if you can use php.ini create one in your admincp and make the amount of mem = 8MB and increase by 4 (12, 16, 20, etc) until you stop getting this message.
Thanks for your advise, a higher Mem increase to 16 do the trick, it works well now :)

The file must have saved somewhere, otherwise you would not get the timing messages.
The database error means vbulletin failed to insert the completed ok message in the cronlog - the actual error suggests the database connection of the session running the task timed out.

How do I manually run this? (To test if it's working)
go into Scheduled Task Manager and hit run now

Installed. When I click 'run now' nothing happens tho. It just sits there and does not do anything? :(
I created a folder for backups like this, and this is how I entered it in the cron job. Do I need to add httpdocs, 2 dots, one dot? ./forums/backups/
This is the full path it is in (below),so please direct me? thx :)
englishbulldognews.com/httpdocs/forums/backups/
I am sure it is just an error in how I have entered the folder path, but I do not want to mess with it too much before I mess up my forum LOL

If it does nothing at all you have some sort of installation issue i would guess, it will always attempt to run, even if it then gives an error.

Paul,
I just want to say, this backup does not mean much sitting on the server
if the server crashes and they can not retrieve their own backup for
some reason, how about an email option to send us an email attachment
of the database when it is finished running?
very nice though...
Processed Database in 1.714 seconds
Backup Completed Successfully
Yes it would be great if you added an email option, as I have been manually saving the DB
daily to my drive, but relying on the server to hold the backup could be risky if
anything actually happens to the server...maybe multi backup...one saved
in backup, and the other emailed...that would be sweet.
I do have a question, when I did a manual backup of mysql vb it was
only 1,800kb but when the autoback run, it is 13,000+KB....
what am i missing here?
onehost
08-15-2010, 02:48 PM
I do not think this is working correctly, ever since I installed it, it seems to be
making the same backup over and over with the same KB, and instead
of creating a new backup file, it just over-writes the one that was there
before. I always backup using a different name just incase there are
errors produced in the first, so I always have a new file name for a
new backup...
Paul M
08-15-2010, 03:12 PM
It works correctly, but I cannot comment on how you have set it up on your server.
If your are creating the same filename each time then yes, it will overwrite any previous copy with the same name, that would need a very strange date setting.

right i have another question..
i need to allow write access to the backup directory..
but if i allow read & write access to everyone it could compromise the site...
any idea's on a safe way to allow write access for apache?
Paul M
08-17-2010, 01:40 PM
Either find out what userid apache is using and just allow it access (not sure how easy that is in linux), or use a directory outside of the web root, so only you have access via ftp.

Okay... I got several questions...
When I "Run Now", it takes 237 seconds, thats a little under 4 minutes. During this time, is my forum closed? The old version of this mod would close my forum, and I liked that. I would like to have my tables locked while this is running; but if the forum is not closed, then that would create an issue...
Next, the file it created was 415mb in size... according to PhpMyAdmin, my database is 490mb in size; why is there a difference? I am not using GZIP. If I use GZIP, it brings the file down to 108mb... wow...
If I enable "Repair Tables" option, it adds a whopping 12 minutes to the backup process! Is there a reason why repair and optimize would take this long? Is there a reason NOT to auto repair and optimize with each backup? Usually doing an R&P will remove 100mb of overhead from the database. (I backup once a week)
And is there a reason NOT to use blocked backups? It just seems like a great "in case shit happens" feature.
Paul M
08-22-2010, 12:31 PM
1. No, this does not close the forum. That option was removed as it was unreliable (on re-opening).
2. Database size and backup size are completely different things. Gzip will reduce the size greatly.
3. You do not normally need to use those options, in fact, if you did repairs daily it could possibly be detremental.
4. There is no reason not to use them if you prefer it - on most systems it will make very little difference.

Hello,
Installed, and everything working fine.
I would like to change the run-time from 6:00am to something earlier... like 3:00am.
I realize it is a cron job, yet I can't see it under my host's server Control Panel.
Where would I go about to change the run time of this cron job?
Much appreciated the help! :)

In triguns version you could close the forum while this was running.. Could this be implemented again?
Or somehow lower the load xD cause everytime this runs my whole server becomes unresponsive for like the 10 minutes it takes to perform the backup and then like 5 minutes afterwards also.. :(

Sorry but no, that wont be re-added. It was too unreliable, often leaving the forum closed after a backup.

I can?t get this to work. :(
When i start the backup manually all i get is this error-message:
The file does NOT exist, the backups-folder is empty
The error messages clearly tell you what is wrong - you have open_basdir restrictions in place on your server. If you dont know what that means then you need to consult your host.

OK.. basicly this means, that this AddOn is of no use for a lot of users....
What´s the problem with it?
The vB 3.8X version works fine on the same server.

OK.. basicly this means, that this AddOn is of no use for a lot of users.
No, it does not mean that.
What?s the problem with it?
There is no problem with it, as I already told you, those errors are your server set-up. You have restrictions in place preventing you saving to the location you have set.
der_darkon
09-20-2010, 07:58 PM
I don´t get it.
The older version for 3.8.X is working fine on the same server with the same restrictions.
What has changed, that the version for 4.X won´t work?

Why can't we just use the Backup Wizard with CPANEL 2 Accelerated to do a backup of all files and the database?
In the manual for vBulletin it says to select drop tables. That is the only thing that is not selected in standard setup of mysql. When I use the backup wizard it doesn't give you the option to select anything any options to back.
Is that ok?
Paul M
09-27-2010, 11:27 AM
I dont know anything about cpanel, I dont use it.
Dropping tables doesnt sound a very good plan - you do know that means deleting the table ?
Parture
09-27-2010, 08:33 PM
Ya I know what drop table means. In the manual it says when backing up...
http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/
In the second area, called SQL Options, make sure you have the following boxes checked:
Structure
Add 'drop table'
Add AUTO_INCREMENT value
Enclose table and field names with backquotes
Data
When I go into my SQL all of these are selected already except for Add 'drop table' that is: Add DROP TABLE / VIEW / PROCEDURE / FUNCTION
If this is not selected when backing up is that ok? If that's ok then I think I am ok to use CPANEL 2 Accelerated 2 and don't have to use any of the various other methods for backing up like Shell/SSH and other methods.
If not, I think I should export my database from php admin so I can select this box that is not currently selected.
If my thinking is right let me know. That CPANEL 2 built in backup method is really easy.

Ah, that means add a drop command to the backup itself - yes you should normally do that as it makes restores work better.
If you want to use cpanel or php admin to manually run backups then go ahead, its your choice. I prefer to just let vb do it all automatically each night, without any need for me to do anything. :)

That's interesting, maybe I will try it your way, seems easier.
I still don't understand SSH and Shell and Telnet and and Keys and all that.
I noticed SSH and Telnet don't give you the option to Add 'drop table' either. Does your cron? If not then the only way to check off that box is to do it in phpadmin and export from php admin.
And last dumb question: why are there so many options? Why do we need to use Putty? Why can't we just use the Telnet or SSH in CPANEL 2 Accelerated?
I get that Shell Telnet and SSH are better (even though I don't really understand), because there are no timeouts, and maybe that's why vBulletin got rid of backups through vBulletin control panel.

Yes this adds a Drop Table command to backups.
The rest of your questions have no relevance to this modification.

My board crashed about a month ago, and I was using this hack and had some backups made that the mod created, the forum restore never could use them to restore, as it could not read them, so I had to rely on my manual backups of the sql that I was doing...I am glad I did not put 100% faith in this...not saying it does not work, it just did not restore for me when I tried...so I do not know how many of you have actually used this backup to restore, as most users just backup, and never have to restore...dont be lazy, never hurts to keep manual backups as well.

The only clue that I can give you is when I tried to restore your backup, everything
was disorted, everything was out of place...I tried 3 different backups that
your mod created, same result, I restored my manual backup, everything was fine.

this is of pretty big concern, would you provide Paul a copy of your backup to look at to see what the differences are?
Or I could if we don't hear back or onehost doesn't want to...

Any idea why this makes my server become unresponsive?
Whenever it runs a loooooot of new mysql process gets created and the same happens with apache..
Is there some way to limit the script to not use all system resources or something.. cause it's really annoying :(
(But anyway I love the script as it's reaaaaaaaly useful!)

Paul,
I have been using this hack for last 6 months.
I have database corruption. I am trying to restore from the backup created yesterday.
I have database connection error. I am not sure how I should fix it.
The only recent backups I have are taken using this hack. All other backups are more than 6 months old. I have a busy forum with more than 30,000 members.
Please suggest a solution ?
Paul M
10-25-2010, 10:15 AM
A solution to what exactly ?
What do you mean by "database corruption" ?
Also, I cannot tell you how to fix mysql conection errors on your server, you need to speak to your host. That is a server/mysql issue, not a vbulletin or database problem.

Paul,
For a moment I was wondering if there was a problem with this hack. Sorry about it.
Everything is fine. Couple of tables got corrupted. I don't know how.
So the last backup was not good. Backup taken a day before was good.
Thanks for your hack. Backup created by your hack was good and we used that restore everything.

Paul,
I recently received an e-mail from my host telling me that I can not use the database for storing files. The files they pointed out to me were some database backups that had been done a while ago, which is fine because I want to replace them every week. What date format should I use so that every week I have a new set of backups replacing the old ones? Would 'D' work?

Hi guys, newbie question
I've installed and run this mod at my test forum. Everything goes well till I do the restore over FTP.
After backup, I test with posting new thread in the forum and then I go to FTP restore my backup. Restore only restore the data of couple days ago (which makes sense to me) and all of sudden the mod I've installed in ACP also gone too.
What happen guys?
By the way, I'm using godaddy hosting and when I select file to restore it only has 1 file is: system.(mydomain)test.sql
Am I doing this right guys?
Thanks...

Installed plugin and I get this error:
Backup Error : Could not write to destination file ( ../../backups/2010-12-17/Forum-2010-12-17-Access.sql )
Previous version worked fine. Our server has just been changed. Could this possibly be the reason for this in any way. They tell me that I have all rights to the forum folder though.
We are using vBulletin 4.0.3
EDIT:
OK working. I had the path wrong.

I've looked in the cronbackup.php file, but don't see an obvious fix - i'm not good enough to make it work if it's not obvious - any help is appreciated.
Thats because the error isnt being generated by cronbackup.php. :)
What its actually saying is that cronadmin.php (the admin panel code for scheduled tasks) cannot see the file.
Are you sure that cronbackup.php still exists in the /includes/cron/ folder on your server - because that error is basically saying it doesnt !

That depends on the format you use for the timestamp (which names the files).

cronbackup.php?

My backups were bigger than 3GB, but, i moved the attachments to file system. Last backup is about 950Mbs but incomplete!
I cant answer questions on individual servers as I have no access to them - most likely your host has set php timeouts you cannot override.
Paul,
I've been running this for a long time on one site I admin without a problem (vb 4.06), I just installed it on another site (vb 4.08) and when I attempt to save the settings from AdminCP-> Settions->Options, I get the following error:
You don't have permission to access /forum/admincp/options.php on this server.
It's only when I try and save the setting with this mod in view though. If I select another mod specifically, it'll save fine. If I select this one specifically (or the full list of settings options), I get this error. Any suggestions on what to do?
Thanks!

Thats a server issue, probably something like mod security. You need to speak to your host.

Hi Paul...
I have read every post and tried every combo of paths known to mankind.... but I cannot get it to work. I have our forums in public_html on a dedicated server with gzip. I have a backups folder with 777 permissions in the same home directory as the public_html folder... and have verified and reuploaded the cronbackup.php to the /includes/cron/ folder. I still get an error... here is the latest path I set... (assuming I need the same path in the Options setting and in the Scheduled Tasks setting)...

That means the folder you are trying to write to either doesnt exist, or doesnt have the right permissions (or your webserver doesnt have permission to write to it).

Hi Paul,
Just a quick question. Been reading the post over at vb.com about vb4.1.2 and it seems they have removed the file "includes/adminfunctions_backup.php" is this likely to cause any problems when one installs 4.1.2 and deletes? this file?

After reading a few pages of posts, I recommend setting the default installation path to ././backups and adding instructions to create that directory and CHMOD it 777.
That will ease things up a bit for those who are less technically inclined.
Excellent mod. One suggestion: Allow a config option for deleting old files that are 'X backups old'. This would allow for limitation of disk space usage.

Thanks, Paul!! I couldn't SSH into the server today (my dev install which I haven't used for ages), so this mod came in handy! After I figured out where to run it manually, worked like a charm.
One thing though... The first time I ran it I had it set to backup individual tables, but I then set it to single-file backup. I'm looking in the directory and don't see a single-file that I can identify as the complete backup.
Am I missing something? (I re-ran it manually, so is there a chance that since nothing was really changed since the piece-meal backup, it didn't bother running again?)
Thx.

I was looking in the same backup folder that I found the individual backup files (before I configured it to backup to a single file). I don't see the new single-file backup, only the multiple smaller files from my first backup job.
Apart from the configurable prefix, what should the single-file backup be named? <prefix>-date.sql?

Im not sure you are looking in the correct place - single files will go in the root of the configured backup folder - multiple file backups create an extra folder that single file backups dont.

Ah, maybe I configured it incorrectly. All the single files went into the /backups directory specified in on the admincp config page. I'll double check when I get back in there.

Wow. I upgrade, run this... and my dbase is now more than twice the size it was before the upgrade. Whooooo. That's large.
This is one of the hacks that I refuse to upgrade until I see it... Thanks Paul.
Excellent mod Paul. Works flawlessly. Is there anyway to make the mod so I can delete backup files after say 5 backups? So there are never more than 5 at a given time. If not, that's fine, I'll just log in from time to time and delete them. Thanks again!!
You can simply change the date format of the files (in the settings), and make use of the fact that this will replace (delete) any existing file(s) with the same name. On my live site I use the l (lowercase L), which means my files use the day of the week (Monday, Tuesday etc) - so I only ever have 7 backups.
Nevermind my question. Searched through and found this. Exactly what I needed. You da man!

would it be too much trouble to add a second file format option to this mod?
I want to do daily table backups, one file for each table, as well as a weekly full database backup to a single file.
At the moment, every sunday I just switch the settings to produce one file, manually run the cron, and change it back. Just thought I'd see if I could get a more automated process added into it.

You can just ignore it. Its only the logging of the cron run after backup completion.
I would guess your mysql timeout is quite small and its timing out before the log command can be run (are you using the gzip option ?).
Stefan118
05-02-2011, 12:07 PM
Ok, thank you.
Yes, I do use that, because the database is about 1.5 Gb. (350Mb with gzip)

There is generally more involved than just the folder settings (which themselves are fine). Things like open_basdir can restrict what areas apache can write too. Its also not possible from your post to see where the folder is in relation to your vb installation. Like I said, most peoples set-ups are slightly different.

Read back a few posts - your mysql timeout is low, so the connection is timing out, probably because you are gzipping the file.

so do I have to rebuild Gzip again?
or whether the database could still be in use ( can be dump )? because there is an error log?

I think the easiest solution is to up the mysql connection timeout...

Thats the only solution, other than not using the gzip option of course.
Just to be clear, its not affecting the backups, just the final logging that it worked ok.

so it said fine for download then for dump again ?

Hi, thanks for the excellent product.
In my case, I had normal backups in last server, vb4.0.6. Now new server, vb 4.1. Manual backups work, but the file is not created.
So I get no error messages, but also no backup file on my directory. Permission is 777, and I get no permission error message.
Any ideas?

You change the permissions on your chosen backup folder to 777.
Thanks so much for this mod, it's unbelievably helpful. I got it working without any problems and I'm not great at this.
I only have one question, isn't setting the permissions to 777 just asking for your database to be accessible to anyone especially if you have your backup folder called something obvious like "backupfolder" or similar?
Update:
I changed my backup folder name to something not guessable, but also changed my permissions to 733, ran the backup and it worked fine. After changing the permissions I navigated to forum/*backupfile name* and got a 403 error (which is fine) but the backup is on the server.

AFAIK you can change permission backup name to 644 :D

Hi Paul, how are you doing?
Mod is working, but not the gzip part.
My server support guy tested the command and it works.
So when I run the cron job I get this
Processed Database in 235.783 seconds
[Compressing Combined File] : Processed File Compression in 0.022 seconds
Backup Completed Successfully
But the backup folder has only the sql files, no gzip.
Any idea? Thanks
Paul M
06-07-2011, 06:49 PM
Sorry, but the issue is server related.
The time of 0.022 seconds suggests the command is failing pretty much instantly. I'd guess at maybe permissions, but Im afraid there is no real way for me to know.

Where does it store the db by default (../../backups/ ) ?
edit it with ../backups/ if you forum is in www.yourdomain.com/forum or backups/ if your forum is in www.yourdomain.com/
If your option is (../../backups/ ), your data base backup will store in /backups, out of public_html folder.
Create an empty file called index.html in backups folder.

Yes, the step where you create your backup folder, give it the correct permissions, and point the system to it in the settings. :)

Thank you for this mod! It's great, but it's missing a must have feature: auto-delete older backups. I just realised i forgot about the /backups folder, and when i looked inside, a month of backups took over 20GB of space!!!
Is it possible to add an option to autodelete files older than... x days? Or just keep x days files. It would save us a lot of time & space! Thanks in advance!

I did something different with this. I set my path as /home/accountname/.htbackups/
Reason for the ht prefix is in Apache that folder is hidden.
I also don't have to play around with ../../ etc to get it right.
edit it with ../backups/ if you forum is in www.yourdomain.com/forum or backups/ if your forum is in www.yourdomain.com/
If your option is (../../backups/ ), your data base backup will store in /backups, out of public_html folder.

Very nice mod! Thanks!
Got it working after some research. It did not properly copy the mysqlbackup.php file to the includes folder :( But after forcing it to do so, it worked out fine!
Should be nice to administer and set the option to just keep a chosen amount of backups and automatically get rid of obsolete ones, to save serverspace.

In Control Panel - Settings - Options - vBulletin Automatic Backup - you have an option to tick for GZip Files. Unfortunatelly, for me it doesn't work anymore...

Then you have a server issue. Speak to your host.
It's a dedicated server... so i can't talk to my host. I've checked the logs, and i see no errors. Nothing changed since last time Automatic Backup worked. Plus, i do my daily backups using .tar .gz and they work... so gzip is definatelly working.
Or maybe you can tell me where/what to look for that Automatic Backups depends on... Thanks!
Paul M
07-09-2011, 02:35 PM
It simply issues a gzip command on the file, so all it depends on is the server doing what it is asked.

No, that's for the prefix.
If you want to enable gzip compression, check this:
AdminCP > Settings > Options > vBulletin Automatic Backup - GZip Files
Make sure that option is set to "Yes"

To do an automated remote backup is a little beyond the scope of this script I think. That would require third-party server software (e.g. rsync); if memory serves, you need a set of passwordless ssh keys on both ends so the servers can connect automatically. rsync was really designed for backing up tape drives though, not 1 or 2 files. Cpanel has its own automated remote backup function which works over ftp, but it will only back up user accounts. Most web hosting plans offer some kind of automated backup service.

My sql database is five gigabytes.
It appears that this mod can not support large databases.
This times out when ran manually (even if configured to do just 1,000 records at a time), it also fails when ran automatically via cron.
