This is a new support group community for both adults, and for parents/family members of children, who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Asperger Syndrome (AS), Autism, and related neurobiological disorders.
We're not here to give medical advice (I posted a disclaimer). Altho this site has been in the thought stages for over 1 year, I was actually spurred to action by a bedtime conversation with my son, who is diagnosed with ADHD and AS.
One night at bedtime, as I was sitting on my son's bed and we were talking, he asked me, "Mom, why do I need fixing? I am me. Isn't that good enough?". This, of course, brought me to tears. My answer was very simple. "Yes son, you are good enough. In fact, you are quite wonderful!. I have no need to "fix" you. I just want to help you be the best YOU, that you can be. Is that ok with you?".
His answer - "Sure! 'cuz I need to be me". (Can you guess where the name came from?) ;)
Too often we're so busy chasing the cure, or the perfect med or combo thereof, that we forget to help them be the best they can be just as they are, and accept their eccentricities, habits, hyperactivity, rituals, etc without trying to fix them or change them. Consequently they feel that they're broken somehow, not good enough, etc. and they become confused, depressed and withdrawn.
INTBM hopes to help. This is a site where people with these disorders - and those who love them - can come to vent, laugh, cry, share experiences and advice, meet new people, and forge new friendships, with those who understand and care.
