Next week I shall be doing some work on my forum and would like to just put a simple page up to explain to people who visit my URL.

What would this page have to be called so people see this instead on my forum?

You can simply put your forum into Maintenance Mode. But if you want to display a custom page informing them then your forum is closed for work, then set up a simple html/css page then.
