How to change statusicon

running 4.0.6 and online and offline icons are using the following statusicon;
statusicon/user-offline.png and statusicon/user-online.png

how do I change the forum to use
statusicon/user-offline.gif and statusicon/user-online.gif

(I cannot convert the gif to png because the gif are animiated)
