View Full Version : Administrative and Maintenance Tools - (Extra Spam Protection) Prevent Posting Of Links On User Group Per User Group Basis

This is another mod I coded for my own forum and thought to submit it here in the hope tha other users might find an use for it as well. Lately my forum has been hits with a lot of spam posts. It seems like they bypass every single prevention at the registration which leads me to believe that those who register are human spammers and once they pass through all the anti spam restrictions at the registration, the spam bots take over to post at the forums.

Anyway, this hack will allow you to make posting of links allowed/disallowed on a usergroup per usergroup basis.

Installation: upload the includes folder to your forum root folder and then import the link_gids.xml file inside the mod package to Plugins&Products in the Acp of your forum.

After you install it, go to your Acp->Usergroups->Usergroup Manager->{ Chose the group that you want to prevent from posting links->Click Edit Usergroup} and under Post / Thread Permissions, you will see a new setting that says: Prevent From Posting Links, set that to yes.

For more information, please have a look at the attached screenshot below.

Thanks for your comment. Since I coded this, I have to say that I didn''t have a single spam link.

This mod looks perfect as a replacement for the Check4SPAM mod - thank you.

How does this mod identify links? Does it do a search on the text string, looking for "www." ".com", ".net" etc. or does it just prevent the user from using the Insert Link button?

Why not use Valter's Advanced Permissions hack? Doesn't this just do the same thing, stop people posting links when a criteria isn't met?

Yes, that would do the trick provided that links can be spotted when entered as plain text and not just as BBCode.

It prevents them from posting links in both ways.

Nope, mine is different which you could have noticed as well if you read the description/saw the screenshot under the first post.

Fantastic. Is the search string editable? I have a problem in that users may want to post questions about the .NET framework and this could be mistaken for a link.

I just installed this mod on a test boear and it seems to work fine. One thing though; in the AdminCP, the title of this mod is given as "Enable And Disable Flood Limit For User Groups" which is pretty confusing - could this be changed? Also, it would be useful if the title was a link back to this page.

Sorry about that. It was the title for my other mod. I had forgotten to change it.

The mod package is already updated with the right mod name. Also thank you for bringing that to my attention :)

This is a simple but excellent mod and it will help prevent lots of spam on my forum - thanks.

In return, and by way of some constructive criticism, I have a simple suggestion:

In the Usergroup Manager, it would be much clearer and more logical to have the option match the logic of all the other options in the Post/Thread Permissions group. So the option would read "Can Post Links" with the default being "Yes". I attach an image to whet your appetite. :)

OK, perhaps I'm dense. I checked out VSA's permissions hack...and compared it with this hack. It's true that they are not identical. But are the following differences accurate?

This hack limits the posting of links on a per usergroup basis.

The other hack limits posting of links (in addition to 16 other options) on a per usergroup and per forum basis.

So if we want something simple, go with this hack. If we want something more complex go with the other.

Is this a fair assessment?

I have been looking for this for a long time, tagged and will be installed when in office. I have vbstopforum spam and this will kill the ones that gets through. Thanks.

I suggest you turn off signatures for the same usergroup you run this mod on.

New users enter one usergroup with restrictions (no sigs, no links). After X posts they got promoted to a normal usergroup.

I don''t know what that other mod does as I am not familiar with it. But what you said about my mod, it is correct.

Nope. This is for posts only.

Just tried this on 4.0.6

When I enter a new post I get the following error if I enter a link from a user who can't post them:

Errors
The following errors occurred with your submission
This forum requires that you wait 30 seconds between posts. Please try again in 30 seconds.

I have made sure I wasn't posting too quickly!

If I try to edit a link into a post I get the correct error message. Anyone else had this?

can this mod be ported to 3.8.x plz

I use the "Prevent Spam" plugin, and I added [url to the list of spam words - this seems to be working to stop users from posting urls.

Instead of disallowing users from posting links based on usergroup, I think a feature to limit users (below x number of posts) from posting url would be great.

It doesn't work if the URL or http or www is left out. For instance, if someone puts "johndoe.com" it will come up. Anyway to fix this?
