View Full Version : Board Optimization - How to reduce space in postbit
To reduce the space between the message area and the signature space go in:
Admin CP -> Style & Templates -> Style Manager -> CSS Templates -> Postbit.css
Find:
/*post bit*/
Add under it:
.postbitlegacy .after_content {
clear:right !important;
}
Save.
Finish

Is there any way to get the bottom of the sig to line up with the end of the left column in legacy postbit instead of just being spaced down a bit from the last text of the post?
Either way this is way better than the HUGE gap in vb4.

Hmm, I tried the code and it didn't change the spacing at all - although the initial spacing was nowhere near as large as what TheWindows7Site posted in his 'before' picture and the spacing is roughly the same as in his 'after' picture so I guess vBulletin fixed it?
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2010/01/107.jpg

That still puts a gap under the signature box on a one line reply or when the userinfo is longer then the postbody.
What I am trying to do here is.
Use the clear:right or none, To clear the space in the userinfo side. Then align the signature box at the bottom where it was before. Thus only clearing the space to the left under the userinfo.

This rocks. Thanks.
My users like to post lots of quotes and pictures in their sigs, odd-shaped avatars, etc. This and using the legacy postbit style makes a huge difference on white-space.
I'm trying to get rid of that dumb "default" document icon... Where? (duh, nevermind - - read the docs - - )
Settings > Options > Thread Display Options (showthread)
And now that I got rid of that icon, there's not enough space so I need to add a few em's... the tweaking never stops. :)
I know this is not directly related to "postbit" but the point for me is to also remove clutter...
For the Show Thread Templates = "SHOWTHREAD" I removed the fugly "largereplybutton" just commenting it out:
<div id="above_postlist" class="above_postlist">
<vb:if condition="$show['']">
//later//
I removed the lower "reply" button and added a "Reply" to the left of the "Reply with Quote" below the post, as well as a "Send PM" in place of the reply with quotes inline - as I had some users really not understand how to send personal messages.
//
I should really pull this whole code - wasted bandwidth.
I really didn't like the "Results x to y of z" because it is mis-aligned and is redundant, so I pulled this code:
{vb:rawphrase showing_results_x_to_y_of_z, {vb:raw pagenumbers.first}, {vb:raw pagenumbers.last}, {vb:raw totalposts}}
I put the thread title in the thread controls bar. Get rid of the div and h1 tags:
<div id="pagetitle" class="pagetitle">
<h1>{vb:rawphrase thread}: <span class="threadtitle"><a href="{vb:raw thread_url}" title="{vb:rawphrase reload_this_page}">{vb:raw threadinfo.title}</a></span></h1>
</div>
It now looks like:
<div id="thread_controls" class="thread_controls">
<div>
{vb:rawphrase thread}: <span class="threadtitle"><a href="{vb:raw thread_url}" title="{vb:rawphrase reload_this_page}">{vb:raw threadinfo.title}</a>
<ul id="postlist_popups" class="postlist_popups popupgroup">
//later//
In FORUMDISPLAY, I went ahead and removed "Threads x of y to z" text and moved the thread page navigation down into the threadlist_controls box. This saves quite a bit of space at the top. You have to increase the size of the threadlist_controls box - but here's what the section looks like:
<vb:if condition="$show['threadslist']">
<div id="above_threadlist_controls" class="above_threadlist_controls">
<vb:if condition="$show['threadslist']">
</vb:if>
<div>{vb:raw pagenav}
<ul class="popupgroup forumdisplaypopups" id="forumdisplaypopups">

Mine said None instead of Both So i left it alone & changed the number in the next set of code below that..
.postbitlegacy .after_content {
position: relative;
width: 100%;
clear:none;
}
.postbitlegacy .signature, .postbitlegacy .lastedited {
margin-top: 1em;
padding: 17em {vb:stylevar padding} 0;
}
I changed the number 17 in "padding" to just 1 & it took away ALL of the gap, so you can just adjust to your liking. :)
(worked in IE9 & Google Chrome)
*edit*
Now that im thinking about it this might have taken the gap out of the sig, not the space above the sig.

AND CHANGED BELOW 4em to 1em to close up the bottom-padding
.postbitlegacy .postrow.has_after_content {

Does this work for 4.2 and are there an screen shots to show a before and after?
S@NL - BlackBik
08-20-2012, 02:17 PM
Yes, it works on vB4.2
Don't have any screen-shots but basicly it does exactly what is said in the first post.
Didn't know this existed, but I have a couple things to add: one is that if you put the code in the additional.css template, it will stay there when you upgrade. Also, you might be able to remove more space by adding this (in additional to the code shown in the first post):
.postbitlegacy .postrow.has_after_content {
padding-bottom: 0px;
}
0px might remove a little too much, but you can increase it if you want.
Edit: oops, didn't notice that we're on page 12 of comments, this has probably been mentioned before.

Sure. The last <td> is just to bottom align things within it.
I just had to play around with margins/padding a bit. ie. my last edit line is still a tad bit high (~14px when it should be closer 10px bottom margin)

I imagine if you orient/setup the divs correctly, it would be just a matter of adding a 'td' class to the bottom div along with a vertical-align:bottom. No doubt there are other ways... I just found a div/table setup easier.
Excellent! I've been waiting for this.

.postbitlegacy .postrow.has_after_content {

Yours will say 4em; change that to 1em and it should work for you.
This is located in the same postbit.css as you changed clear from both to none like this
.postbitlegacy .after_content {
position: relative;
width: 100%;
clear:none;

It affects all posts. However, if the post is a long post as it is, it'll move the signature down accordingly.

Seems this mod only has an effect when the message text height is les that all the "crap" on the left.
In that case: How do I reduce the empty space that is automatically inserted between message text and signature ? Could this mod be of any help or should I look elsewhere ?

OK, I did a lot what people have recommended above, but I still have some extra space I would like to cut out. Any help would be appreciated. Here is a screenshot:
