Community Bulletin:

This mod grabs all the latest information in your forum (posts, threads, events, birthdays, etc) and puts them into a newsletter to be sent to all your members that subscribe.

This mod has been around a long time and gone through many versions. It has been a paid version for a number of years with great success, but it's time to pass on the reigns.

Attempted fix for sending to users that are part of multiple user groups

[installation]
- upload some files
- upload the product.xml
- make 1 mod to the usercp options template
- FULL DETAILS in the README.txt

[note] many people ask why all the images, etc don't show up in the HTML version of what is in your forum. This is because most mail clients strip out the CSS and vbulletin is 99% CSS. I have created an HTML version that is nice and clean, but is forum independent. If you know what you are doing, you can edit this HTML file and build your own newsletter.

Holy crap this is great, kinda pissed I just spent $34 from a newsleter script from a member that sells scripts here and it sucks, nothing like the original community bulletin... I will tag this mod and hear from feedback before I switch over.

For clarification, are you allowing others to modify and distribute this, or are you seeking other coders to take it over and release it?

How much do you need paid to get the cron added back in so we can set it up so the newsletter automatically gets sent out again as we dictate it should be?

This is by far the best newsletter for VB.

SUGGESTIONS:
If you look at the other newsletter that is out for VB.... I suggest adding one feature where we can write up an article in a certain forum that will be called as the main newsletter article. So we can control some design elements of the newsletter and template. Just some ideas for the future of this.

the cron has been removed not because of the complexity, but because too many servers can't handle the load of sending that many emails. Most dedicated servers handle it just fine, but virtual hosted domains don't work so well.

Since we customize each newsletter with information from our other sites, a cron was no longer useful for us, so I never had the big priority to add it in.

As far as development for this, anyone is free to make mods and distribute it. If it's a good one (and tested well, i'll add it in)

And it's not that bad, that the cron shouldn't be used. You should always check your Newsletter for Threads you don't want in it.

i use paul addon for cron e-mail so if ypu add the cron for newsletter it will not affect ther server
i have server and so many people here , make it as option so the user will choose

The fact he has released it here as re-usable code tells me that the author has no time to upgrade it, and has left that task to others.

there are issue with vbseo when you use google analytics , so the mail will be full of this java script of the google analytics

vb4: as we will need to do this when we upgrade all our forums, i will make it compatible when the need arises, if no one beats me to it.

Attachment & html code: i've noticed that this has been happening to us recently, so I will need to look into this myself. it's on my task for this week.

the "show info starting from this date" means that you are searching through the forum data for info starting with that date. I'm not sure what timezone you are in but it's not 2010 yet, so that is why you only see 2009.

yes, if no one beats me to it, than yes. As for a timeline, not sure. There are so many mods that we use on all of our forums that still don't work, so we won't be upgrading anytime soon. Until that becomes a pressing matter for us, I won't be taking a hard look at the requirements to upgrade Commbull .... however, my guess is it won't take much, when the time comes because it is pretty independent from vB

Great product and thanks for making it free. I'm having a problem getting the 'Show info starting from this date' option to work. I set it for Jan 1st 2010 and choose 'yes' for the option below to activate it, yet when I generate my newsletter under 'most replied' threads it shows threads from way back in 2008 which are old but have lots of replies.

Is there a bug?

This is very nice! and with the graphics folder installed it looks pretty good too. Thank you so much for releasing it. :)

Just one question:
Is there anyway to tweak the basic template permanently though? We'd really prefer to have the unsubscribe link under "Forget Your Password?"

Also... something to consider for any future dev.... It's great that we can write up a basic blurb to send to members and I suppose I can tinker with that area and make it look sort of like what I have in mind but it would be really handy if we could also have a separate area or two for newsletter specific articles to keep it more interesting for the regular members. :cool:

yea, you can modify the ./admincp/commbull_*_template* files. Unfortunately, to be able to put together so much information from various sources, I have not found a simple way to do the templates. Make sure you backup the template files before making any changes.

I can find "unsubscribe" easily enough and have been able to move it when tinkering with it while in the Combull area of my boards AdminCP but only temporarily. When I looked at the templates in the download it seems is a bit different and more confusing for me though.

I'm sorry to be a bother... I can just keep changing it before sending. I was just hoping there was an easy fix so I could save myself a bit of work over the long run by making the change permanent. :)

i can definitely understand how this seems daunting. As each section of HTML code gets handled differently, I'm not even sure about how it will work moving the unsubscribe link to other HTML sections. If you search for <a target="_blank" href="{\$dollarchar}commbull_unsubscribe">\$vbphrase[tounsubscribe]</a> in commbull_template_htmlnew.php and then for "forgotten_your_password", you should find where to move the code pieces ... again, i'm not even sure that this will work, so test it first.

yes, i can confirm that it does NOT send to secondary user groups. It has never been in there, from the earliest versions, so I never thought to put it in in later versions. I've never actually used secondary user groups in my forums

Emails will NOT be sent</b><br />'; }, which means that all of vbulletin is set in debug, not just Commbull

I have the previous version, 4.5f, which does run successfully via a cron job, running on 4.01. It required some modification of the installation instructions but it does work. I expect you should be able to get this version running as well, although as the coder noted the cron capability doesn't work.

1. Edit product-Commbull.xml and find the following line:

That first part (above) is the option to receive or not receive the newsletters.

Next would be the option for HTML or plain text emails, which should be:

However, I was unable to get that second option to stick, for reasons which escape me. I could check the box to specify HTML, which is far superior, but the next time I enterd my settings page, it was always unchecked again.

What I did instead was omit that second entry entirely. That means that everyone who gets the newsletter will receive the HTML version (the default option), but frankly on my forum it was extremely rare that anyone did not opt for HTML, since it has live links.

i am not actively able to keep users happy with constant updates and fixes, so it is not fair to continue to charge people for this mod. However, there are things that I will need accomplished for my forums, so will still be required to do work here and there, but if someone beats me to fixes / additions, then who am I to not accept it

FWIW... not all are in the one I DLd. The "Commbull" one seems to have all the images that are needed for the newsletter. I don't know why the others are there if they're all empty but I'm not a developer so I just uploaded the whole kit-n-kaboodle as instructed. :)

I've now customized it a bit so it better reflects my board and am rather pleased with not only how it works and but now how it looks. :cool:

the no name attachment problem was fixed in the last update.

not sure why you would be getting it multiple times to users as it is sending to unique only. I did have a problem with the auto-send to next page. If it's too low, it will submit a blank form and start from the beginning.

I am on the mailing list and what I receive is plain text, no option to turn HTML on like you can on some emails that others send you. Is there an option somewhere that I am missing in the ACP? I made sure in the database that the field for allowing HTML is there and that I have a 1 set.

I just did an upgrade to this latest version and encountered a problem. I tried reimporting it and overwrote all the files and it didn't fix it....:(

I am on the mailing list and what I receive is plain text, no option to turn HTML on like you can on some emails that others send you. Is there an option somewhere that I am missing in the ACP? I made sure in the database that the field for allowing HTML is there and that I have a 1 set.

sry, must have missed your question. yes, there is an option but not in the ACP ... i've never tried to put a setting in there. The option is only in the front under the UCP.

I've been sending the newsletter for several weeks but yesterday I tried to send it again and nothing happened. It seems to work, It says that the emails are sent, but there's nothing in the email inbox.

I've tried reinstalling Commbull and several other tests. I've also tested email function in my Vbulleting and it's working ok ( I do receive other notifications by email and also can send emails by Control Pannel)...

Is there any way to test where the problem is?

check your junk mail. if you have database access and you are using vbulletin's mailqueue, then you can watch the mailqueue table for added emails

I did check my spam, junk email folder. Also I'd try with several kind of emails (hotmail, gmail, yahoo). I do not have the queue enabled... Should I?

I have to tell you the same.
My older version which worked without a problem before always showed me, that the mail would be sent.
After many months of vb updates and other new addons a user asked why there was no commbull for such a long time.
After testing upgrading, downgrading and upgrading again, some user received mails some not.
And after testing of the versions i've got "mail delivery failure" email sent from a commbull sent 5 days ago.

I thougt an addon is causing the problem but you can never know... ;)
Just wanted to mention that.

Normal forum emails are sent as ususal (subscriptions, activation mails and so on...)
I'm still checking!

You know we also have the old commbull running on about 30 forums without a problem. I took the whole installation package from there but it didn't work on the one I'm talking about.

The only addon of which I know was installed last was the mighty google translation addon (VB enterprise translator (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=220886)) from NLP-er.
That's what I can say, but I didn't had the time to inspect every little corner of my board. So at this time I think it's my own fault. ;)

This commercial product has been released here as a free product because the author, grandeur_69, no longer has the time to keep up with the necessary upgrades. The hope, I believe, was that others would pick up the product and extend it for 4.x.

Now in Outlook 2007 I cannot see this image or the thread_title_bg.gif

I have been going through Outllook 2007's configs, nothign I can find. I think it is related to that not sure, so far all the images appear correctly in as stated, Squirrel, Horde and Cube

It has to be 2007, I just tested under my charter account and everything is perfect...

Great product and thanks for making it free. I'm having a problem getting the 'Show info starting from this date' option to work. I set it for Jan 1st 2010 and choose 'yes' for the option below to activate it, yet when I generate my newsletter under 'most replied' threads it shows threads from way back in 2008 which are old but have lots of replies.

strange. the end value for the date is the current year. It's simply a call to date('Y') ... so if it's only showing 2008, maybe the server date is wrong .. I'm not sure why this would be so. What version do you have?

hmm, that's strange. I've never actually moved the directory, but everywhere in the code i see $vbulletin->config['Misc']['admincpdir']. We just upgraded one of our forums to vb4 and the admincp is in another directory, so this week I'll be upgrading the code to vb4 compatibility and i'll be checking the directory stuff ...

However, today is Canada Day and I'm in a big softball tournament, so all this will have to wait till next week ... sorry.

misunderstanding. i didn't mean for you to change the code. Everywhere in MY code, I am using the vbulletin configuration settings to reference the files, so it should work. I'm not sure why it is not working for you, but I don't have time to go through my code to find out. What version of vB are you running?

There is a problem with the phrases in the xml file.

<phrase name="settings" version="5.0"><![CDATA[Settings]]></phrase>

The phrase above, overwrites the existing VB Phrase for settings. This is not really a huge problem, but if you uninstall Commbull, then it removes this phrase, which makes everything else in VB which uses it look funny, and you have to recreate the phrase.

This phrase should be removed from the Commbull xml file, so that this product neither installs nor removes it.



BTW, this is an awesome product, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it in the future.

You're not supposed to change the actual variable. It should be:

$config['Misc']['admincpdir'] = 'admincpforum';

In your ./includes/config.php file or if you're editing this within one of the mod files it should be:

None of my users actually got an email at all. I'm using my host smtp server that lets me send 500 emails an hour...I only have 300 members:) - i.e. assuming this mod uses the same email details as found in admincp-->settings-->options-->email options...or not?

hmmm... squirrelmail works perfectly fine for me. I use it to check my email all the time, and I am able to see these newlestters perfectly. Now you have to remember, that squirrelmail does not view HTML, so an HTML email you have to click on the download as file link to view it.

On the Commbull settings page. Deselect all usergroups except for Administrators, then send a Commbull mail.
of course if you have more than one person in Administrators then they will all get the mail.

No offense intended here but if you're the only admin, then check the obvious:


you have checked the box for "Receive admin emails" in your UserCP
you have checked the box for "Receive CommBull newsletter"
you have saved these settings after checking the boxes
you have a valid email address entered in your UserCP settings


Then check AdminCP | Settings | Email Options:

Scroll down to

SMTP Email

commbull simply uses vbulletin's mail sending function, so the problem is not likely to be from commbull itself.

check 2 things:
- the vbulletin mailqueue table to see if they are being added there
- server maillog to see how they are being handled by your server

Yes: Ignore the first DROP as you've already done that. Run the other two:

Those are three separate SQL statements:

ALTER TABLE user DROP receivebulletin;
That one failed because you already deleted that table.

Try the following two separately. If you get an error like you did above, basically saying the table doesn't exist, don't worry about it - that's just telling you there's nothing to delete.

ALTER TABLE user DROP INDEX receivebulletin;

ALTER TABLE user DROP receivebulletin_type;

When all of those are removed, then you can reinstall the add-on.

Oh, and if you are using a table prefix, that needs to be prepended to the SQL statement:

ALTER TABLE {TABLE-PREFIX}user DROP receivebulletin;
ALTER TABLE {TABLE-PREFIX}user DROP INDEX receivebulletin;

i can only suggest watching vb's mailqueue table and your server logs when sending it out to try and determine where the problem might be. If it's looping through and showing that the mail is being sent out to each user, i'm not sure where the problem might be.

I re-installed the mod on my 4.08 board and created a bulletin - I have been using it for about two years and installed the latest version etc. Sending to admins works fine but when I select 'registered users' for example and activate the send procedure the procedure loops on page 0 of 12 and keeps repeating the first 300 users - it does not advance to the next page. I disabled the mod (if there is any other way to stop this running please advise) in the plugin manager but have already sent out a pile of bulletins repeatedly to this user group.

They each got about 20 copies so I am not very popular!

Has anyone had a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it?

I have over 2,30,000 members. I tried using this mod but the send queue fails / stops abruptly and then I have to hit the back button. Also it conflicts with vbseo in a way and takes jargon code from footer. We have a nehlam dedicated server.

I'm willing to pay but can someone tell me how

a.) I can send an email to all my members without having to watch the queue page update every x seconds and then stop?

b.) Reduce server loads and ensure the bounced emails are not sent again.

I haven't had a problem, but you are over my head with the server knowledge. I have a site with 10,500 members. In the top box of "Settings", I have set it so that only active members in the last 300 days get the newsletter. That really cuts back bounces to uninterested parties.

I found this to a be a problem only when I had the redirect time too low. Seems that the page is reloading and sending to the next page too fast and the page data is being lost.

Your problem is usually related to server load. You probably need to increase the time between pages. This is the biggest problem I've had with this mod in the past, was that sending such big HTML emails really bogs down the server, especially if you have a virus scanner going through every email on sending. Also, the more bounces the server has to handle, the more it bogs down further.

Sending to active users is one solution. Increase the time between sends is another. Dedicated mail server would work, as well. I send to over 100k users every week and it never fails (sending from 4 forums at once, too), but I have a dedicated server.

I have added my own hack using .htaccess and some random image code to track openings. I will probably run some SQL in a month or so to remove users that haven't either opened the email or aren't active (in the last 300 days, for example). That should severely reduce the number of emails being sent.

Of course, another option, if you know someone who has the skills, is to add a bounce-handler.

Honestly, I have never used secondary usergroups since the very early days so I can't confirm or deny this issue. I have a huge deadline coming up in the next couple weeks, but I will see about putting one of my other programmers on it, to determine where the issue might be.

No, unfortunately, this hack was developed way before vb4 (and those features existed) and the hack has only been kept up-to-date. There haven't been any really new features added.

the vbphrase[username] is the actual language value, in case you were working with another language or wanted to change it from "Username" to "User" or something along those lines. $username is what actually displays the users actual name (like grandeur_69)

The cron is disabled. I should not have the file in there. Most servers can not handle the load required to send out the newsletter via cron and I have not found a solution that works.

Quick quesh, in the settings it asks for a 'from' email...so, for e.g. when ppl receive our newsletter the from field is 'webmaster@mysite.com'. How can i have it so it says 'MySite' in the from field instead of simply the email address?

One other issue, when i send out the newsletter, it includes events whose dates have already passed...how do i modify to have it only send upcoming events?

Its not working for me properly for more than half an year now, not sure what happened, we were migrating servers couple of times and it stopped working properly.

I had a problem with this mod where sometimes it wouldn't send out emails or it sent out several to the same user, duplicated emails.
In my case I did two things to solve this:
1 In Vbulletin>admincp>Options>settings>Email Options

Use Mailqueue System set to "Yes, with locking"
This prevents duplicated newsletter from going out and also helps the smooth distribution of those newsletters.

2 SMTP Email set this to yes!
Now fill in the settings for your smtp server and hit save.
Since doing this I'm able to send out newsletters without problems to over 5,000 members.

I've installed this but when trying to access the settings etc. receive the following error:

the error doesn't even make sense. I don't see phrasegroup_commbull in the search query for it to display that error. The product XML file is the one that would include these changes to the database.
