How many of you are actually installing the beta? Been thinking about trying it out, but not sure yet.

If I'm not mistaking, we're allowed to have a 'test' forum for testing purposes, right?

I have it installed on local, trying to get a handle on the new stylevars for updating skins, WOW, it's going to be a long hard road.

Yes.

I'm still learning stylevars also. It's definitely looking good though.

Ill be installing it as a test site to see if I can tweak the style into something acceptable

my biggest gripe is that the usernames are much less prominant

We are not allowed a test site on the internet without a license for it, you need to set-up a test site on localhost using something like xampp.

That's what I believed as well, this very issue was raised on .com, Steve said that we were not allowed to do it, a test site on the net will need a license. I figure it's safer not to take the risk really, I took down my internet test site just in case! Everythng we could do on a net test site can be tested on localhost so we don't lose anything, it's up to the individual if they want to take the chance.

You are allowed a test installation, but it must not be available to the public. A public test forum would need a licence.

Installing for a friend to test today, had to save a forum last night who tried to upgrade :( https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=1914110 it seems Fresh Installs are going very well but upgrades are not... please DISABLE all mods before proceeding with it!!

No one should be trying to upgrade a LIVE forum, thats just asking for trouble. Its a beta, not a stable release.

I downloaded my forum and SQL db, running a local XAMPP server
with a identical copy of my sites, then upgradeing local before doing it live.

That way if a problem will occour, i know about it before i go live..
and by the time its going live, i would have worked around it aswell.

But unfortunally getting alot of problems upgradeing my "identical" backup of backup. :p
to 4.x and again fresh install is fine, but a hassle matching the db content from 3.8.

But im sure the guys at vb will come up with something fun before the gold release.

I am installing this on 2 sites. However, neither will be live till 4.0 is stable, which if the Jelsoft staff is correct should be before the end of the year. Lets all prey it is that soon.

If you're referring to what I think you are referring to, that was a thread where a skin designer had been running an illegal second installation to showcase his product.

That's not htaccess protected from the public.

My site is also live, I upgraded from a basic install of 3.84 with mods disabled, it's gone down well with the members as well, even though I had to start from scratch.

You know, I think you are right there, yes, and it would go a long way to explain my confusion at Paul's response. Oh well, localhost is good enough for me.

?

All vBulletin 4.0 Beta questions should be posted at vBulletin.com (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?147-vB-4-0-Beta) since they are the ones in charge of the software.

I will be testing this out on a test forum tomorrow. I'll do a clean install and then take it down and then upgrade my forum (still on the test site) to see how things are working out. I am interested in seeing how things look from the back end.

Still amazes me that people run Beta on their live sites. I understand the desire for a challenge, but I don't want to disrupt the flow of traffic my users generate because I decide to try something that isn't stable. Not to mention, there are only a few plug-ins I really need on my site and until they are updated for vB 4.0, no way am I switching over.

I would try it out if I could, since my vb3 license hasn't expired yet, but it doesn't look like I have access to download the beta. Can anyone confirm that you need to have pre-ordered vb4 to get the beta? I definitely don't want to pay extra money for the vB4 license at this time, since vB4 seems like an identical copy of vb3 with a re-worked backend and templating system. My site currently has over 100 modifications, some of them custom, and I don't think a conversion to vB4 would be possible without data & feature loss :(

You need to have purchased it to be able to download the Beta.

Yes.

I'm still learning stylevars also. It's definitely looking good though.

Might look easier to use, but I have to update about 10 different sites for ones I own, or am staff on, so I'm a little annoyed that theres not any way to use older styles.
