Default Avatar

This plugin will make a default avatar show for all users if the user does not have an avatar. This works in the postbit, profiles, and members list. It uses the image "images/misc/unknown.gif" by default, which is used in several locations for the same purpose, and works on vB 3.7+ and vB4. This is editable in the Admin CP under vBulletin Options -> User Picture Options -> Default Avatar Image Location.

Updates:
1.0 - 3.5 release by Zachery - unsupported.
2.0 - Initial 3.7+ release.
2.0.1 - Slight bugfix relating to users disabling avatar display. This setting does not affect avatars on the profile or memebers list by default, so this addon should not take it into account for those pages.
2.0.2 - Added a setting to control the location of the image. See the updated description for details.

Works on profile page, works on the members list without forcing it to display avatars when you disabled them. I'd say this "disadvantage" if there would be one is I did not add a setting to change the path of the file - mainly because unknown.gif is already used elsewhere for the same purpose.

This is basically just an upgrade and bug-fix of Zachery's version that I put together and made work correctly.

Not too large of a bug, but something that just wasn't consistent. Just re-upload the new product.xml and allow overwrite to upgrade.

We had been using an earlier default avatar mod which as someone said only uses one avatar location. Before uploading your XML, I edited it to point to our own custom default avatar, and it seems to be working fine. There ought not be any problems pointing to a different image file, no?

Nope, just remember that you'd have to do it again if there was another update released. Of course, this is one of those addons small enough that I can say that I am confident that it won't need another release.

Does this hack need many ressources?
Nope. Very simple plugins of 3-4 lines each. Just simple conditional statements.

I just pushed out another update to this - 2.0.2: "Added a setting to control the location of the image. See the updated description for details."

The option in question is located in the Admin CP under vBulletin Options -> User Picture Options -> Default Avatar Image Location. If you want to change it from the default image to something else, that will be where you should do it.

It updated like a charm. I wasn't sure how the default icon location would work, so before uploading and installing the 2.02 update I edited the icon file name and path to match my criteria. I like that it now lists the option in the AdminCP for the default icon, so it can easily be changed at will. Thanks!

This works on all pages that "ZH - No Avatar" works on plus member profiles.

It doesn't work with profile pictures, but that's not the point of the product. Not a bad idea for consideration for either an option for this product or another mini product.

I really like this mod, but I have 1 request.

Would it be possible to be able to define which usergroups (through usergroup id's i guess) the default avatar works with. Such as only allowing the default avatr to work with usergroups 1,2,3 etc.

Suggestion: If a user has no avatar (and is displaying the default avatar), when he clicks on his own avatar, it should take him to profile.php?do=editavatar

The arcade would be out of the scope for this product unfortunately. I haven't looked at the arcade's code to know if it has hooks or not in the proper places, but it'd more than likely take a code modification to the arcade to change its behavior.

Now I have installed vBadvanced and my vBulletin forum has been moved to www.mysite.com/forums (http://www.mysite.com/forums)..................... Now I am having a problem.

The default avatar on the friend's block is actually not done by this addon, it's done by default. Disable the product and notice that it'll still show there. Not sure how to get it to resize it properly, but that's out of the scope of this addon.

One way I can think of is to resize the current unknown.gif, and then reupload the full-sized version as a different name. Then, change the "default avatar location" setting provided by this product.

I noticed earlier when a member who hadn't selected their avatar placed a comment that the default avatar was again larger than the 'normal' after installing this mod. So, both the friend block and the 'visitor message' are not within the scope of this addon.

I'll attempt your fix as long as everything will work for me as it should :)

Downloaded updated to include the vB4 thread as the "homepage" of the product and added a version check URL. Nothing else changed. The same product will function on both vB3 and vB4.

The product XML files for these mods are usually uploaded via the AdminCP's "Plugins and Products" / "Manage Products" / "Add-Import Product" feature. Hasn't anyone assisted you with this yet?

This hack could not cause that error. I haven't seen that error before.

If you uninstalled it, it certainly isn't running anymore, and it makes no database changes. Furthermore, even if you kept it installed, it works just the same on vB4 as it does on vB3.

I don't know the cause of your error or how to resolve it, only that it isn't caused by this mod.

I would also be delighted to learn how Photopost could also benefit from this mod.
As it is at the moment those without avatars in the forum have a standard one but when in Photopost it vanishes.

None of us (geekydesigns) people have access to photopost. Personally not a big fan of their licensing model, so unfortunately I do not forsee any intergration on that level.
