Overview

DTO Thread Move Notification is a free product that automatically sends thread authors a friendly private message when a moderator moves their thread to another forum. By automating the process this tool delivers a consistent moderation ?tone? in communicating with thread authors as well as speeding the task of moving threads. When set to active thread notifications are sent in the following ways:

If the thread is moved from a forum that the author can see to another that he/she can see the author will receive a notification via private message.
If the thread is moved from a forum that the author can see to another that he/she cannot see, the moderator performing the move will receive a private message notification reminder to contact the author and let them know why it was removed from the publicly visible forum.
If the thread is moved from a forum that the author cannot see to another that he/she can see the author will receive a notification.
If the thread is moved from a forum that the author can see to another that he/she can see and a redirect is left in the previous forum the author will receive a private message notification that includes text to inform them a redirect was left and the duration the redirect will remain active.

Robert,
Check it out and let me know what you think. Nathan and I have used a version of this on our respective sites for several years and it really seemed to keep our members happy when their threads were moved. Before that it was difficult to get our mods to take the time to send a note to the thread author. Without the note the author, when he couldn't find his thread, would get angry and stir up the rest of the community. This little mod seemed to keep everything on the site a little calmer.

Thanks!

Mark

Yes, I've installed this mod half an hour ago and its working fine. Indeed it is very importand to be consequent to the users. This mod is really helping a lot.

A bit off-topic, but a bit in line with this mod. I'm looking for a mod that sends an e-mail when a topic is deleted, whith the possibility to enter a reason for deletion.. This would also be a lot appreciated i think ;-)

Now on-topic again ;-)

This is a great idea. I'm gonna try it out.

Just one thing, why not implement other moderation actions like move, delete, combine, etc but not only threads but also por posts ?
May be e-mails traffic would increase but would be nice.

Good ideas. I'll consider this for future enhancements if others feel that it would be useful as well. To be honest in using this on several sites ourselves we never had the need to expand it beyond the thread move functionality. Regardless we'll give this some consideration for future releases.

Thanks!

Ever since I installed this, I've been getting this error on various pages. The only one I can think of at the moment is my Gameroom and my addonchat... There's only one other mod I installed at the same time I installed this one so I'm just trying to figure out what/which one is causing the problem?

Added additional check to insure that thread copy does not trigger thread move notification functions

I had this idea, specially to newbies that never used a forum plataform before and go around your site posting everywhere if you know what I mean. If expanded to several areas depending on the text you use on notification, you can give an educational character and not only moderation.

You could even include those levels on admin cp and choose each level will be turned on and off, I mean, if you want it only for moving threads, delete or moving posts, delete threads, etc.

Just an idea for the future.

The admin help file needs to be uploaded to admincp/
Also when I click on it I get a white screen.

Actually the file dto_threadmove_help.php should be delivered to your FORUMROOT directory and not admincp. The reason for this is that if you run something out of the admincp directory it uses a different global.php to set up the environment and you don't have everything you do when running from the forumroot.

I did realize that I had screwed up on the versioning and had forgotten to configure help on our server side. This resulted in the help not being found which could explain the issue you were seeing.

If you can verify that you have the dto_threadmove_help.php in your FORUMROOT then go into admincp and click on the documentation link. If you still don't get the help loaded please let me know if you happen to be running your admincp from a different directory that may be in some other location. We'll get this sorted out so everything is working properly.

Thanks!

I test by creating a user and then creating a thread by that user. Then log in as admin and move the thread. If you have Save PM on send you will have one in the saved PM box as the admin. The user should have one in their unread box.

Thats for moving a thread from a publicly visible location to another publicly visible location. If moving to a forum that is not a publicly visible location the admin should receive a PM informing them to contact the member as to why it was moved along with a reminder not leave a redirect.

I tested on 3.6.8, 3.7.4, 3.8.3 and 3.8.4.

mferguson
11-02-2009, 07:09 PM
The way I test is:

Have two browsers open. I use Firefox and Safari for my testing but you can use IE and Chrome, etc. You just need two browsers running.

1) With one browser login as an admin
2) I have a test account (TestUser) that is a member of the registered users group. With the other browser login as TestUser
2) TestUser creates a thread in Forum A
3) With the other browser (administrator) view this thread and under the Thread Tools menu select Move Thread
4) Select a publicly visible forum (Forum B) to move the thread
5) Go back to TestUser's browser and check private messages. There should be a new one indicating the move.

Is it possible to disable the PM notification after a thread is moved outside of user accesible areas?

Thanks...

mferguson
11-05-2009, 01:20 PM
With the current version only the moderator is sent a PM when the thread is moved outside of a user accessible areas. The thread author does not receive any PM in this case. Only if/when the thread was moved back to an accessible area is the author sent a PM.

In my case I just wanted to make sure that if we moved the thread outside of the accessible areas that I made sure that the moderator took the time to determine if a follow up was needed. Often if they didn't follow up the author would notice quickly that the thread was missing and the it vanished without explanation...angering them. If the moderator got the reminder PM and then messaged them with an explanation the thread author was usually very understanding.

All the above said I can modify this to ad other behaviors and configuration options. If you (and othes) can tell me how you want to use it on your site it will provide me some direction on how best to support those needs.

Thanks!

Mark

On our forum we move junk posts to a 'trash' forum and it's an important part of discouraging SPAM for the author to be notified, so this is functionality I would very much like to see and the moderator doesn't need to be notified in our case...

mferguson
11-05-2009, 10:09 PM
So would this feature be boiled down to the following:

- include a setting in Thread Move to always show to/from information on thread moves.
- in the case that a thread is being moved to a non-visible forum just don't provide links to the forum or thread (like you do when to/from forums are visible to the author)

I like the notion of telling them through the PM that "Your thread has been moved to the Trash forum" as that probably is a very good deterrent.

Let me know if I have this captured correctly.

Thanks!

mferguson

We haven't identified any conflicts to date but I would like to work with you to figure out what is going on. To insure that the the PMs are being sent can you:

Have two browsers open. I use Firefox and Safari for my testing but you can use IE and Chrome, etc. You just need two browsers running.

1) With one browser login as an admin
2) I have a test account (TestUser) that is a member of the registered users group. With the other browser login as TestUser

3) With the other browser (administrator) view this thread and under the Thread Tools menu select Move Thread
4) Select a publicly visible forum (Forum B) to move the thread
5) Go back to TestUser's browser and check private messages. There should be a new one indicating the move.

If you find that no PMs are being sent it could point to a problem where the phrase group is not getting properly loaded and I can dig in with you further to determine the cause. PM me with your findings on the above testing and we'll work to get this fully operational for you.

Thanks!

Cool mod. I need 2 features before I can use it on my board though.

The first is the feature Hugh suggested: sending the User a PM when a thread is moved to an inaccessible Trash forum.

The second would be to have a radio button when moving to turn off the PM feature for that move. We often mass move expired threads to an accessible Expired Forum, so that could result in hundreds of PMs being sent to users and dozens being sent to a single user. The users already have the expectation that those threads would be moved, so a PM is unnecessary.

Thanks for the mod! Look forward to using it soon!

On this second request do you see this as an option that you select when you have the form up that allows you to select where the thread will be moved or somewhere else?

What about it stating a reason why it was moved? Does it do that?

Like the option above would you want to see this on the initial destination selection form or somewhere else?

If you can both give me some feedback on the workflow that would be most effective I'll investigate to determine how best to implement it.

Thanks for the feedback!

If you could make it that if the mod/admin moving the thread can either write a reason in a text box or leave it blank. If left blank, it would not state any reason to the author. If there is something filled out, it would send it to the author saying it was moved for this reason.

Another thing would be who moved it. Unless it does say that already.

I don't expect we'll have another release until sometime in January. With the holidays, vBulletin consulting project, and preparing a new release of our ShowCase product I'm a bit further behind than I had hoped to be right now.

That said what I'm considering for this release include the following:

- ability to use from inline moderation interface
- disable notification form the "redirect options" screen
- option to notify thread author even if it is being moved to non-visible forum (ie - Trash)

Currently we are working to bring all of our paid modifications to the 4.0.x level. Once complete we intend on cycling through all modifications to add features.

If you will mark this as installed I can provide you assistance. With that in mind it does not currently support threadmoves from the thread list view. You must be viewing the thread and then issue a thread move from the Thread Tools drop-down menu.

After I get through our vB4 work for our paid products I'll be revisiting this and making numerous improvements.

Thanks

Mark

I have updated this for some of our sites so there is an option to select to notify the user (default checked) or you can uncheck the box and not notify the user of the move.

Feel free to incorporate into the new product.

Ok, we had to further update this product to work with inline moderation. Now you can notify users when moving mass threads, or uncheck a box to not notify them. To the author, feel free to use these mods, no credit necessary..

Nothing yet. Still working on getting our main products to vB4 before being able to revisit this one. Thanks for your patience.

This is what I was looking for,
did the original author (mferguson) update it with this option ?

Thanks,,

I have not been able to supply an update to this yet as I am currently working to bring all of our paid products onto vB4. After those have been released I'll address this add-on.

Thanks

What happens if you move a post and create a thread will it notify the member?

If not can this be setup to do this? Or perhaps what other option.

We have to move a lot of single posts into their own threads.

Thanks

So long as the post is moved into an area that is visible by the member that created they will be notified. A link to the new thread/post will be sent to the user in the notification.

If it moved to an area that is not visible by the post creator the user moving the post will receive a PM reminding them to send a PM to the OP that the post has been moved.

I tried that and it is not notifying anyone. When I move a thread it does but not a post.

Something I am doing wrong? I don't see the box that says notify when I move a post with the inline moderator tool

Thanks for your help

To be honest it's been some time since we touched the product. I'll have to do some testing to see what it does on our own sites. Please bear with me while I do so.

I saw you posted in our forums as well.

Not working on 3.8.7.
I have tested it on 2 admins, by moving thread (one with expire redirect and one with no-redirect) and nothing happened.

It supposed to send a PM to the autor of the threads informing him of the modification/move of the thread, right?
