Hi vB.Org

Long years since the same design vbulletin default whats going on box without avatars active users etc.. It is very boring to me since long years of use the same design so I had made one for myself for fun :D

Do you like this one?

I know you like this one ;)

Should I release this ?

Yes I will release this for free at vb.org but I'm not finished right now.
There are still missing 2 columns (today's registered members and today's visited members.) :D

Are there any 4.0 demos online yet?

Marco van Herwaarden

I would probably not use such a modification. It might be nice with only a few members online, but i guess this can kill performence or bandwidth when a lot of users are online.

No man it requires only 1 query for every columns on forumhome

I never even mentioned the word query. ;)

But if you are going to add things like avatars, then this can have a big impact on performence (do they need to be resized?), memory usage (all these avatars into memory, retrieving from either disk or database) and bandwidth (all these images must alos be sent to the client).

Consider a board with over 1.000 users online.

Yes man youre right now but I had previously added a vboption whether they wants to turn ON or OFF the avatars that is their decision. what can I do else?

I agree with Marco in that large sites may not want to use this, but I do think it's a nice modification.

it would be cool if we can list what columns we want to appear, and what we don't.

It's a nice enough script, (not something I would use) I don't like to overcrowd the index area too much. I think layout wise there's room for improvements.

I think with whos_online next gen scripts you have to keep the data simple. In my opinion, top ten posts and thread starters shouldn't even make it in this script. Keeping the whos online data should be the only statistical data on view.

I mean, I could be saying this and you have in the options of being able to disable the top ten posts/threadstarters. I know I don't care who posted how much or who created the most thread in X days.

Don't get me wrong, nice work. in my eyes I would regard this as bloat and unneeded data on the index page where more useful information could be put. The space this is using is simply overkill.

Like I said, regardless of my views I'm sure many people would use this so for that nice work Hasaan.

Like it, but maybe a bit too bulky for me with the scrolling.

What about showing the standard usernames in standard layout, and doing something like this in the thead:
Currently Active Users: 704 (193 members and 511 guests) Show Avatars
(When the link is clicked it shows avatars only with alt tags that show usernames)

and if avatars are selected:
Currently Active Users: 704 (193 members and 511 guests) Show User Names
(When the link is clicked it shows usernames only)

Obviously selected state remembered via cookie, and Admincp settings on:
Which way to show as default
What size avatars to display
Colums/Rows

Then someone can create a vbadvanced module that works the same way :D

^I love that idea.

Though I prefer the usernames, but I like that it has so many things for "Today's" in one area

I like this idea....
I feel if you were to merge the two left columns together and make it where it shows 4 columns of usernames with the option to turn avatars on or off, and then you have the option to pick what you want the third column, this mod would be excellent!

Instead of the avatars i would use a ajax popup with an "mini profile(avatar, last online, etc)" like ipb.
So the avatars wouldn't load everytime, only when the user realy "want" to see them.

Liking this idea, nice Ragtek.
Going off his idea, if you do this onmouseover pop-up you could do like a business-card style. Last online time, total posts, total threads, avatars etc.

Yes, that's what i meant;)

I'm hopping that vb4 will have the feature like ipb3 and that addon coder could use it where ever they want

Ok so do what I do sometimes... create a public yet joinable usergroup then wrap the old and new What's going on in a conditional.. If this usergroup else this and that way some users if it affects them loading/performance can simply join the group to revert back to the old WOL or you could have it as regular and when they join it shows them advanced WOL.

Either way it's a quick join or remove themself from the group, I do this all the time especially w/ some flash stuff as some complain about the sites loading when at work vs home.

Hmmmm I think there should be the option to have the users online part or not. Im loving the other parts, like top thread starters and so on. but im not really loving the users online part. I like the default way better in my opinion.

Looks okay and some people would use it but I wouldn't... It is very bulky and having multiple scroll bars on the screen doesn't appeal to me.

Consider a board with over 1.000 users online.

If you have 1000 users online you're going to need your own dedicated server. If you have your own dedicated server you can probably use memcache, and put this kind of data in memcache because memory's so cheap.

Alternatively you could use the modern scroll and load more data in each column. You preload 5-10 users in the online users box, then when the user's scroll offset is almost at the bottom, load 5-10 more.

I can understand why you're saying it could be a performance issue, but it doesn't necessarily have to be one with the correct approach :)

I completely agree, I think having content boxes with scrollbars within a page that has a scrollbar is a bad idea.

Really, most uses of scrollbars within pages like this are a bad idea in my opinion. I believe most people do not want to read content in a little box, they want to be able to quickly scan over content with their eyes, instead of having to actually interact with the content in order to read only portions of the content at a time.

This would be cool if you didn't have the online users one. Only because it is a huge con for big sites. If you are going to display who is online then you should only display a random 5 or 10 and then have a See all online users... link at the bottom.

first of all: 3 extra queries per page is a lot dude. However, I guess you could use a cronjob once a minute to cache the results.

But still that would use a lot of extra memory/size per page.

Then there is the fact that it's just not interesting information.
The first column shows all the online users in a small list, if there are more than 500 users online, who will go through that list??

The second and third column may be a reason for people to spam with a lot of short messages and stupid threads.

What if you only display the first 25 users' avatars, and they have to click a button to reload the column with the next 25? That would solve the performance issue I'd imagine... and they would have to scroll down to see more users anyway, might as well make them click a button
