View Full Version : Mini Mods - Hide Version Number. Updated with hiding the version everywhere automatically.

This is a small hack that it will allow you to turn off the public display of the version number of your vBulletin forum. You can enable and disable it at the Acp-Options-Forums Home Page Options.
I know that it can be easily done by changing the language phrase but this way is handier in my opinion.
Updated: With hiding the version in the templates automatically with thanks to Boofo.
Update again. Now it hides the version at the archives as well and therefore the version is hidden everywhere.

Is this allowed by IB? If yes, you should remove it from the Page's Source as well, if possible.

I am not sure I know what you mean if it is allowed by IB? Did you mean if vb allows it? if so, then yes. You are allowed to remove the version number.

You don't hide the version number from the js files.

It helps a bit on avoiding being targeted by the hackers that hunt for version vulnerabilities by googling for them and hacking forums at random.

You can remove that manually at the template where it is defined as my hack doesn''t do that. It simply removes it from the footer.

I was one of the first sites to upload to vbulletin 4.0 Beta. I literally went live when vbulletin was in beta. After that my site got hacked a bunch of times...and it was hackers searching for my specific version of vbulletin that targeted my site after looking at the logs.

I know what you mean and that is exactly the idea behind the mod although some may argue that it adds security through abscurity.

As stated above, the point for using this mod is to hide the version number when hackers google for outdated version and hack forums at random. It helps a lot in this case, trust me :)

Your wrong... this mod only removes the version number, but its useless because you would still appear on google because this is coded into one of the templates:
<meta name="generator" content="vBadvanced, vBulletin 4.0.1" />
Obviously you can take it out if you find the template (not changable in general settings), but you would have to do this every time you upgrade...
Doesnt help at all because google checks the meta rather than content in 99.99% of all cases...

I am not wrong at all. If you search at google for, Powered by vBulletin? Version 4.0.1, for ex, your forum will not come up in the search results, if the version number is hidden. And that is the wole idea of the mod as stated above numerous times.

In "Hide Version" pluginn find:$vbphrase['powered_by_vbulletin'] = 'Powered by <a href="http://www.vbulletin.com" id="vbulletinlink">vBulletin™</a><br />Copyright © vBulletin Solutions, Inc. All rights reserved.';

I had a message from vbulletin after installing this modification, please read.
Greetings- re: http://www.mysite.org/
It has come to our attention that all or part of the legally-required vBulletin copyright information has been removed or hidden from the footer template of your forum and as such contravenes the vBulletin License Agreement. You can read the License Agreement here:
http://www.vbulletin.com/order/license_agreement.php
The footer template must contain, at least, the following, it must be in English, and it must be readily visible:
Powered by vBulletin
Copyright ? 2010 vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
Please restore the missing information: Please restore the date to the copyright. If you have removed the date for security reasons, just the current year satisfies the legal requirement.
If you do not wish to display the vBulletin copyright information, you may opt to purchase the Branding Free option. The 'Branding Free' license is available at a cost of $170 per license and only applies to a single site/license. To purchase this log into the Members Area, click on 'Renewal/New Purchases', then 'Continue' to get to the Branding Free option.
http://www.vbulletin.com/members/
Once you have purchased this option, you will have the right to remove the vBulletin/vBulletin Solutions copyright info from the footer template. Note that this is for one license only and is in addition to the cost of the license. If you ever transfer this license, the branding free option will transfer with it.
Also please be aware that you must retain all copyright notices within the actual product programming code (these notices do not affect any visible vBulletin pages) and this does not allow you to re-brand the software with another name. It only allows you to remove the vBulletin/vBulletin Solutions copyright information.
(You may remove the logo and replace it with your own without purchasing the branding free option, but not the copyright information.)
Please take action to rectify the infringement within 28 days in order that the way forward can be determined. Please note that addressing the matter will prevent the possibility of the license being revoked, following which a new license will be necessary to continue running your vBulletin. In this eventuality, appropriate action may be taken by our copyright enforcement agency in accordance with DMCA rules. Thank you for taking care of this promptly.
All the best,
Marlena Machol
Links Submissions, vBulletin
http://www.vbulletin.com/
I have had to uninstall this mod because it hides the year 2010, just letting you know and others to prevent them getting the same notification from vbulletin.
Look forward to this being updated to conform with the legally-required vBulletin copyright information being shown then I will install it again.
Many thanks.

Here is a way to do the manual template edits from the first post via a plugin:
Hook Location: parse_templates
Title: headinclude version removal
Plugin PHP Code:
require_once(DIR . '/includes/adminfunctions_template.php');
// Remove version from showing when viewing page source
$find1 = trim(preg_replace('#^\$final_rendered = \'(.*)\';$#s', '\\1', compile_template('var SIMPLEVERSION = "{vb:raw vboptions.simpleversion}"')));
$replace1 = trim(preg_replace('#^\$final_rendered = \'(.*)\';$#s', '\\1', compile_template('var SIMPLEVERSION = ""')));

$replace2 = trim(preg_replace('#^\$final_rendered = \'(.*)\';$#s', '\\1', compile_template('<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin" />')));

IF anyone knows their vb stuff they would just go to:

Sounds interesting, please tell me how to do such a thing.
You need a .htpasswd and a .htaccess file.
Check if you can store the .htpasswd file outside the www root folder if possible. This depends on your host.
More information here: http://www.htaccesstools.com/articles/htpasswd/
Or just google for "htpasswd protection"
Setup a different user/password combination than your forum user.
so e.g. your vb admin user is
user: admin
password: vbulletin123
then choose this for your htpasswd protection:
user: techguru
password: methinks
Don't use the same login because then it is useless!
The .htaccess file goes into the /admincp folder (note the leading '.' which is important to hide the file)
The .htpasswd file goes in the best case outside of the folder that is accessible from outside. But you can also store it in the /admincp folder. (also note the leading '.')
Why doing this? If someone gets hold of your admin login then they still cannot login into your admincp!
You can / should do the same with the /modcp folder. But setup a different user / password combination there.

I'm on 4.1.10 and it works for me too.
I did have it installed ages ago though but it's stayed working through upgrades of VB.

You don't hide the version number from the js files.
<script type="text/javascript" src="clientscript/vbulletin_global.js?v=3612"></script>
Installed this mod and it's working as advertised, but I'm also curious about hiding the version number in the source as well. It's still fairly easy to figure out what version of the forum is running based on the v parameter being passed to the various scripts. Is this something that can be done as well? Mainly just for people looking for future vulnerabilities and all that.

Try this but try it on a test skin/install first! And please help with feedback if you do to help with troubleshooting.

Just updated to vbulleting 4.2.3 Beta 1 - The mod is removing the 4.2.3 part but the "Beta 1" still remains on the end.
Any suggestions to fix that?

Search for phrase "powered by" and remove "Version {1}"
