View Full Version : Access restrictions based on VB license

I currently run a heavily-modded Snitz-based community (42 added mods, plus custome code) and am considering migrating it to vBulletin. However, that decision isn't easily made because I can't get access to view the hacks and mods available to vBulletin.

I completely understand that you want to prevent downloading unless the person has a VB license, but IMO you're doing people a disservice not to allow people to research what's available. Sure, you have a forum for pre-sales questions, but you certainly limit people from performing their own research...

Have you considered changing some of these restrictions?

I don't think they will otherwise all the mods some coders make only with permission to be used here could be easily ripped and spread around world wide. Currently I have several modifications packaged in nulled releases and I', livid over that.. I would not approve of this and in fact would remove all my mods from here if this was done. This is just me though, everyone is entitled to their opinion and we all must respect that. I see why you would want this naturally.. you can't even click to view a screenshot without a permissions notice so trust me I know from before I purchased I just don't agree with you and don't think they will either but as always this is imo.

The modification descriptions are available to you. Why would you need to actually download the code?

They aren't going to change this here.

Thanks for the replies, Lynne.

I am NOT asking for the ability to download the code. However, access to screenshots, for example would be most helpful.

The descriptions of the mods (in general) do NOT describe the fields added to the database nor the functions added to the code. Some do a good job of describing the added features, but MANY do not...

Without getting a sense of what has been added or changed, how can a newbie get any idea of what a mod does?

Exactly...

Combine that with very short descriptions (often without describing any features whatsoever), and no way to see a screenshot, I have essentially no clue what a mod might do...

Repeat -- I'm not looking for access to download code, only to determine if the available mods might somehow match the Snitz mods that I'm running well enough to make a migration feasible...

Some of the mods available do have live demos (which is better then screen shots). The reason why screenshots or basically image files aren't available for download is becuase there are times that the images are part of mod. Some developers do make their mods available from their own websites and/or screenshots too.

I fully understand that sometimes Developers put horrible or slim to non descriptions for mods and yes its hard to really understand what all the mod will and will not do. Especially when a screenshot would most likely answer all the questions, and I have this same thing just going from discontinued mods where the screenshots have been removed.

As stated before you can to try to contact the author, make s post in pre-sales for a demo of better description, also read the feedbacc from other members who have used or tried the mod and see what they say. You, in the end, have more then just 1 option.

I think someone reading the features of a mod doesnt need to know what changes are made to the database or changes in details to the code. I can definitely see if I want a mod just by what its described to do and some screenshots. Ive never needed to know what tables are added etc to the database.

Simple example -- what fields are added to the standard registration screen that the Admin can set up and require as mandatory fields.

Thanks for the understanding -- you've touched on many of my challenges, in trying to figure out what I can potentially do with mods versus what custom coding might be required.

Sounds like the only thing for you to do is buy a vB subscription and find out :)

I will say that on the majority of mods I have downloaded for my forum, they either had no screenshots, or the screenshots didn't do much to clarify what they really were. My recommendation is to look through the mods and PM the Coder. Don't expect to receive a response back because a lot of coders only answer questions in their threads so make sure you have an intriguing message title.
