Cache currently online users number

Hello,

Is there any way or an exiting hack to cache the number of currently online users in the what's going on box, and display the cached number instead of running the count query over and over again?
This count query seems to take and lot of time on big forums.

A quick query to count the number of rows should not take long. You could use datastore if you want (search in the articles) and then do the count only every 5 minutes (or 10, or whatever), but I don't think it will make much difference on your forum.
