How do I get Instant Email notification to send only one email?

On my forums, instant email notification sends me an email for EVERY reply to a thread, even if I have not visited the thread. So if I subscribe to a thread with instant notification, head to sleep, and three people have replied, I'll have three individual emails for each post. Quite spammy.

On vbulletin.org it seems to work fine, I subscribe to any thread, only get one email, and then later

I want to turn on Instant Email notification for all new users, but I don't want to spam em'. Any thoughts? Or should I open a ticket on vbulletin.com?

I just converted my board from phpBB and my users are also used to have just one email for new replies and complain about the repeated emails.
