Mod of the month winner October 2009.... That cant be bad :up:

Apologies in advance, this is a copy of the 3.6/3.7/3.8 mod that has been verified to work in 4.0 (its so that I dont get a billion PMs asking if it works in 4.0)

This provides access to a RBL type system for forum admins, listing known spam IP / email / usernames. The RBL database is provided by www.stopforumspam.com. You do NOT need an API key from the website in order to access the database. only to submit data if you should wish to do so.

At the point of user registration, the mod checks if the IP number / provided username / email addresses appear on a block list and can block the registration.

Whilst this isnt the most perfect way to stop all forum spam, its another step that spammers have to overcome.

What it does

It checks with a remote database of known forum spammers. Their IP number, email address and forum username are tested and based on your configuration, you can reject / log / accept user registrations based on what you get back.

This version doesnt have
- whitelisting or the ability to submit users to the database but it will within the next week.
- automatic user deletion / post / PM purging. There are good tools out there already, this does something else.

Instructions are included in the installation.txt file - PLEASE read it first and dont forget to actually upload the files in the upload folder, otherwise it WILL kill your registration progress and you wont see the log file options in admincp.

Changes to vB
- 3 new database tables
- 2 database table alternations
- No new templates.
- 2 Hook (register_addmember_process & register_addmember_complete)

Ive tested it but had feedback that it works with versions as old as 3.6.2... Support should go back to older versions, as long as they have hook support for register_addmember_process / register_addmember_complete

Installers should remember to refresh their ACP navigation window when they first install it so they can see the new log file menu item.

REQUIRES MySQL 4.1.1+

There is a small mod, coded by Wired1 that will allow you to submit spammer details to the database from the admin control panel, here https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1650801&postcount=289 This relies 100% on javascript being enabled and makes no tests that it is enabled.

You need to have an API key from www.stopforumspam.com in order to submit data, its free and easy to get... You DONT need an API key in order to use this mod however, only to submit spammer data.

Issues are
- The usergroup permissions / view details etc DONT work. I jumped the gun and put the permissions controls in there before I put the code in. Please delete the includes/xml/bitfield_vbstopforumspam.xml file and rebuild your postbit

- Follow the instructions in the zip file, that includes the file upload the correct folders.

One question.. is anyone getting valid usernames and/or email addresses in their log?

My log looks strange, but it is possible that they were using "Unregistered" and "EMAIL"...but strange that it is on ALL of the items in the log.

Yeah, I get that too. But every one of them traces IP back to RIPE, which is always some stupid spammer or troll in my case.

Do you know why? Was it their usernames? their email address? their IP address?

If it was just the username, then I suggest disabling that check on your install.

If it was the other 2, they might want to check why they are in the Stop Forum Spam database.

If all of your trusted friends have now joined, you can also turn it back on as it only checks during registration.

I had the previous (3.x) version installed before upgrading but I did uninstall it.

It seems to be working better now, but still has some issues.

As I dont run a forum anymore, I would have to put one up and wait for them to try to register on mine. In the mean time, Ill try to see if vBulletin is inserting text into empty fields, when they shouldnt be

I was curious when I wasn't getting any new users registered for the past few days, when a user e-mailed us and told us that he could not register, as after ticking the checkbox to agree to the terms and conditions and submitting the form, he immediately got a blank page.

I started disabling my plugins one by one until I found out that this plugin is the cause. After enabling it, sure enough, the same problem surfaced.

Any ideas?

I installed this and got to the part of importing the XML in admin. I got some sort of error (forgot now but something about invalid file)

So I tried going back to our forum and its completely gone.

I tried going back to Admin - gone. So I deleted to two folders which I had just uploaded (admincp & includes) forum is still gone.

Please help with this and tell me its an easy fix

Working on my 4.0.1 site. I just tested it too by going to stopforumspam.com and using the username and e-mail address of the most recent spammer in their database. When I clicked to register, it checked against the database and denied my registration. :) Works perfectly!

Do you really have that many people that need to be whitelisted?

Other than Name matches, I can't see how many registrations that would be on the IP or email lists. (I disabled Name checks.)

For being able to submit, I have my site send me an email on every successful registration. In that email, I have modified it to generate a link that I can submit a spammer. If they get thru (such as being a new spammer) I can just click the link in the email and it is submitted.

Yeah, I would like it within the plugin, but considering that I have had only 2 false positives I would rather have caught the thousands of attempts. (Even the false positives were debatable.. as it seemed the people had malware infestations and were showing up in other places as spammers as well.)

In newuser email, add the following:

Is this only blocking people who are trying to register or people who are browsing the site?

Since installing this on 1/18, I have 254 log entries for vbStopForumSpam... I do not get that many registrations per day - 3 or 4 is considered a "busy day" for registrations. Why is it that all of these spammers that are now being blocked were not successfully registering before this was installed? The only "captcha" that I have is a question: "What model did Chevrolet build? Camaro or Firebird?" It's not like it's hard for a human to answer that and I seriously doubt that the single question was blocking THAT MANY spammers or was it?

Just shocked at the logs. I'm almost wondering if installing this has made it that more enticing to the spammers or something.

It could be that they were not trying to get thru an actively register.

I had a lot of registration "attempts" that were not completed where they were running scripts trying out different things but making sure that they didn't actually register.

From what I understand this mod catches them during any attempt, even those ones that try to capture all the questions of some sites or try different things to help build their script.

On the plus side, I logged into the stopspam website and checked a few IPs from known spammers that I have and they were all listed. So that's good news. =)

I'd also recommend everyone get an API key so you can submit spammers as well. The more people on board, the better the system is.

- This is what happens when your webserver cant connect to our server for some reason, either DNS failure (and I see a LOT of hosts with bad DNS configurations), our server being down, network issues, any reasons really.

The server itself is hosted at dzone.com now. they have a massive infrastructure to support the server and its up a lot.

The base of this mod is check their list and spammer will only be blocked if listed there.
That's the reason they ask to feed their list with new spammers by forums admins.

I had numerous [REMOTEERR] errors but that was from stopforumspam.com downtime. Once they got back up everything is running great.

GoDaddy, completed deleted our DNS settings, taking everything down with them.

For me and my boards that reason is a moot point. We are still young and growing. To have legitimate registrations rejected for any reason is unacceptable. If I had 5k members than maybe I would feel other wise.

This Feaux pas, rejected 5 new legitimate members. It is scrubbed for me. I would rather delete spammers than have good members rejected.

PS. If you knew GoDaddy is crap, you should have left them.

vb4newb, check your settings. Do you have "Connection Query Errors" set to "Allow" or "Block" ? If you scroll down in the Admin CP navigation and click "Statistics & Logs" and then click the vbStopForumSpam log, you'll see why it's blocking their registrations... if it says anything about connection error or any error messages, then it's denying the registration because of the "Connection Query Errors" setting.

Something has changed since vb3. The Spammer uses Tools which automatically fill out all the fields on the website. But so far I can see, the Tools doesn't find the username field now. If you submit a test registration without the username, you will get also an UNREGISTERED in the Logfile.

So imho we can't do anything, because the spammer doesn't submit a username, so nothing to display in the Logfile...

At present, it seems the name search is not on exact match - at least, if I enter a name as a manual search it's not (e.g., dan will be flagged as matches to daniel, dan123, rodan, etc.).

It should either be eliminated as a potential criterion or made so that only exact matches will work to ban a registration, as it is for email addresses and IP addresses.

This script doesn't use a "search" it checks for a yes or no.

For example, dan would show up as a yes via this page:

The point is how "dan" is checked - and against what. Would you get a "yes" if the member was dan because it matched with daniel, dan2010,123dan, etc.?

My hypothetical member "dan" isn't any of those 500 listed but seems to be considered a match. It should not return a "yes" unless it finds a "dan" in the spam list, not a "jordan" or anything else.

@Claygp: Have you verified that their IP/Email/Username are in fact part of the SFS database? Have you reported the "Legit People" to SFS so they can be investigated and potentially removed from the dB?

As I've seen the "I have to disable this mod" statement a few times in the last few weeks, it is probably worth reiterating that you do not have to block users that are caught by SFS. Instead have those users put into a more restrictive usergroup which either has their posts validated via Akismet or has it's posts manually validated by your site moderators. You can then set an automatic promotion strategy (based on time, # posts, etc) to move them to a less restrictive usergroup.

This gives you the best of both worlds... even in the rare case there is a false positive, your users can still register and post, while at the same time having peace of mind that content is being vetted before it is being presented to your users.

It sounds like you missed something in the installation or in setting up the options.

If you want to be able to check for spam and optionally prevent or approve registration manually, see https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=224073 - it manually queries the same stopforumspam database. You will need to set your forum to require manual approval of all registrations for that to work.

That's not from this mod. That's likely from the vBulletin antispam feature using Akismet.

See Admin CP | Settings | Spam Management.

Akismet works well for vBulletin and Wordpress - except that you can't see what is triggering it, only that it's triggered. Look for commonalities in the moderated posts. Sometimes I can tell what's triggering it (i.e., obvious common spam words like Nokia or ringtone); sometimes I can't see anything.

Do you have any other spam censor mods installed? If so, you can try disabling them, or you can disable scanning in the Spam Management setting if you trust your forum members. :eek:

Attached is the vB4 version.... :)

After upgrading my vB 3.x sites to vB 3.8.5 it meant, of course, that I lost the manual edits to submit the user to StopForumSpam.com from directly in the ACP.

So... I came up with a very quick & very dirty plugin to add an option in the postbit. That way if a spammer does make it through and posts something, I can view the post, click on their name in the postbit, hit the 'Submit' button from the drop-down list (which then takes my browser window to the StopForumSpam.com site and shows me the result of submitting the info), hit the browser 'Back' button, and then continue BAU on cleaning up the spam.

Only Super Mods & above should be able to see the 'Submit' button but, for your own sanity, test it out on your site. ;)

Attached is the plugin XML and a screen shot of how it'll look. Notice this is a plugin and not a product! That means you import via ACP => Plugins & Products => Download/Upload Plugins and *not* through the Manage Products screen.

Yes, it's quick & dirty but it serves my purposes.

The Unregistered displays when the username field is left blank when the form is sent. The REMOTERR dislays when the email field is left blank. For some reason these started showing up in vB 4.0.

My workaround: to check for a blank username and email fields and if either are empty bypass the stopforumspam check, as vB will send the user back to complete these fields anyways. Just a work-around, I tested it and it seemed to work correctly.

Go to plugins and open the vbstopformspam plugin for register_addmember_process. Select edit, and highlight the code. Paste this over it:

The mod worked perfectly. The rejected attempts where rejected because the email was on the database. The IP address was not blacklisted. So when they got a clean email address they got through.

I think the key is in this part:

If I'm not mistaken, that's telling you you were unable to connect to the database. I assume you have it set to approve if that happens, which is what I'd recommend. If you prefer, you could set it in options to NOT approve if you can't connect to the database.

The Unregistered displays when the username field is left blank when the form is sent. The REMOTERR dislays when the email field is left blank. For some reason these started showing up in vB 4.0.

My workaround: to check for a blank username and email fields and if either are empty bypass the stopforumspam check, as vB will send the user back to complete these fields anyways. Just a work-around, I tested it and it seemed to work correctly.

Go to plugins and open the vbstopformspam plugin for register_addmember_process. Select edit, and highlight the code. Paste this over it:

I finally got it installed, and I have seen a vast improvement. I would check my forum every morning and have 3-5 spams to deal with. I have not gotten any since installing this.

However, I have also previously blocked on my own many IP ranges from various servers is China, Ukraine, etc. I have a very long list of blocked IP addresses in the User Banning field. But I started getting spams from IPs in U.S. and I can't block all of a range of comcast or something. So maybe this one is keeping those out for me and not doing so well on overseas ones for you?

It's not really weird at all. The add-on depends on a database of spam reports from other forums. If kfrosty's forum appeals to a small circumscribed geographical forum, it is probable that many of the spammers s/he is attracting are not in the more general spam database. Remember that NOT being in the database doesn't guarantee that the new registrant is not a spammer.

I don't think this add-on is really designed for such a forum. You are probably further ahead using other options for minimizing spam, including:


requiring admin moderation of all new registrations
using the built-in Akismet antispam feature to route posts with certain keywords to the moderation queue
using Valter's add-on to prohibit live links for new members below a certain number of posts
using banning by IP address for those who slip through

In case anyone is still having this problem I have a bit of code that will prevent quite a few invalid submission problems. Lore Master made a great contribution with his code suggestion but it needs to go one step further to deal with all the strange things being submitted to the Stop Forum Spam database. For instance, it isn't overly helpful to the community for a slew of 'Unregistered' submissions to be posted on the website. They are invalid and never should have been submitted.

To stop this from happening we need to do more than check for empty username and email fields. So instead we need to let vBulletin handle the invalid form data and only run the vbStopForumSpam check if a valid registration is submitted. The forum software checks to make sure all the required fields are filled in, that the email address submitted is valid, and various other things, so we don't need to repeat work that has already been done.

To accomplish this input the following code into the 'register_addmember_process' hook for the vbStopForumSpam plugin and replace what is already there.

Finally, this helps to reduce any accidental blocking of legitimate users from registering on your site, either locally or through being mistakenly added to the Stop Forum Spam database, which lists email as well as IP addresses. Remember that virtually none of the people added by mistake will know to come to the Stop Forum Spam website to get their information removed so they can register on a forum they want to join.

This is a great mod, I've really relied on it for a long time. Unfortunately as others have posted, it doesn't work in vB4 when users try to register with their Facebook account. They are rejected as spammers and the logs as to why are empty.

We have a plugin that does the same functions as this plugin available on our site right now.

Its been modified a bit to work with vB4 and facebook as well as other enhancements.

If you want to give it a week we have version 1.0.3 which we will be posting on vbulletin.org that has some additional functionality including Akismet integration, and auto submission to both SFS and Akismet services, and automatic moderation based on certain admin-defined criteria.

We are running the newer version now on our live site, and it seems to be working fine.

Version 1.01 and 1.02 were internal releases that were not stable.

Version 1.0.0 and version 1.0.3 are the stable versions. I will update this thread when v 1.0.3 is released in the next week.

this isn't working correctly it's denying innocent people as well, i get 200 - 500 registrations per day i receive about 20 = 30 emails per day from people that have been denied registration, i tried to re-register my self and it denied me, 4 times out or 5 on the same ip address....

True it does stop the spam bots but it you also lose some members because it denies them when it shouldn't

I'm not taqlking about the facebook loggins either i don;t have that enabled on my forums

This really is the best spam stopper for users, but it is still blocking legit users ie: aol etc.

Is there anyway you can add a whitelist for IP's that users send me? I'm in a tough situation in that I need to be able to allow access to legit subscribers.

Just an fyi...

I recently update the stopforumspam.com website. some one has reported that this broke the postbit reporting. It hasnt but when you submit, there is no page or response. The data goes into the database just fine and Im working on a method to report this back without breaking anything else.


On a side note, is there a way to move the submit to stopforumspam section in the admincp to the top of the row rather than the bottom?

I've had a huge issue with this plugin. We launched a new site last week and it was running great before. However, when we started to get people coming to visit, after an hour I was getting constant emails to tell me that:

What the plugin was doing was causing too many consecutive queries through the database at one time. As soon as I disabled the plugin, it was fine again.

My host allows for 15 simultaneous queries at one time to the database.

Recently this plug-in started seeing anyone as a spammer... :S
Is there some problem with plug-in or what?
I mean even I can't register on my own forum... O.o

I am misunderstanding something about the install process.
I unzip the package and get the upload, the xml and the install.
The install says to upload the upload "contents" to the root of the forum.

Does this mean that I should upload the file from the admincp and the file from the includes into the forum folder OR should I move the file from upload > admincp to the forum > admincp and upload > includes to the forum > includes.

If I upload the admincp and the includes on top of the ones already in the forum, won't that destroy the forum.

Like I say, i'm just confused.

I think that I am confused about what is root. Is that like this:

public_html > forum

public_html > admincp (from upload)

public_html > includes (from upload)

If it is, that would answer the question.

Found a bug when sorting the logs by ip address:

Invalid SQL:

SELECT * FROM vbstopforumspam_log AS logs

ORDER BY ip ASC, date DESC
LIMIT 0, 15;

MySQL Error : Unknown column 'ip' in 'order clause'

Here's the fix:

Inside /admincp/vbstopforumspam.php:

Find:

After upgrading my vB 3.x sites to vB 3.8.5 it meant, of course, that I lost the manual edits to submit the user to StopForumSpam.com from directly in the ACP.

So... I came up with a very quick & very dirty plugin to add an option in the postbit. That way if a spammer does make it through and posts something, I can view the post, click on their name in the postbit, hit the 'Submit' button from the drop-down list (which then takes my browser window to the StopForumSpam.com site and shows me the result of submitting the info), hit the browser 'Back' button, and then continue BAU on cleaning up the spam.

Only Super Mods & above should be able to see the 'Submit' button but, for your own sanity, test it out on your site. ;)

Attached is the plugin XML and a screen shot of how it'll look. Notice this is a plugin and not a product! That means you import via ACP => Plugins & Products => Download/Upload Plugins and *not* through the Manage Products screen.

That works fine but only if the spammer has made a post. It doesn't show up in user profiles of sig spammers etc.

Anyway to make it show up in their profile?

I had your mod on my 3.8 installation running great for the last year.
Over the past 2 weeks I've been doing my upgrade to the 4.0.8 release of vB and have been trying to get this mod to work. It is rejecting EVERYBODY, but seems to be doing so because of a communication error.

I initially looked back at my 3.8 install and saw the same error so I thought nothing of it. But tonight I did a test registration myself and got the rejection message.

I then went to your site and checked my test username seen above and of course it is not listed there. So I guess it's simply rejecting based on that REMOTEERR, not the actual username.

I went back to my 3.8 logs and looked deeper and see that the StopForumSpam was working fine up until 11/17/2010 and then every inquiry since then fails with the above error message.

Please respond with some help!!!

The error seems to say it all. Your "Policy" (AKA your Settings) are set to deny registrations when there is a communication error. So, the first problem is that you have a communication error with SFS. To alleviate the problem change your settings to allow registration if communication with stopforumspam.com cannot be completed. In the meantime, ask yourself why it is that you cannot longer communicate with SFS.

You might check out the GlowHost Spam-O-Matic mod which is supported. The StopForumSpam website shows that this mod is no longer maintained;

Update:
First, thanks GlowHost for your input and response to my issue.

I'm posting my findings for anyone else who may come across this issue looking for answers.

I was up past 3am friday working on that issue. I was definitely aware of the policy which you mention, but to me, I felt like why do a spammer check if I was going to allow registration anyway. The issue for me was to figure out why it was erroring. It apparently wasn't that the SFS service was down.

Finally on Saturday I tested the CURL module and found that CURL had been disabled by my host ( but retained the ability to turn it back on) So I found where to do that and re-enabled it. Bingo! It works now.

So here's my issue with the plug-in (not really an issue, just something of note), if the code uses CURL, it should do a check to see if the CURL code is available and issue a LOG entry saying so. I'm a .NET developer and this is standard practice to log any kind of issue with remote calls.

At any rate, all seems to be well and it is properly turning away spammers once again.

I had installed Spam-O-Matic as well, but disabled because of the same REMOTEERR issue. So I may actually go and try it again because it has those extra features for submitting spammers via the admincp module.

Also looking for this. Have spent over an hour reading forum posts trying to find a valid link to something that shows how. Frustrating. The software works brilliantly so having this last bit of information somehow hidden is sad.

Couple hours short of 24, this has stopped over 400 in their tracks. Couldn't be more pleased! Here's a minor modification I recommend that helps the daily ritual of approving users and involves a minor edit to the user.php file. This is for those requiring the user to validate their email and then the admin manually approving:

We're running this on 4.1.0 PL2: line 1754 in user.php (may vary slightly in different versions), replace their mailto link and the following line that tells the IP (never figured out why we'd want to mail someone from the final approval process) and their not very useful IP check and instead point those to Google so you can see where those email addresses appear, and the IP to a decent WhoIs lookup. Most of my spam registrations come from Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia, India and my site is topical for something not practice there so this makes it super easy.

Yes that site is a little slow but i bet that site get's allot of traffic if i could talk to the owner of stopforumspam.com i would ask him/her if i could help in mirroring it's content i'm on a dedicated server i have gigabytes of space left offcource since it's a spammers blacklist i think the site is often the "target" of online attacks like (D)dos or similar please correct me if i'm wrong.I would provide a mirror for free just to join the fight against the spammers :D

Ive seen alot of increases in emails of which genuine users are complaining they can not sign up, this has been the case for some time however ive always just replied to their emails asking them to sign up with a different username and that seemed to work.

However recently i was working on a clients website and he had it installed , he said that he gets around 4 complaints per day all from genuine users, so i thought i would run a little experiment and disable it on a couple of boards for a couple of days, in those days ive seen much better conversions and a much higher posting rate from new members, Also those members have returned and are becoming very good posters. Also the time on the site for each person is much higher .

Spam has not been an issue since disabling this mod , i run the mod "bad Behaviour" and also "VSA advanced permissions based on Post count" basically meaning they can not post links , images and email addresses until they have 20 posts. With these two alone i have had zero spam.

I thought i would write this quickly as ive always loved this mod but there is seriously something wrong when it blocks SO MANY potential members
