I'm setting up my own general forum, and I would like some tips on monetizing it.

Also, I plan on selling a 'premium' membership, SO, I need a method of removing advertisements for these users.

Either new template or set php array for these usergroups.

what version of vbulletin are you going to be using?
You can wrap your code with if conditions to hide from selected groups.
do you have an adsense account?

Version: 3.8.5,

I have an adsense account, but my vBulletin PHP is not so great.. could you link me to a thread where I could do that thing above? =]

and I would suggest checking out the ad_location_ templates as far as places to place your banners.
