I am trying to verify my site on google- so that it is added to google's search engine.
They state i should copy and paste the meta tag into my sites Home Page?
1) Is it a advantage to do this?
2) Is it something you have to do, to show up on the search engine?
3) If i need to do it, How do i get to my sites Homepage & where do i paste the meta tag?
Basically whats the best way to get my site on the search engines.

Can you please copy the meta tag here.
If I am correct, you will also have the option to upload a HTML file to your forum.
If this IS the case, then all this is, is a method of Google seeing that your site exists and that it should crawl it. Therefore, it would impact you as you wouldn't be able to get indexed properly without this verification. It is a method to verify your site is correct and YOU actually own the site as you would be the one with power to do the editing.
As for where you put it, simply place it anywhere between the <head></head> tags in your html file, or if you are using vBulletin, open up the 'headerinclude' template for your chosen skin and then copy it to the top (you will see several other meta tags there).
Hope this helps.

To verify, I think you have to. Please show me which tag it is.

If you are using VB, just paste the metatag into the 'headinclude' template of your default style. You can delete it after google verifies that it was there, they just want you to verify that the site is yours before they allow you to take advantage of all the statistics and things it gives webmasters about their sites.
And you don't need the meta tag for search engines to find your site organically, but you cannot take advantage of the tools they give you or submit your sitemap and etc unless you do.

my forum is run by a host therefore i dont think; from what i can see, that i can paste the meta tag as google state i should.
This is what they tell me to do -
Before we show detailed stats and information about your site, we need to know you're really the site owner.

Verification method Meta tag HTML file
Copy the meta tag below, and paste it into your site's home page. It should go in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.

Yes, you need to add that. Is that an example of what you have done?
With vB just add it to the top of headinclude
