercp for completeness) and tried what's new and it picked up all new content.
Hope this works for those who had problems with the "sorry there is no new content to view" issue.

Does this mod still work? I've just installed it on 4.2.0 and searches work but What's New isn't finding new blog or social group posts, just the odd old social group post which has me confused.

Same as above. I'm looking for a way to simply include blog posts into my "new posts" search. Will this work for that? Or can someone give me an another simple fix?
