View Full Version : Does anyone else think the auto-merge double post 'feature' stinks?

I appreciate what it's 'trying' to do but sometimes you add new/relevant information to an existing question and the thread doesn't get bumped to the top/marked as unread again even though the entire situation may have changed and warrants being re-read by those interested in it. If not interested then skip over it- in the end this is software about making posts- don't take the fundamental basic principal of vB away... at the very least this should be disabled in the discussions and mods sections... maybe there is use for it in an OT section, and that is only a maybe.:p

In my opinion that is a very handed and much needed option in support forums. Especially after seeing how many people don''t follow the rule of not bumping their posts/threads unless 24 hours have passed. If you have additional important info to add, you can edit your original or last post and add that info there rather bumping your thread. It is not about not being interested in reading and skipping it as you put it, but it is about following the rules :) At least that is how I see it.

I like it. I understand it isn't ideal in your particular case, but there are quite a few users who feel the need to bump their threads after just two or three hours of no reply and this stops those threads from being bumped and I am thankful that they don't show up in my list of unread threads again.

oh well... it's a sucky situation to have to administer to the lowest common denominator but if it's that big of an issue with people bumping posts I will defer to you guys.

Never had it happen to me. I guess it is not a big deal.

Agreed, Patience is after all supposedly a virtue right? :p

I like it, and has a major necessity on forums like this where people are impatient to get a response. If you don't like it, be more patient.

I "like" it but do see your point, I would still rather have a post edited then bumped.

I've always hated the feature myself. One of the reasons why I rarely post here anymore.

What about if it only merged if the post was made within 24 hours of the original one? And then after that doing the normal additional post thing.

Its set at 24 hours.

Since I doubt it affects your posting that often, that seems a somewhat lame excuse. However, thats your choice of course. :) There are no plans to change it.

@ OP, depends what you want the feature for really.

Personally I wouldn't use it on my site, I did install a plugin for it though but I quicly removed it as it wasn't doing what I wanted it to do. For some reason since upgrading to VB4 the dumplicate post warning no longer works and I'm getting plagued to death with DP's (not the sexual kind :D) I thought the plug in would stop that but it doesn't, it actually makes the site look worse.

For here, I think it's fine though. These boards are very large and you don't want to have the place overly cluttered.

This feature is absolutely essential. It should actually be made a default feature of vBulletin.

Fair enough then. I don't really see a problem with it then. 24 hours shouldn't make much difference so if you really want to update the topic and make sure your update is seen you can just wait the 24 hours. I just assumed it auto merged any and all double posts which I could see would be an annoyance.

If I had it on my own forum I'd probably use a much lower time frame like an hour or something, but for here it makes sense to be 24 hours.

I'm not debating that there are people out there who would btt a topic every 2 hours if they could, but I've yet to find a forum on here where 2 or 3 hours would knock a topic from the top half of a page, let alone off the first page totally. Can I ask if traffic has changed much since this was implemented?

Yeah, there's usually a lot of threads made between early morning (9:00AM GMT) and evening time (5:00PM GMT).

Erm no!

It's only really needed on large forums.

true.

my users actually kept asking for it (after upgrading to vB 4.0) until I finally add it.

What does your link have to do with this topic?

BirdOPrey5

When I linked it there was a "bump" post 2 hours after the initial that wasn't auto-merged. It has since been deleted. Kind of exactly what people were talking about.

That thread was originally in a modification forum, where we do not automerge.
