Show Groups Customization

In version 3.7.3 or 3.7.0 I previously had customised the show groups template to include an additional column that displayed the the rank image of each user, using $user[rank] next to each persons name in the list.

However, since updating to 3.8.3 that rank image no longer displays.

Apparently that variable is no longer available to the showgroups template, how can I make it available again?
