No Parse Smilies for usergroups?

I cant figure out if there is a way to do this or not?

I want certain user groups smiles to parse and others to not parse... simple but cant figure it out.

There's no setting in 3.x that I can find for this. You might need to request a modification be written (either paid or unpaid, depending on your budget).

I figured it would just be a minor template edit or something.

You'd need to edit the raw PHP files for that. The code is in the $postbits variable, which isn't directly editable through the template system.
