Replacement variables

I'm using these instead of the default censorship which is not very flexible. What if I want to censor a word a short word eg 'table' but don't want it censored out of other words such as 'vegetable'? I just want to replace the stand alone words, rather than the same grouping of letters in larger words.
Any ideas how to do this?

Have you tried writing the word (and replacement word) with a space in front and in back of it? (Not sure if it will work, but it's worth trying.)
