Has it ever happen to you when a user in a moment of angry deletes his/her account and later comes back? Or his/her account was deleted by the evil admin and all his/her posts appear as guests? If it has happen, then this mod is for you.

With this mod you can assign back his/her posts and threads. All the user has to do is to register again, be that with the same username as before or a new one. Then you can reassign back all their posts.

I know that this can be also done with a query at phpmyadmin, but this mod is meant to make it easier for those that are not so tech swavy and are not familiar with phpmyadmin and are afraid of messing things up.

Installation:

To install the mod, upload the admincp and includes folders to your forum root folder maintenaning the structure intact and then import the Restore Posts And Threads.xml file inside the mod package to Plugins&Products in the acp of your forum.

To make use of the mod go to the Maintenance area at your acp, click the drop down list and you will see a new option added called: Restore Deleted User. Click on it and configure it accordinly.

Note: After assigning the posts and/or threads, go to: Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Update Counters and run the Rebuild Thread Information, Rebuild Forum Information, Update User Names, Update Post Counts.

Note, before you run the last option ( Update Post Counts), read the description under the title.

If you will need support with this mod, then please post at the mod thread at my forum. Thanks :)

Be careful when you install this script
my DB was 300 MB
now it increased to 900 MB

The support of my hosting are trying to help me and nothing worked.
For some reason this script increased the DB
My site is slow now.

Suddenly need a lot of RAM

How many posts were restored when you used this mod? The mod itself doesn''t affect the db in that way. It simply runs the query needed to assign back the posts of the deleted user.

Maybe that is why. When you ran the update counter it increaed the db size. I just tried it with 1000 posts right now and the db size remained intact.

Yes I created that table and it's columns and it worked - so it might have been other things - but quite weird it comes after installation of this mod :(

But certainly nothing to do wiht that hack... working fine :)

OK, this mod restores/reassigns posts from deleted users to a new user ID.
What if you don't kow the old username?
All the posts from deleted users are attributed to "Guest", but Guest is not a username.
I believe "Guest" is User ID 0 (?)... Can we have a from User ID option?

I deleted a user by accident about a year ago before we upgraded to 4.0, the user set up his account again and I just gave him a big post count as he was quite active. Will this still work in restoring back his original posts because he is set as guest.

Yes, the uid option is for the user under whom the deleted posts and threads of the deleted user will go. For the guest part, no uid can be assigned as that covers all the guests. That is why the old username for the deleted user is required. So it affects only that particluar "guest".

Yes, it will. Simply follow the instructions at the mod settings and you should be all set.

The old usernames of the deleted users can be seen under their posts they made or you can see them at the database as well. Anyway, to do what you want, to assign posts of all guests to someone, run this query at your phpmyadmin or from Maintenance->Execute SQL Query in your Acp.

UPDATE post
SET username = 'posterusername'
WHERE userid = 0;

But first make a backup of your posts table. Also, change posterusername with the actual username to whom you want to attribute the posts of all guests and if your db tables have a prefix, include it in the query as well.

Let me know if you want to do the same with threads as well.

P.s. At vb.com you asked how to get back posts of deleted users that appear as guests btw and that is exactly what this mod does. Also, before you download and use a mod, it would be best if first you had a good look at the description :)

For the threads use this query:

UPDATE thread
SET postusername = 'posterusername'
WHERE postuserid = 0;

At vb.com from what I could understand at your post it was that you wanted to achive what my mod does. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Anyway, the above queries will achive what you want. Hope it helps.

Couple more questions sorry.

Say someone has deleted, does that mean all the log information for that person is also gone? I can see that someone has been deleted but going through the admin logs all I get is userid's, how do I compare the userID to name so I can figure out who deleted who?

Is their something else I could be looking for that's easier to look out for?

One quick question before I use this.

The instructions and a early post (post #33) say to use the same or different name of the deleted user.

A late post (post #50) in this thread says to use a different username.

Well, which one is it?

Thanks!

Note: After assigning the posts and/or threads, go to: Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Update Counters and run the Rebuild Thread Information, Rebuild Forum Information, Update User Names, Update Post Counts.

It works nearly perfect...
But.
When I assign the posts from the deleted user to the new user, the posts cannot be found by searching all posts of user .....

Second: the post count of the new user is not increasing.
Maybe this is also the reason why the posts can't be found?

I manualy have increased the post counter of the new user, but still no posts found.
I also updated the post counts on the admincp.

I get the same, you can do an advanced search for the members posts and it lists them all, and all posts seem to be assigned to that member, but members dont do advanced searches they click view all posts in the members profile. how do we sort this

Interesting behavior I observed with this tool.

I can recreate this issue at will. Has anyone else seen this?

It constantly runs queries to set userids against usernames as has been mentioned already on the thread.
This mod needs to be removed from here.

I do not know how your eyesight is pal, but before you download and use a mod, read the description first. It says right there with bolded and capital text as well:

Then after you are done restoring the deleted user/s, DISABLE it.

It can''t be clearer than that.

Videx
01-08-2012, 07:19 PM
Then after you are done restoring the deleted user/s, DISABLE it.Ouch! I saw that, but wasn't sure why you would want to disable a user after you just restored it. It didn't matter to me since I didn't actually need to restore anyone at the time.

So I vote YES it can definitely be made clearer. e.g. A line at the beginning of the installation instructions: "This mod should normally be disabled. Only enable it long enough to restore a member." Then at the end another line: "Now disable the mod and only enable it long enough to restore a member."

You might want to clarify your instructions and explain to people why they should disable it. Like Videx said I am not the only one and there are plenty of other people who have complained in the thread.
I'm personally throwing a tantrum because your horrible modification left my board sucking resources for quite some time before I narrowed it down to you. You should go as far as to putting a warning into the header, visible to admins, that the mod needs to be disabled, and a link to easily do that. I stand by my position that this modification should be pulled from vbulletin.org until you patch it.

You also wrote:
"I do not know how your eyesight is pal, but before you download and use a mod, read the description first. It says right there with bolded and capital text as well:

Then after you are done restoring the deleted user/s, DISABLE it.

It can''t be clearer than that."

Of course it can be made clearer. Stop clowning around.

Hi borbole,

I'm hoping you can help me, I've installed this on my test site running 4.1.10 or whatever the new version is :)

I can restore old posts/threads to a new users, that seems to work.

However when I get their user info profile and search for threads and posts by that user nothing comes up?

I've reset all the counters as described.

PS: I should say the post count display on the postbit seems to be correct for the user, but nothing when you search for new posts or threads

I installed and ran this. It worked, but I had to go and delete all users entries in the blog portion of the cms. When I went to the blogs it gave me a fatal error. I went in phpmyadmin and saw that the users old userid was still assigned to the blog entry. I changed the old id to the new id. That didn't work... still got a fatal error. I deleted the blog entries for the user and all is back to normal... I HOPE.

Don't use this mod on a big forum.
Mine is about 1 000 000 posts and there was 300 online users : i enabled it and forums came out of control, with only server errors because this mod execute an ugly sql request each time postbit_display_complete is called --> SQL crash alone, can't disable it.

:-\ I uninstalled this. Attempting to recover a user crashed the entire database. uninstalling (disabling all plugins) fixed the issue.

Last time when I tried, it crashed the entire database. I was forced to disable/uninstall to prevent further huge database loads.

The mod is updated. All the issues are fixed. Now the queries do not run at the postbit hook anymore. For more info, please check the new screenshot and info added at the OP.

I suggest to delete or turn off this mod right after use. It runs each second "UPDATE" command in MySQL for last restored user!
