So guys I wanted to wait a while before posting this up so people could get a good opinion on vBulletin 4.0 so what do you guys think, is it worth upgrading from 3.8?
I have finally gotten the whole theme system mastered with 3.8 and I love creating styles, created 18 custom themes from scratch for vBulletin 3.8, and the massive change it the template system has kept me from upgrading thus far. Is vBulletin good enough to relearn the template system or no? Plus any other things about 4.0 that are better then its previous versions if so then what?

Well, vBulletin 4 has a lot of features like Profile Customisation removed.
Don't bother upgrading to it, until all of the features from vB3 are actually present.

vB 3.8 series has a lot more mods right now than vB4. If you change to vB4 then you will be losing the ability to install a lot of these mods.
We've lost half our userbase after switching to VB4.

I wasn't aware that one qualified as "a lot". Regardless...
I'd set up a test board and do any tinkering with vB4 there. I'd hold off on doing the actual upgrade for a while until you are confident that it'll be for the better. vB4 was rushed to gold status, but it's improving with each version and is the future of vBulletin. You'll probably upgrade eventually, so you might as well familiarize yourself with it now.

In my opinion it was worth upgrading for the new way of handling attachments and images alone.

In my oinion it is worth it as well. But why don''t you find out for yourself? It is the best way in my opinion. Set up a test vb 4 forum and then play around with it and see how you like it.

Download it and play with it in a test forum. Don't blindly upgrade. It's maddening.

I think it was worth it. We're having a great time with it. Ignore the people that haven't actually tried it - they're just trying to justify not having to deal with it.

i love it.. though i never had vb3..
the only bugs i know off is the alignment bug on the cms..
but all that can be easily fixed and quite frankly contributes to your learning experience..
other than that i hat not been having problems..
ive been able to do what i want without fail, and im a newbie..
does it cost you to upgrade? like 170?
i guess if it was costing to upgrade i would wait until vb5 if i was running vb3..
then the change would be greater and worth the cost..
but thats just me..

I paid $250 for the upgrade from 3.8 forum only to 4.0 gold (forum, cms and blog). Worth every cent.

Hmmm I have only been hearing about the bad stuff with it lately so i figured i should start a thread with an unbias opinion. I did install it on a test site which is when i realized the template system had changed which is still a huge issues for me. I think that the vBulletin template system was a change for the worce. I think I'll set up a test board and keep watching the updates and if they add they add features I might upgrade. Or else I wil stick with vBulletin 3.8. Also is their a way to purchase 3.8 anymore?

In my opinion you shouldn''t let the hearsay of others influence you when making a decision or forming an opinion. But try to create the opinion and make the decision based on your personal experience only.
