This is a small hack that it will allow you to turn off the public display of the version number of your vBulletin forum. You can enable and disable it at the Acp-Options-Forums Home Page Options.

I know that it can be easily done by changing the language phrase but this way is handier in my opinion.

Note: This mod it will hide the version at the footer only. It is meant to add some kind of security for ex, when hackers google for outdated version and hack forums at random.

To remove the version from showing when viewing the page source, do the following edits to the headinclude template

Find the following code:

<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin $vboptions[templateversion]" />

and change it to:

<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin" />

Don't you have to keep the version number to maintain the copyright?

This hack is probably meant for vB4, since earlier versions of vBulletin are copyrighted to Jelsoft. Only vB4 and later are copyrighted to vB Solutions.

No you dont have to show the version number to maintain copyright so long as you have

Powered by vBulletin? Version *.*.* Copyright ?2000 - 2010

EDIT: I've noticed after installing this that it removes the yabbseo copyright text as well but whatever :D:D

Installed but when you go to your Admin Panel log in it will still say the Version number on the log in box.

Its intended to hide the version number on public places as hacker can't view admin cp anyways unless they hack in.

Not true, this is the path of every vB Admin Panel, as long as it hasn't been changed: http://www.yourforumurl/admincp/index

Indeed. It will hide the version on forum display only.

Thats why people suggest to add a .htpasswd + .htaccess to the admin directory. Observe: http://vgchat.info/forum/admincp/

I don''t provide support through pm. Ask your question at the forums, thanks.

I didn't post this to be a smart butt, I posted it in case anybody tries to PM him with a question about the mod.

Why run a regex on every page just to remove the version number from the copyright. You'd be better off providing a different phrase or something. regexes are bad mk?

Yes, that is right. I don''t provide support through the pm :)

Anyway, simply import the new file and set Allow Overwrite to yes.

Can you please explain a little bit more?

You can easily acomplish the same goal (removing the version number) by editing a phrase. This saves you cpu cycles and is something you'd likely never have to worry about updating or breaking your pages.

Even like this you won''t have to worry about breaking your pages. Plus like this it supports multiple languages as well.

So instead of editing 1 phrase 1 time, you'd rather waste cpu cycles on every page view forever and ever?

Can you explain a bit more in details please by giving a few examples how this wastes cpu cycles on every page view forever and ever, as you put it?

Could you suggest a sample code for these files in order to establish the security on this folder? Thanks in advance.

Yes first you will want to use that link to create the htaccess file and then use this link to create the .Htpasswd file

Instructions to remove the version from showing at the page source were added at the very first post of this topic.

Great hack! Nice work!!! Thanks for all of your hard work on the scripts! :-)

Nominated for MOTM!

Is there still a way to externally view the version number, or does this hack pretty much take care of it?

There are numerous ways to find out which version you are running.
