No one can always guarantee if it's safe to download anything from here or elsewhere.

you need to be cautious and make sure you are backing up every time you make any type of changes to your site (even the smallest)....

but yes... downloading from vB is safer than downloading elsewhere...

and yes... people can definitely make changes to xml file or other necessary files if you download from untrustworthy websites

to be safe, never be the first couple of downloaders. Wait till a bunch of people download and post the results. Hopefully someone smarter than you spots something and warns people in that thread (not meant as a dig on you just mean someone better in the code aspect of the downloads)
