Any news about a version for vB 3.8.x? :)

A heads up ... :)

I've been using this add-on for a few years, right through from v3 and it's great. Thanks for bringing it forward to v4 of vBulletin.

I've encountered my first SQL error with it... I've substituted X's for security...

Database error in vBulletin 4.0.4:

Invalid SQL:
INSERT INTO inactiveuserlog (username,userid,dateline,validemail,email)
VALUES ('Tester's MFG','xxxxx','1282997017','1','jay@xxxxxx.com');

MySQL Error : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's MFG','xxxxx','1282997017','1','jay@xxxxxx.com')' at line 2
Error Number : 1064
Request Date : Saturday, August 28th 2010 @ 08:03:37 AM
Error Date : Saturday, August 28th 2010 @ 08:03:38 AM
Script : http://www.xxxxxx.com/admincp/cronadmin.php?do=runcron&cronid=102
Referrer : http://www.xxxxxx.com/admincp/cronadmin.php?do=modify

I believe the problem is the apostrophe in the user name. I re-ran the cron job after changing the user name, simply eliminating the ' before the S and the cron job ran fine, although I'm not sure it actually processed this record a second time.

Am I correct in my assumptions? Why would vBulletin accept registration from a user with an apostrophe then this mod fail on the SQL insert?

Thanks for any feedback... :)

Badger

No. Not at all. People just download it and install it and then it sits there doing nothing. It's a placebo. :rolleyes:

Works really well, but it crashes on usernames who have an apostrophe in them ... ;)

Other than that, I've been using it for years and it's really helpful ... :)

Hi guys! Sorry I haven't updated this in a while. Life has not been very forgiving since the last release February 2010. My computer had a melt down and I just recently found a job full time last month. I've even had to take my own site (TalkVirginia) down temporarily. I am planning another release but I still have a few things on the priority list that I need to clear first. Thank you all for your patience and for enjoying this addon.

It's still doing that? :confused: Ok, I'll have another look at that. Is there anyway you can PM me some examples of what it's crashing on?

Yes, you are correct in your assumptions.. I did suggest a manual fix for this though. Below is the link for it:

No problem Jim ... :)

Thanks for following up back here and I do understand how real life gets in the way of our hobbies ... :D

This mod is probably the most valuable of any we use. It continually reinforces with our members that we're still here and we also use it as a tool update them on new additions to the board that might find of interest.

Thanks for keeping it alive and relevant through multiple iterations of vBulletin. :up:

The single most useful enhancement we could have to it (in my opinion) would be the automatic handling of bounced emails, that we now handle manually through this separate add-on mod in conjunction with yours.

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=138884

Even though it's for v3, it still functions fine in v4.04 and it would be great if that author would give you permission to incorporate his code into yours here, as it would save us hours in manually dealing with bounced inactive email accounts.

Thanks again .. :)

Regards,
Badger

Question 1;

Usergroups
Which usergroups do you want to monitor for inactivity?

Excluded User IDs
List the userids that you do not wish to send reminder email to here.

Must Excluded User IDs be part of Usergroups ?

Question 2;

Inactivity Emails: Receive Inactivity Reminder Email from Administrators

Members will receive an email if they have been inactive for more than 7 days. If you do not wish to receive these emails, you may optout by unchecking this option.

How do I change 7 days to 30 days ?
How do I remove this option ?

Still flaky.

For example, the Unsubscribe feature appears to be non-functional.

For example, I got this letter today from one of our forum members:

i have unsubscribed already. i just tried again, and got the same message i told you about before:

"Our records indicate that your subscription to our mailing list has already been cancelled. Please contact an Administrator if you believe you've reached this message in error."

but i keep getting messages asking me to come back to the forums.

how am i supposed to make them stop if you can't remove my address?

That member isn't the only one. When will there be a fix?

Peace,
Gene

Tagged. As soon as that feature where it can detect bounces, flag the user & send a PM is ready, will install & PayPal a much deserved contribution :) (seriously, that final feature would be absolutely killer for those of us with larger forums.)

hi i uploaded the files in the upload folder into the root. But when i hjave to import the xml file there are 2 of them! they are:

bitfield_remindermail.xml and cpnav_remindermail.xml

Do you mean that we have to upload the other file that isn't in the upload folder and import that file, which is called:

product-remindermail.xml

bit unsure what to do here :S sorry bit of a novice!

great mod, use it for gaming site to ensure we maintain a set of active clan members

Just 1 Q
Is it possible to get a summary of how many reminders have gone to what users?
I've set it so users must post every 3weeks, if they don't the inactive reminder kicks in and will send the reminder 3 times with a gap of 3 days and it works really well..
What I now need is to identify those guys who have received the reminders and decide to either reset the reminders (if they were on hols for example) or delete their user accounts if they've received all 3 (even if email wasn't sent).

Looks like the extra quotes in the username are causing it. There are 2 places to change that should fix it. To fix this manually, do the following:

1. Open the reminderemail.php file in the {forumroot}/includes/cron folder
2. Scroll down and insert the following code after 361, just before the line where $sql = "INSERT INTO " is getting set:

$username = addslashes($username);

3. Save and close the file.

4. Open the inactivitylog.php file in your admincp folder
5. Scroll down to line 133 and replace it with the following line of code.

$username = stripslashes($log['username']);

That should do it. I'll upload a new zip with this fix this weekend.

I'm still getting this error and I believe it is because the value inserted into the database is $this _username and not $username:

$sql = "INSERT INTO " . TABLE_PREFIX . "inactiveuserlog (username,userid,dateline,validemail,email)
VALUES ('$this_username','$userid','". TIMENOW ."','$valid','$toemail')";

Error:

INSERT INTO inactiveuserlog (username,userid,dateline,validemail,email)
VALUES ('userna' me','xxx','xxxxxxxxxx','x','xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx');

My apologies to everyone for not staying on top of this mod for several months. Suffice it to say that life has had me busy in other areas. I think things are under some level of control at this point and I can safely say I'll be picking this mod back up in January 2011.

For more good news, I've asked for permission the author has given me their blessing to use the code from the previous ezBouncer mod (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=138884) in this mod so it will be a bit easier now to track bounced reminders.

I'll be going back through the threads here and will address these issues in the next update. If you have any questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

It's not working correctly. I get mails from user reminder letting me know that it wasn't able to send mails to email addresses that I know for sure that are valid and can receive the notifications o reminders.

This is because one of them is my mailbox that I use with a test user that I created some time ago.

Is there a bug that doesn't let it work correctly?

I wish I had something definitive as far as a fix, but in all honesty, I was able to start working on the addon again within the last week or so. I had to take a break from it for many reasons including family, and work. In the mean time, while I'm working on fixes and new features, I'd recommend either turning the addon off or perhaps increase the amount of time inbetween when reminders go out. This weekend I am going to go through this thread and gather up all the issues everyone is currently having. I know some are still having issues with special characters in usernames. There are also some back end things I'd like to clean up too. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Thanks. I installed it and have tested it to send mail to one of my own user accounts. It works great in 4.1.2 except for one thing - the "From" email that it sends from is blank. My forum sends emails and they show up from the webmaster email and have the site name on them, but this one sends them with no sender at all.

Also, for a future feature it would be nice to be able to send test messages right from the plugin settings page. Just enter an email to test it and send one right then.

Have a bit more info on the blank "from" email problem. Whenever this mod sends emails to a member the "from" is totally blank, and when it sends a report stating that it sent at least one email the "from" on that report email is also blank. However, if it does not send any emails to users then when it send the report stating it had no email to send it comes with the "from" filled in with my forum name.

Strange eh?

Thanks for the info. Do you have the webmaster field in Vb options filled in? I don't have the code in front of me since I'm at work but if I remember correctly there is also an optional field under the addon settings. Do you have anything set there?

If you wouldn't mind and have a chance, could you provide some screen shots on how you have the addon configured? Hopefully I can reproduce the issue.

Thanks again :)

Hi TalkVirginia,

Yes, I have the webmaster field filled in. As I stated earlier, when it doesn't have any inactive users to send me to, the report email looks fine and it comes "from" my forum name. It's only when it has inactive users that the "from" fields are send as blanks. If the name of my forum or wbmaster email were missing in my settings, I don't think it would ever have a "from" sender right?

As requested, here are some screenshots of my settings (one of them is altered for privacy, but you get the idea). If you need anything else let me know.

I get the following error when running the cron:

Database error in vBulletin 4.1.3:

Invalid SQL:
SELECT * FROM user
WHERE lastactivity < '1298193385' AND
emailDate < '1300785385' AND emailCount < '1' AND options & 16 AND usergroupid IN ('2') LIMIT 0, 3;

MySQL Error : Unknown column 'emailDate' in 'where clause'
Error Number : 1054

And when I want to reset the reminders I get this:

Database error in vBulletin 4.1.3:

Invalid SQL:
UPDATE user
SET emailDate = '0',
emailCount = '0';

MySQL Error : Unknown column 'emailDate' in 'field list'
Error Number : 1054

EDIT: Nevermind!
I figured out this had something to do with the old install (after reading the thread) so I completely uninstalled and installed again and now it's working.

I believe I should be able to release a fix for this and a few other issues in the next week. I've also reworked some of the logic for when reminders are sent out as well as a new reminder template manager.

I am working on adding the email bounce detection and I received the ok to reuse code from a couple addon's that some of you have PM'd me about. It's taking a bit longer to work that into the mix, but I believe it will be good once it gets in there.

Thank you. The problem with us is the fact that the ability to opt-out of the mailings is non-functional. I've had to make excuses, but we could get into trouble with that, because of CAN-SPAM requirements and such.

Peace,

Just a quick update before I head off to bed. :) I think I made some good progress on these fixes this weekend with it being Mother's day weekend. Will see how things go this week.

If something seems to not work with the addon or it's sending out too much reminders, please disable it until I can release a new version. I apologize for the inconvience. I'm specifically addressing the opt out issue right now.

Thanks again for your patience.

Hello TalkVirginia,

I'm looking forward to using this mod.

I'm slightly confused by your last post. I am relatively new to vbulletin so please bear with me.

Has the mod been updated from last Saturday?
Has the addon fixed previous problems?
Or will the new version (2.1.2) resolve problems plus an on/off option in the AdminCP?

Thank you.

$uheaders .= "From: " . $vbulletin->options['bbtitle'] . " Reminder Service <" . $webmaster_email .">\r\n";

I don't want the from address to be the bbtitle, but a simple name + email adres.
The bbtitle is messing things up.

I'll try, but there seems to be an issue with changing the email headers in vBulletin or atleast I haven't been able to find info on how to do it. That line of code you're showing in the quote I took out for that reason because it wasn't changing it correctly. It was changing it to "From: Site Title <Site Title>" with quotes around the first Site Title. As soon as I removed the uheaders line it started working correctly. I'll try to work on that more.

I personaly use SMTP as my mail servers are spread among several IP's causing less trouble from providers such as yahoo and hotmail who will block IP's when you're sending large amounts of mail.

But as for bounces I use a pop3 box.

I wanted to post an idea I had for discussion. I was analyzing where inactivity is being based on last post date. Currently there is no other criteria being used so when grace period for inactivity is reached a member will start getting reminders the day after. Granted my plan is to adapt this add-on to something similar to the rules criteria for when notices are displayed, but for now I was thinking that the inactivity criteria should be opened up instead of basing it on one or the other.. (ie. Last Post Date, Last Visit date...) but have the option to base inactivity on last post date if the member's last visit was greater than or equal to whatever number of days you choose. Make sense? I'm open for input and would be interested to hear yours.

Thanks,
Jim

You are correct. That being said, is there anyone basing inactivity on lastpost date? Would anyone like to see more criteria added similar to the notices? ... or would anyone like me to take lastpost date out all together.

I use it by last activity, but someone might (maybe even I) use it for both things. If you could as 2 in one, to remind those who didn't log in and didn't write anything in set period. With different messages, what would make it a very long list of settings.

Don't know, bothering users isn't best strategy. Maybe having last activity is enough?

Is your inactivity grace period based on Last Post or Last Visit?
According to those dates:
If Last Activity is around the same date as Last Post it's been 409 days roughly.
otherwise it's been 56 days.

My setting is based on last activity, because my opinion is that you might bother members too often if you set it by last post.

march 27 to may 21 = 55 days
april 8 to may 21 = 43 days

Agreed. Either Last Visit or Last Activity. Yeah, with 55 days and 43 days, reminders should not be going out that soon. Are you sure you don't have your mod set to be based on Last Post? That's the only way that they would be going out so soon. Make sure you save your mod settings at least once before actually using it. I've noticed that after it's first installed, it will used whatever is in memory at the time it was installed. So I recommend setting it how you want it to operate then click the submit button.

I can't tell if it's working because none of my test accounts has received any reminders. They do have valid email addresses. I did receive the following email early this morning:
Members who have become inactive based on their last visit date and never received a reminder email:Emails sent to:
Nixon11,the_mask_lover,hithit,drvenom,MrsWrite,I also ran the cron job manually a few minutes ago, and got this:
Inactive User Reminder Emails
Looking for members who have become inactive (based on their last visit date) and never received a reminder email...

5 inactive members(s) found!
Sent To: ManilaGurL
Sent To: meerulfx
Sent To: Kailash
Sent To: surfville
Sent To: whitemusk

Looking for members who have become inactive (based on their last visit date) and
haven't received a reminder email in the last 45 days...

No inactive member(s) found based on last visit date!

DoneWhich also generated another email to me that said this:
Members who have become inactive based on their last visit date and never received a reminder email:Emails sent to:
ManilaGurL,meerulfx,Kailash,surfville,whitemusk, None of the above user names are test accounts, and shouldn't those be mentioned as well? How can tell if inactive users themselves are actually getting the reminders?

I've decided to make things a bit easier with the mod so I'm planning on stripping out the logic that will base inactivity on last post and last visit. I'll be basing inactivity on last activity.

Thank you for the info - I'll look into this and post a fix as soon as I can.

EDIT: AH, Ok.. I see the problem. If you don't mind and feel like you can make the change yourself. Here's how you can do it.

1. Open the <forum>\includes\functions_remindermail.php
2. Find:

Lines 91 and 212.

"SET rmEmailDate = UNIX_TIMESTAMP(), ";

3. Remove the comma at the end of TIMESTAMP() on both lines.

4. Save the file and you should be good to go.

If you decide you don't want to edit it yourself, I've attached a fixed file to this post. Just drop it in your forum includes folder.

Let me know if you have any other issues.

Thanks,
Jim

just uploaded the file, will let you know how it goes. thanks!

We got one serious, serious problem with your new version.

This option:

Usergroups
Which usergroups do you want to monitor for inactivity?

It doesn't work. I've been manually moving bounced messages to another usergroup, since you don't seem to have a proper bounce management system. But that group, although not checked, was sent email anyway. So suddenly I've got hundreds of bounces.

Ouch.

The only group that I checked is Registered Users, by the way.

You gotta fix that one ASAP, and then handle bounce management somehow, such as automatically moving bounced messages to a different usergroup.

Peace,
Gene

P.S. I'm curious about your paranormal research since I happen to host a nationally syndicated radio show, The Paracast, which covers the subject. :)

I have given this mod another try with the newest update. (2.2.0)

Regarding the problem I had...
Could it be an old bug?
I have read all the posts of this mod, and found 2 other people who had the same problem.

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=2130827&postcount=296

I also have a question.
I have set the "Only send once?" at Yes.

What happens if a inactive user reads the mail, decides to log in again and then in a while becomes inactive again?

Thanks,
Stefan.

P.S.
Might want to take a look at this...

They would get only one email regardless. Here's why:
If only sending once
Get members that have been inactive and have never received a inactive reminder.
else (Send emails more than once based on the following criteria)
Get members who have become inactive and have never received a reminder.
Get members who have been inactive and have not received an email since the last reminder was received. This is based on the number of days set in the frequency at which reminders go out ("How often should we send reminder email" setting.
SendReminders
If admin reminder report is enabled
Send Admin reminder reportThat's all there is to it. Any questions? :)

In other words...

If you set the grace period for them to become inactive 60 days from their last activity date. On their 61st day they should get a reminder if they've never received one. This will set a flag so that the next time they become inactive for 60 days they won't get anymore emails if the mod is set to send only one email.

If set to send more than one.. same as above except the mod will look to see if they received an email previously.. and how many days it's been. For instances. If they have been inactive for greater than 60 days, let's say they have been inactive for 150 days and you have the "How often should we send reminder emails" setting set to 30 days, they should recieve an email every 30 days within that 150 day period which would be 2 times (150 - 61 = 89 / 30 = 2.966).

Make sense?

I added a thumbnail 4 posts up...

The data of the usernames is gone when I click them in the reminder mail log.

Edit:

Pfffff, luckely when i do a search of the email address, all the data of the user shows up.
So only when I click on their names in the log, I get an empty user info.
Exactly the same as when i manualy should add an user. That field I get.

If I understand correctly, mod will send only one email. Even if they return and become inactive again. Can you change this behavior? I'd like that this settings mean that my users are bothered whenever they become inactive after certain period of time I define.

If they come back, they are active. After some time they may become inactive and I want them to remind again.

Anyway...
To improve this mod..

Maybee you can add this in a next update?

A member is inactive for 60 days.
He'll be send an email on day 61.
Member becomes active again.
---------
Member becomes inactive again after several months.
Member gets a reminder again.

That was what I ment a few posts ago.
I only want to send a member 1 reminder mail when they become inactive(I want to bother my members as less as possible)

Inactivity Log Bug:

When you go to prune the inactivity log, it can not find the
"pruned_inactivitylog_successfully" phrase. In addition, it is unable to locate the redirect page.

This has been fixed in the attached file. Upload the attached file to your AdminCP folder and overwrite. I'll update the product and update the zip in a later release.

To fix the phrase issue manually do this:

Note: It may be necessary to place your site in debug mode for this.

1: Go to Languages & Phrases....
2: Search in Phrases...
3: In the search form, leave all fields at there default except the following:

Search for Text: pruned_inactivitylog_successfully

Search in... Phrase Text and Phrase Variable Name

Click "Find"...

Click Edit in the Phrase Search Results

In the Phrase edit form, change the Phrase Type to "Error Messages".

Leave all other fields as they are.

Click "Save"

If you placed your site in debug mode, take your site out of debug mode now.

You're done.

Hi Alan,

You have the option to set the mod to send either a single reminder or if you want, you can send multiple reminders. There is also the option to set a maximum limit of reminders. For instance, you only want to send 20 reminders, and they member will not receive anymore after they get the 20th reminder. If the member becomes active, the mod will not reset the reminder count. In addition to this, the inactivity grace period or how long should a member be away from your site to be considered inactive? Some say 30 days, others say 60 days, or maybe 90 days. To completment this setting as I've mentioned in other posts the setting to define how often an member will receive a reminder after they have become inactive.

Does this answer your question?

Ok, you confirmed what I thought you said previously.

Is it possible that you program your mod that if members become active that resets reminder count completely for him?

For example, if I set sending only one mail after 30 days of inactivity, member might get back and after some time again become inactive. But, with mod made this way, second time he becomes inactive he wouldn't receive any reminder emails. This isn't good in my opinion.

I think that every inactivity period should be considered separate from all others inactivity periods and treated as such.

You have it now programmed as only one inactivity period that could be interrupted with periods of activity. And this restricts how we can use this mod very much.

If I want to send 20 reminders, I want to send 20 reminders for every inactivity period my users make, not in total for this user.

Hi cbi,

My apologies for missing your post. If I may ask, what version of vb are you using?

Both 3.8.x and 4.x.x versions are very similar in code however the difference is in how templates are rendered. I've also fixed some bugs in the mod so I would recommend updating to the current release if you haven't already.

Things to check on test accounts:
All inactivity now is based on last activity of the member.
Make sure they are able to receive emails from the administrator.

What I did when creating a test account is set the join date to like 1/01/2000
and last activity to 1/01/2005. Again, make sure the test account is set to accept emails from the administrators, then manually run the cron task. I'm pretty sure I have the criteria locked down and working at this point if you're using the current recent. Check the recent posts I've made since there are a few patches though and an additional plugin to reset inactive members when they return.

Try that and let me know if you have any more issues or questions.

It seems the User ID is missing in the Unsubscribe link in the email. Could that be the problem?

The zip file has some duplicate files and folder. It looks like the older .xml product file is still in there in addition to the new file modified yesterday. May be confusing for some.

I tried to update the Product with Add/Import product, tested again but that didn't fix the problem. Do I need to install the existing product first and then install the new one? The instructions for this mod mentions this for older versions only.

OMG!!! :mad: Sometimes I really hate Windows 7. I've updated the zip again and will upload.
Import the product XML in the zip, and upload the files in the zip. Make sure you check the "overwrite" option on the import. Also if you have made any changes to the email template phrases, please back them up first. They will be overwritten. If this doesn't seem to work, uninstall it and reimport the product xml.

The others should work. Lastactivity wasn't being exported, so that is why. I'll add it to the last. If you want to make the edit yourself, you can do the following:

1. open the functions_remindermail.php in your forum's includes folder.
2. scroll down to line 163 and press enter to make a new line.
3. add the following line:

$lastactivity = $row['lastactivity'];

4. Save the file and upload to your forums includes folder.

Add the variable to your email template.

As for the bounced back emails, ignore that for now. I haven't put that functionality in yet. That will be in a future release.

Thanks, but I found some inconsistencies with actual variables and those in manual.

Here, take a look:

In manual:

Exporting the following additional values which can be used in reminder email templates if desired:
$lastvisit - Formatted Date/Time Value - members last visit to the site.
$lastactivity - Formatted Date/Time Value - members last activity on the site.
$lastpost - Formatted Date/Time Value - members last post date on the site.
$lastreminder - Formatted Date/Time Value - Date member was sent last reminder email.
$days_since_lastpost - Number of days since member last posted.
$days_since_lastreminder - number of days since last reminder was sent.

And here's the code I see in php file:

$lastvisit = $row['lastvisit'];
$lastactivity = $row['lastactivity'];
$lastpost = $row['lastpost'];
$dayssincelastactivity = $row['days_since_lastactivity'];
$dayssincelastvisit = $row['days_since_lastvisit'];
$dayssincelastpost = $row['days_since_lastpost'];

You don't mention $dayssincelastactivity at all, and the spelling in manual is wrong (you use _ between the words in manual). Also $lastreminder is missing in code, or is created somewhere else (didn't checked other files for it, just it's not in this php file).

:eek: Ok. In the interest of making sure updates are correct going forward, I'm going to space out releases and pay closer attention to details. Recent updates have been too quick and I've over looked some things which has made quality in the product and support less than desireable. I'm going to look at the errors that are posted and determine the severity. If something is broken, and it's an easy fix and does not impact a lot, I'll try to get it out within a few days otherwise other fixes will be released as time permits so that I can properly evaluate and test each bug.

Hi Virginia, thanks for the reply; I've been quite busy as well, and just got around to trying your suggestions.

My apologies for missing your post. If I may ask, what version of vb are you using?4.1.3 PL1.

All inactivity now is based on last activity of the member.
What I did when creating a test account is set the join date to like 1/01/2000
and last activity to 1/01/2005.The test account I'm using has had no activity since March 3, 2010.

Make sure they are able to receive emails from the administrator.Yes, it is set that way.

So I ran the cron manually, and the next screen contained this info:

Inactive User Reminder Emails
Looking for members who have become inactive and never received a reminder email...

5 inactive members(s) found!
Sent To: lunasphaira
Sent To: clourleculp
Sent To: dhandaulat33
Sent To: rivesmerb
Sent To: thebeeststf

Looking for members who have become inactive and
haven't received a reminder email in the last 45 days...

No inactive member(s) found!

Done
My test account does not appear in that list. Is it because I've never posted with that account? If so, does that mean that all inactive members who have never posted will never receive a reminder?

Hi,

I have the following settings...

Enable Inactive User Reminder Emails: yes
Only Send Once?: no
Maximum Email To Send: 0
Inactivity Grace Period: 20
Number of Reminder Emails to Send Per Batch: 80
How often should we send reminder email: 20
Usergroups: registered members
Excluded User IDs: none
Email Format: HTML
Enable Admin Email Report: yes
Enable Logging: yes
Inactivity Log Duration: 30

vB: 4.0.6 PL2
2.2.0 of Inactive users (upgraded today to latest Version)

I'm finding that the same members are being emailed pretty much daily from the reports I'm seeing and also one of the members I have registered myself but also inactive which is receiving emails.

Why is this?

If this doesn't seem to work, uninstall it and reimport the product xml.I didn't re-upload all the files/folder in the Upload folder in the zip file so it is working now.

The ID numbers are now showing up in the log and email Unsubscribe link. But when I click the link, I am getting this message on my site: Could not find phrase 'error_unsubscribe_done'.

When I click on the link again, it shows the user already unsubscribed so it seems to be working fine, except for showing that error message.

Also after testing recent errors on both my test site and my live site, everyone should make sure they have the latest files from the zip file on their site. For the moment, I'm unable to reproduce the errors mentioned.

I'm also working on a tool that will show all inactive members on a separate screen as a side check. It will allow you to set custom values as well as the option to use the same values from the mod settings screen.

Or the member becomes inactive and you send out 20 reminders, the member doesn't come back and is removed after the 20 reminder? I'll have to think about that one. :) Thanks for the idea! I'll add that to my to-do list and see if anyone else is interested in that.

I'd like to make sure that the current features are not giving anyone any additional issues first. Also I still need to add bouced email detection which I'm currently working on.

Only true for add-ons that extended or modified the old editor. These obviously have to be reworked. Other add-ons like this one should be fine.

Hi TalkVirginia,

this is long needed mod and I thank you for that one. It does what it should do. But there is a major downside (in particular there are 2) in using it - and yesterday we´ve learned it the hard way, what it is about.

Our ISP forwarded us abuse notices they´d received after installing your mod. As most of the forums out there, since the launch on the edge of this century we have gained a large number of accounts in the database (~30k). In the meanwhile many of them have invalid email-adresses, since the accountholder deleted or changed his emailaccount.

On that basis the mailhosting companies noticed a bounce rate, which has reached the indication level for spam. AFAIR, the common treshhold is at 10%. For that reason hotmail was the first who dropped an abuse report to our ISP, a second one followed by a european hoster forced our ISP to shut down our server immediatly. That´s a responsible behaviour, so we don´t argue with em. They got in contact with us and we were able to explain what happend, deactivated the reminder mod and we were back online.

Your mod, like any other mod referring to email features, shows the lack of checking if a users mailaccount is still existing before sending and a bounce management. Nothing brings you and your forums closer to the spam blacklist, as sending out dozens of emails to not existing mailaccounts and sending these ones periodicly. That´s truly the best way to get your forums mailadresses and IP´s blocked.

What do you think? Could you implement at least a bounce management into this mod here? Something, that deactivates all email functionality for hard or softbounces and brings them to the usergroup for awaiting an email verification/activation? That could avoid a lot of trouble for forums with a userbase +10k.

Hi Marv,

First, let me say that I apologize for the issues the mod has caused. Secondly, I am sure you will be pleased to know I am currently working on a bounced email manager for this mod. Unfortunately, my time to work on development is limited and I will do my best to get something out as soon as my time will allow.

EDIT: Marv, I did a little research on checking to see if an email address exists before sending an email. It looks like most email servers are denying this validation to protect users from spambots. However, the closest that we can get to is at least checking to verify that the domain name is a valid mail server and that "MX" or mail records do exist on that server. I'm currently testing this change locally. If you would like to try this out now as long as you feel comfortable making the change yourself.

1. Open the functions_remindermail.php file that resides in your forums includes folder in your favorite text editor (such as notepad++ or textpad).
2. Scroll down to or about line 100.

Below this line:

$email = $row['email']; // user email address

Insert:

list($junk, $maildomain) = explode('@', $email);

3. Now.... On or about line 131:

Change:

if(is_valid_email($toemail))
{

To:

if (checkdnsrr($maildomain, "MX"))
{

This should cut down on some of the invalid emails that go out. Let me know how this works for you, or if you have questions.

Thanks

Greetings fellow VB admins,

As I'm working on the bounced email detection for this mod, I've been thinking that I may release the bounce detection as a separate addon. Here's a couple reasons why:

1. I know in the past since I've been working on the reminders addon I've gotten responses that it's confusing. Adding additional functionality and settings may only add to the confusion.

2. With all the additional settings for the bounce detection the settings screen is scrolling about 2 - 3 screens. More could be added which would make it even longer.

Just some thoughts I'm throwing out there. What are your thoughts. Tonight I'll post a screen shot of the settings screen and you can see what I mean. :)

How this will work together? This is main question. If it can work well together, no problem.

For example, if mail gets bounced, will user change his usergroup? This sometime would be good for me. I want just that users with bounced mail doesn't receive remainder mails.

Hi TalkVirginia,
somehow I must have missed your last post. I appreciate your fast response.

Your suggestion to check up on the domains seems to be a good effort, but wont get even close to what you are trying with the bounce manager now (based on EZ´s Bounce management?). The Domains will be there, yahoo, gmail, hotmail and all the other mailproviders. Guess that wont help much or is only the drop into the sea.

I´m looking forward to your newest announcement - or let me call it your new project. Personal I would recommend a seperate bounce mod. There are lot´s of email-mods and built-in vb functions which could benefit all from a sepereate one, in case someone don´t wants to install the email reminder.

Thumbs up, good to see you´re taking care of that.
Kudos.
