I think VB Geek/Gars is dead / abandoned

what is the alternative?

It still works for the vB 3 series but it wont be ported over to vB 4. Hopefully the vB 5 CMS will be better than the vB 4 CMS then we can shift over to that.

Currently Gars is still a lot better than the vB 4 Article CMS so we're just waiting for vB 5.

you'd be better of deploying wordpress + one of the many popular and supported article mods or other solutions before waiting for vb5.

Yes 2011/12 .. I think its more likely 2011. Gars isn't really good but wordpress/ vB CMS sucks much more.

So because there is hardly any other alternative better stick with vB 3.8.X + Gars for the next 1-2 years.

I am glad to hear that others still stick to GARS, in case of troubles, it is an advantage that it still used on a large number of sites.

there are a few mods that can do what GAR's did here at the ORG, just have to search for them.

I had great hopes from the vB4 CMS/Article system. But I am very disappointed with it. Gars is so much better. I hope that the vB5 CMS will be good. Then we can shift to that.

I dont think there are any mods on vB.org that can do what GARS did except GARS lite which is a vB 3.5 addon. You might get it to work for 3.8 but it surely wont work on 4.x

GARS full version itself is a paid software.

Also if one is to go by the Geeks commets on vb.com then I dont think he will be porting this to vB 4.

You want me to give suggestions regarding the design of the CMS/new framework? To accomplish what? Point out exactly where it is clear and evident that IB would do ANYTHING apart from waste my time (in other words: totally ignore me). Sadly, that is about the only thing IB has been consistent at: Ignoring the customers. If they were to make an announcement that they were going to re-write the framework and were totally open (and transparent) about the process and seek real input from the community - I would seriously consider doing what little I could to help. However we both know monkeys would fly out my ass before that happens

Anyhoo, where would I find the time? I'm too busy prepping up for IPB 3.1 release

I would rather release for Paid but at this time Geek has no say over it and Morgan has left vB altogether so no idea what that means unless there is a post where she said anyone can take them over.

There is no post saying you cant take over. However vB5 is around the corner now. Would it make sense to be porting it over to vB4 now?

For the most part they are working with vB4, I updated Geekmart myself to vB4 so I know it works.

That is true, I'm afraid if I do that I can get in some major trouble considering they were paid mods. I would update them to work with the latest vB then once vB5 hit I would update them to work with it.

You don't need a post telling you to follow the law. You can't change and redistribute code you don't own unless explicitely allowed to do so. Whether the code is abandoned or not is insignificant.

I dont see a post telling that the law should be followed at all times :P besides the interpretation of the law can vary under different circumstances. ;)

Moreover, your dont have to use exactly the same code. Ideas are not patented, their implementation is. You can use different code to get similar results and that will surely not violate anyones right.

Of course you can make a similar prodcut from scratch, but that's clearly not what you were suggesting.

Not the least. But sometimes we can have varying opinions if a law was broken or not. Everything is not black and white all the time. That is why we have the courts to decide if laws have been broken or not. For instance Apple claims that its software has been copied by Google. Google disputes this and it is now for the courts to decide on the matter.

The only way is to contact morgan, (Calorie).
Have you tried to?
I doubt she's giving it away for free (if you think this, no offense!) although she isn't active involved in developing or selling their scripts.

Nothing, she is concentrating on her degree so I might hear from her or might not.
