View Full Version : End-User Options - Real Name In Profile And Postbit
Please click Mark as Installed if you are using this hack.
What Does This Hack Do?Silver
This is an update to my 3.8.x version of this hack, designed to work with vBulletin v4.0.x.
A very simple hack to display your real name in your profile and postbit (or postbit legacy), just like here at vBulletin.org.
If no real name is entered, then it will not display in the postbit (or postbit legacy).
DEMO: View it in action here (http://www.wolfshead-solutions.com/threads/63-Happy-New-Year-!!!).
This hack was created because of a request by Hannan here.
Limitation with this hackSilver
People keep asking for usergroup permissions for this hack.
While this would easy to implement, what people fail to realise is that User Profile Fields are not controlled by usergroup permissions at all, and even if usergroup permissions were added to this hack, the User Profile Fields would still be viewable by members even if they do not have permissions to use them.
User Profile Fields are either viewable by all or viewable by none, this is how they were implemented in vBulletin by design, there is no in between with User Profile Fields.
So, I will not be adding usergroup permissions to this hack.
vBulletin Version CompatibilitySilver
This hack can be used with vBulletin versions 4.0.0 - 4.2.0.
For the v3.8.x version of this hack, which will also work with v3.7.x and v3.6.x - check here.
Hack Support/Feature RequestsSilver
IMPORTANT: This hack is no longer supported.
Install/Uninstall InstructionsSilver
The Real Name In Profile And Postbit Installation Instructions 4.0.xxx.pdf instructions file is included in attached .zip (includes visual instructions).
NOTE: If upgrading then just do Step 2 and Step 3 again.

Anyway you could do this without creating a profile field? I know its small potatoes but just trying to get around that. Perfect positioning on the profile tab!!!

1. Just a small issue... In the postbit, it is showing the title as "Real Name", instead of the title of the field as defined (I use "Full name" for example). on the member info page, it shows up correctly.
2. can we have an option to hide the full name from not logged in users?
3. also, wonder if it possible to show the Full name more prominently, esp in the member info page (say just below/instead of the username).
thx

Tested and working fine with vBulletin 4.0.0 Gold.
I will no longer be supporting Alpha, Beta & Release Candidates of vBulletin 4.0.0.
Hi all,
It is with regret that after over 4 years (and thousands of hours) spent providing free support for my free hacks released here, as of today I will no longer be able to provide support for free.
This is due to being unemployed for a while, being strapped for cash and unable to rely on the virtually non-existant donations from here to help to pay the bills or put food on the table for my family. I am now providing all support for my free hacks released here over at Wolfshead Solutions (http://www.wolfshead-solutions.com) via an annual support subscription (for a small fee).
It does not mean I will be no longer release free hacks, I will, I just no longer be supporting them for free.
My free hacks have and always will remain free to download and use. And so will updates/bug fixes.
I will be releasing more free hacks, but if you require any support at all for those free hacks, you will need to purchase an annual support subscription over at Wolfshead Solutions to receive support.
I am really sorry I have to do this, but revenue generated by my programming gigs are now my only source of income, and I can no longer afford the luxury of providing free support here, when that time can be spent creating new commerial products, doing paid work requests or providing paid support to pay the bills.
Thank you for the understanding.
Regards,
Mosh.

It's an easy fix. In the code for the postbit_display_complete hook, just add:
global $vbulletin;
at the very top of the code.

Hey, can you explain to me exactly where? Cuase I am not 100% where to add the "global $vbulletin;" This is the code:

Real Name In Profile and Postbit

<hookname>postbit_display_complete</hookname>
<phpcode>if (!empty($post["field{$vbulletin->options['realname_profile_field']}"]))
{
$template_hook['postbit_userinfo_right_after_posts'] .= '
' . $vbphrase['real_name'] . '

' . $post["field{$vbulletin->options['realname_profile_field']}"] . '
';
}</phpcode>
Do I add it in FRONT of if (!empty($post["field{$vbulletin->options['realname_profile_field']}"])) or AFTER?
Boofo
06-22-2010, 04:05 PM
Replace:
if (!empty($post["field{$vbulletin->options['realname_profile_field']}"]))

global $vbulletin;

Add this ABOVE the code in the postbit_display_complete plugin:
global $vbulletin;
That is not correct; if you have installed the latest version of this hack, you do not need the global $vbulletin statement added, as this hack now accesses the registry object directly and you do not need to globalise anything. It is just likely that the real name field was empty and once it was filled it displayed (that is how it was designed to work).

Hi,
Thanks for this.
I was wondering if it would be possible to create extra user fields and then add them all in the admincp settings separated by a comma or something?
The reason I ask is that I'd like to do something like this (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?54939-Phenom-II-and-1066-Memory-Info.). Your mod is the closest thing I've seen and it almost works, but it really needs multiple fields to pull it off I think?
Can it be done, or do I need to look elsewhere?

Works good too in VB 4.0.8 PL2.
This hack is good but doesn't do exactly what I'm looking for.
I'd like to display the Real Name instead of the user login everytime, not the login and under a line with "Real Name".
Is it possible to do this quite simply ?

Have a think about what your asking ..........
If this was to work as you want it to function then it would rely upon the registered user using his or her "real name" for the login, which some people may not wish to do. The fact is you add your real name to the profile hence the showing of it? It needs to know what is the real name if you see what im saying of course.

That is probably not possible without major alterations to vBulletin (templates and core file edits).

It would not just stop working, something has to have changed on your forum to cause it to stop working. Did you upgrade vBulletin and/or install a new style?

No, it just uses a custom user profile field. The search would have to be hacked to search for user profile fields.

This looks great. :) I was wondering myself why there is no real name support in vbulletin and now asking google, I came around on this mod.
But, does this Mod support the your new fields for real name in the registration process?
If not, is it possible to extend it by another plugin?
I will import multiple User automatically and also set their real names beside the user name.
Maybe you can give me a little advice, how to update the fields for the realname through API.
Many thanks and greetings Bundschuh.
Edit: Ok, I recognized that this plugin does not delivers the real name fields in the postbits of mobile API responses.

How I can change location ? How to Show below Join Date ?
You can not with this hack, there are no template hooks just below the Join Date.
NOTE: The below is unsupported
But, you could always find this line in the postbit template:
{vb:raw template_hook.postbit_userinfo_right_after_posts}
and move it below this line:
<vb:if condition="$post['joindate']">
{vb:rawphrase join_date}

{vb:raw post.joindate}
</vb:if>

If you are interesting in this for just the postbit, then create a plugin hooked at "memberaction_dropdown" with the "Plugin PHP Code":
if (THIS_SCRIPT === 'showthread')
{
global $post;
$new_name = $post['field4'];
if ($new_name)
{
$memberinfo['musername'] = str_replace($memberinfo['username'], $new_name, $memberinfo['musername']);
$memberinfo['username'] = $new_name;
}
}
Change "field4" to the profile field you are using to store the user's real name.
edit: I changed to code to remove the call to a function containing a db query. :)

Primarilly, I need this to work when displaying the username on posts as well as when displaying the username in CMS articles. Is this going to do that?
I don't know...I don't use CMS. Give it a try...let us know. :)
edit: Try this instead...and if this doesn't work for CMS, I have another option for you to try.
if (in_array(THIS_SCRIPT, array('showthread', 'vbcms')))
{
global $post;
$new_name = $post['field4'];
if ($new_name)
{
$memberinfo['musername'] = str_replace($memberinfo['username'], $new_name, $memberinfo['musername']);
$memberinfo['username'] = $new_name;
}
}

The last bit of code works in the forums, but not in the CMS.
Ideas?

Okay, give this a try:
if (in_array(THIS_SCRIPT, array('showthread', 'vbcms')))
{
global $post;
if (!$post)
{
$post = fetch_userinfo($memberinfo['userid']);
}
$new_name = $post['field4'];
if ($new_name)
{
$memberinfo['musername'] = str_replace($memberinfo['username'], $new_name, $memberinfo['musername']);
$memberinfo['username'] = $new_name;
}
}

Unless I did somethig wrong, this does not do it either.
I changed field4 to field6 and just pasted it in "as is" plugin I added.

OK, weird.
When I look at the list of articles, the "Real Name" is displaying. However, when I bring the article up, it goes back to the "Username".

Well, I guess the CMS articles don't use the memberaction drop-down when displaying usernames...I assumed they would, but we all know what happens when we assume. :D
As I said, I don't use CMS so I have no idea how it displays usernames, but if you have a test/dev site online (with CMS) I would be willing to go there and see if I can get it to work. :)

My site is not officially up. So, feel free to go to http://www.hidingplace.com/forums/ and sign up for a new account. I will be notified when that happens, and then I will move you to the Administrator usergroup.
Thank you.

Okay, I registered and activated my account. Once I have admin access, I will begin investigating. You may see "weird" things going on from time to time as I run my investigations. :)

Okay, I got it to work:
if (in_array(THIS_SCRIPT, array('showthread', 'vbcms')))
{
if ($memberinfo['field6'])
{
$new_name = $memberinfo['field6'];
}
else
{
global $post;
if (!$post)
{
$post = fetch_userinfo($memberinfo['userid']);
}
$new_name = $post['field6'];
}
if ($new_name)
{
$memberinfo['musername'] = str_replace($memberinfo['username'], $new_name, $memberinfo['musername']);
$memberinfo['username'] = $new_name;
}
}
Please let me know if this takes care of what you wanted to do since you are more familiar with the system. :)

Sweet!! Thank you!! Now I can invite other people to the site to write articles and have their Real Name display on it. Nice!!!
Are you done on my site? Can I lower your access? I might need you again, who knows? Lol

I added two scripts to the array of script in which the plugin is active so the "Real Name" shows up on the memberaction dropdown there too.
Yes, as long as you are happy, I am done and you can reassign my account to another usergroup (best for security), and then if you need me again, you can put me back as an admin at that time. :)

BTW, I marked this as installed and voted for it as well.
Your demo link does not work. If you want, you can use my site as the demo link.
