HELP! how do i defend against Hackers?

Hackers???

i run vbulletin 3.6.8 on my website. (gonna download the patch for it today)

last evening between 5pm and 6:30 my site was hacked by this group.

the guy responsible was- T3eS
he took control of my username, i was able to regain control and reset my password

he also hacked this Australian visa website- http://www.australiavisa.com.au/


what can i do to protect my board?
or is it futile to even try?
any programs? codes? hacks? available to protect your website???
