So starting about a month ago or more, my website went to slow and I started getting database errors with the site crashing from time to time. My hosting person tells me that I'm having problems with too many connections being open..sql maybe he said. I'm hosting with hostgator on a reseller acct and I know there are other websites on my acct, but from what I understand none really all that big and not forum related type websites. My guy is trying to get me to go to a dedicated server and I don't understand all of this, but I don't see how that will eliminate my problems.
I'm not sure what I have done within that amount of time to do anything other than possibly signing up for the Mochi whatever the hell it is through v3arcade. What I have done(today) is disabled the arcade, took out anything in my file directory associating my site to them and in the process of deleting my acct with them.
Can anyone help me....what the heck else can I do, what can I check?
my website is www.themidwesthunter.com
Thanks!! I need help.

HG has relatively low sql limits - like 25 connections. Depending how they're using the board, that may top out around 50-100 concurrent users. Good move dumping the arcade - ditto any chat rooms.
But your next step up (if still needed) is a VPS, not dedicated.

If you are on a dedicated server then you can adjust the MySQL settings to avoid getting this error. I suggest you post a server optimization request at vBulletin.com.

I have no idea about hosting, what it takes or really what much of anything means...so I need it all dumbed down. ha, ha
What is a VPS?
EDIT....ok, I figured out what that was. :-)
Here's my scenario though.....
I have a reseller account with HostGator. I have an agreement with who I'm going through that they pay my monthly fee, but can resell my space(with max parameters set in place). Good deal in the beginning from what I thought. What I'm dealing with now are database errors from time to time(way more often than I can stomach) because of too many open connections and I sense that my website is slowly becoming slower and slower in performance as time goes on. I find out this morning that there are a total of 28 domains on my account and 45-50 is the cap. Stupid me, I should have written into the contract a lower cap amount when we wrote it up. But I had no idea.
My vB forums has roughly 60-80+ users that log on per day and as AWstats says, I have on average of 1.2-1.5mil hits a month whatever that means. Average 15gb of bandwidth used per month with a high of 24gb and just under 2gb total disk spaced currently used. If you need more stats, let me know! Of course I expect my forums to grow, so I also need to factor in some room for growth but still at a very reasonable $$ rate. I can't continue the way things are going, so I need some opinions from all of you on what I should do. Who I'm going through, they recommend me going to a dedicated server. Which I personally think is BS because I don't feel that the size of my site and the traffic I'm getting even warrants that, but heck if I know. Does it???
What are my options.....what should I do?
Go back to my domain ONLY being on my reseller acct?
Dump Host Gator and go with someone else?
Go to a different hosting acct with Host Gator?
Anything else I may have missed?

My vB forums has roughly 60-80+ users that log on per dayThat's not relevant. What counts is how many concurrent users you have.
The whole reseller concept confuses me. Perhaps a first step would be to try a shared server somewhere on your own. But if you have a lot of simultaneous users, and can afford it, get a VPS.

Why don't do it at your own ? They don't invent the wheel a second time so tuning-primer / mysqltuner and maybe some profiling to see what your DB is doing all the time might help.
Same applies to all other services like Apache - apachetop as example or temporary running mod_status. :)
Depending on the OS - MySQL sometimes is configured to run with brakes enabled

How can I determine how many simultaneous users I have?

How can I determine how many simultaneous users I have?Monitor it. There's What's Going On on your forum home page, and there's a readout on the first page of your AdminCP. To some degree you can ignore the spiders, but not completely.

They don't need any access details, and you will not be charged for this service.

Would switching from a shared hosting plan on HG to a VPS account help with the too many connections issue?

VPS is still a shared server, but less so. However, if you're allowed 25 connections on both, then getting a VPS wouldn't do any good for this specific error. But I dunno - maybe they allow more for VPS.

According to online tech support you can up your concurrent connections via cpanel with VPS and dedicated servers.
