Ever since I made the switch to 4.0 I have been getting a ton of spam bots registering. I was using NoSpam! on vb3.8 and it worked wonderfully, but it is not compatible with 4.0 and now I am receiving a dozen spam bots a day.

I set it so that I have to approve new members, but I've noticed it still shows them on the Members Lists and just simply keeps them from posting. I don't even get an email to approve them until they have confirmed their email address. I really don't want some of the X-Rated names showing up on my family friendly board.

What can I do to prevent bots from even getting past the registering stage?

install this hack to prevent registrations that happen in under a set time:

You may need to edit the <dependancies> part of the .xml file to make it work on vb4.

vbstopforumspam is available for vb4. Hopefully these mods will be updated:
Check4SPAM - Advanced SPAM Search & Destroy! (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=173490&highlight=CHECK4SPAM)

Is Bot: Registration Time Check (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=135094&highlight=isbot)

These mods work like a charm together.

vbStopForumSpam is a good way to keep a lot of them out to begin with. One of my sites gets a TON of attempts a day that are blocked by it.

As far as not showing up on the member list, I suggest the following setting in the AdminCP.

User Listing Options => Minimum Posts = 1

This will at least keep them out of the member list until they can post a message.

They will still show up in teh "Welcome to our newest member," section, but then there will only be the latest registered member.

I also blocked viewing of the member list to registered, logged in members only.
