AWCoding- Mentor
Version 1.0.0
Release Date: 16th September 2010
Software Provided and coded by AWCoding (http://www.forumcoding.com)

What Software Is:
It auto assigns a mentor unless they entered a correct referrer at registration then that person becomes there mentor. The software has an on and off feature for PMing the mentor about his new mentee as well as auto adding the two (mentor and mentee) as friends. You can select what usergroups are able to mentor and from these groups it selects a random person per new user registered to mentor. The software is used more or less as a help and go to person for new users to go to for help and questions. Makes things more personable and a point of contact for users. This will reduce heavy traffic to the owner/admins and spread help through the other groups (moderators and supermods). You can even create your own Mentor group and select from that group. You can also edit the mentor of a user by editing the user in adminCP. There is an option to show the mentee in userCP who there mentor is and a link to their profile.

I like the idea behind this. I'll have to see if my members would be interested in it.

One thing that I can think of is some sort of metrics and an expiration date for the mentor.

So... metrics on maybe how many posts the newbie and the mentor have both posted in (assumes they are conversing with each other), how many PM's they've each sent to/from one another (but not the content). Last time each was online, etc.

Kind of a dashboard if you will so me as an admin can see whether or not the system isn't working for us, specific members aren't doing the mentor job, etc.

There should also be a button in the members settings that allows them to say "I no longer need a mentor" or a way for the mentor to cut that cord. It should also do this after X days or something as well (optional).

I could also see this being more useful (to me anyway) if I could pull mentor out of a specific group for someone. I know you said you can do this, but I was thinking more along the lines of multiple groups. For instance:

Someone signs up on the forums (I have no need to assign a mentor at that time personally). However, when someone is assigned a specific usergroup, THEN I would want to assign them a mentor, from a specific usergroup pool.

I run a gaming guild, we have several hundred active members. We play many games. So when someone was added to the secondary group X, then I would want to assign them a mentor from secondary group Y. Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, what you have sounds really cool, what I described above works best for "me" so I understand if it's not going to happen. But I'd love such a system!

Ohh, something else.

Custom PM's for when someone is setup for them as a mentor. Meaning, if they join secondary group X, then they should get a PM designed specifically for that group.

I like all your ideas and will add them to pool to get done in next version. Keep the ideas coming guys. You ask you shall receive.

Not sure where ive gone wrong but the mentor shows up in the profile options in the admin cp and you can enter the user id of the mentor you wish to have for the user!
But no other signs of it on profile pages and no pm sent to the mentor or user when signing up about it!
Any help would be great thanks in advance!

Have you activated the PM on new registration? They only are sent when an account is activated/moderated.

I'm about to go through installing this mod... one feature I'd like is language based mentorship... I've got a large mixed community, predominantly German and English, and German only speaking users might not be able to communicate well with English only speakers... :)

AWJunkies
09-19-2010, 03:57 PM
So you want a quick setting for language match. Do they select language at registration? As that would be only way to do it.

Good point. I am in the same position.

Members can choose between English, Dutch or German vb language settings. See vbulletins language manager. I'll probably add other languages in time.

No, they don't. That's the problem. I thought they did initially, but just running through the process, the language has to be changed via their control panel (despite vb at times suggesting that it's set otherwise, for example, welcome PM), and that is done after registration, but is English by default. In other words, if a user doesn't change their language by the time they are approved (as my forum is moderated), they would be listed as "English" speaking.

However... that wouldn't be the case, if they registered via a German version of the registration page...

So... the long and short of it is this. If they've chosen a language for the site before registration, it would work. If not, they may change language. If they did that then, could it be that the system adjusts their Mentor automatically, perhaps sending them a message to that effect? I suppose changing automatically would have problems especially if a user switches languages frequently.

This would mean seperate groups for the Mentor languages, as some of my German speaking users don't have the site set in German...

Yeah gets kinda tricky I will think on it for best way to go about it. Really should be option at reg for language.

Really should be option at reg for language.

I completely agree. Sometimes vb seems to have not got internationalization and localization fully implemented, as if it's an off the fly addition.

Alfa1

I do have a mandatory profile field where new users need to select their country from a drop down. This would allow members from specified countries to be assigned to certain language groups. Though that gets complicated with multilingual countries like Switzerland and Belgium.

mokonzi
09-19-2010, 08:11 PM
I've similar with an extra file for users to list the languages they speak. But incorporating such fields would be different for every install, and I can't imagine a viable way of creating a viable system using the profile fields. (Not unless there was a mod that forced the board language based on the profile field).

I'm getting this error when trying to approve moderated new user registrations:

Fatal error: Using $this when not in object context in /my/site/public_html/admincp/user.php(1904) : eval()'d code on line 5

I've disabled the Mentor mod and the error goes... :)

It happens whether the Mentor mod is turned on or off on the Settings page.

I would like an option where new users can opt-out of being assigned a mentor. Some of our members may like the option, others may see it as unnecessary. Keep up the great work!

I have a usergroup set up for mentors. The system will only choose a member if they are a "Primary User" in said usergroup. How can I get the system to choose one even if they are only a "Additional User"?

I paid you to create this mod for me. I cannot believe I am here two years later and you have released this? I paid for this, and wanted to keep it private? Why is out here so anyone can download it? If you guys do not believe me you can read the following thread where I very first introduced this modification. Does the description not sound exactly the same? Notice the date? End of 2009?

you really need to read the posts on awjunkies forum

1) what was the agreement of this mod you purchased for creation ?
paying for someone to create a mod does not stop them releasing it after all its
the source code is not protected, if you requested this developer to create it, where is the agreement shown on a post ?

ok yeah its a 3 year old post from another website but if you wanted a paid mod developed just for you then you should of requested it in vbulletin.org on Paid mods requests section

I had bought mods off of him in the past. I had contacted him through his website and we discussed it through AIM. I am sure I no longer have the conversations, but it was not supposed to be released to anyone else because there were many competitors at the time looking for a similar mod. I no longer own that website anymore. But it still makes me mad that it was released anyways.

Take note to this section of the Terms of Service :

Well, he can make that anything he wants too. lol. Those rights are for people using his code. This code was made "for me." I requested and had him implement EVERY single one of those features, all the way down to the being the mentor if you were the one who referred someone.

Of course I have also tried to contact him since I saw this. I messaged him and I left him a PM on his forum. I have still yet to hear back. :[

I am just now noticing because I was out of the vb scene for a while. I came back on here to check in on a mod or two for someone I am helping out and I just so happen to see this.

CAG CheechDogg
11-02-2012, 12:02 AM
Regardless of what you asked him to and requested him to implement, it is his code not yours. He has every right to re-use it or make it public.

OsideRida06
11-02-2012, 02:33 AM
I made it very clear that it was not to be released. I had many competitors at the time. Trust me, that was something that I made sure of. If I PAY him big money to create a custom code for ME, it is no longer his code. When I buy that code, it is now mine. Why would I commission a PUBLIC code for everyone? If that were the case I would have posted here and saw who wanted to go in on the mod with me. But I wanted it to be private, period.
