3.8 to 4.0 from clean install

I'm currently running 3.8.2 with a few mods and vbadvanced. Looking at upgrading to 4.0 publishing suite from a clean install. I've never done a backup install before so I don't generally know how to do this. I do however backup regularly just in case the inevitable will happen. Assuming this can be done, what steps should I do to prepare for a clean install of 4.0 and import users and posts from my old boards? Thanks.
