Okay, everything was swimmingly fine before I updated but here's what I did;
-Upgraded lighttpd, php4 to php5, and mysql to mysql5
-Enabled gzip output compression for lighty and php
Now, everything is fast except when posting via quick reply - it takes about 5 or so seconds and says "Please Wait" with a circular animation. Before it was instant. It also does this with visitor messages.
It only seems to be on Ajaxy things - quick reply, visitor messages, marking forums as read. Takes about 5 seconds every time. Also includes editing and saving posts in threads.
Tested with a test installation of vB4 - no issues at all.
