using server side CRON Jobs

I remember there was cron-exec mod for 3.8 version that allows server side cron tasks execution/invoking on the boards that have slow traffic. Is there something similiar for 4.x version boards.. I've tried the one coded cor 3.6-3.8 and doesn't work.
