Adding a sidebar?

How can you add a side bar, or side blocks to FORUMHOME (Or a FORUMHOME copy page) so I can add some links and info to it?

I would like to do this, if possible, without using a mod, but my html skills can't accomplish that and be W3C/XHTML/etc compliant.

Is there an easy to do it?

I see sites all the time with sidebars, someone can't share how to add one? I'd like some place to put links on my homepage

I would imagine most those sites, if not all, use a mod. It's not easy to do on your own.
