I am trying to find the best (aka, least admin overhead) way to block IP ranges by country. I know that there are ARIN and other full lists of IP CIDR blocks assigned to certain nations/regions and that I can construct an .htaccess file to do this and drop it in every folder... That is not my idea of simple, nor is it dynamic as the database changes. I have found a few software packages that tie into major firewalls to do this, but nothing for my situation (a vB 4 site on a shared host with no root access).
Has anyone seen a script (free or commercial) that can do this? Ideal would be a list of countries and just check the boxes of the ones you do not want to allow access.
In case you were wondering, I have a site that is about an organization that people from about 7 nations participate in - there are no other regions worldwide. In looking at my raw site statistics I see numberous (ie, thousands) of attempted hits at the default admin files, install files, etc. from countries like Lybia, Iran, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Saudi, etc. that have no legitamate reason for ever being on my site - and especially these particular pages. Since 99.9% of all hacking attempts come from countries that do not relate to my site, I would like to simply block them. Yes, I know they can use proxies or other comprimised boxes, but I am cutting out most of it...
Thanks!
