Categories Collapsed by default

in vbulletin.com forums it's mentioned that there's no way that we can set the default view in the forumhome to show categories as collapsed, so it always show the list of child forums

Is there any hack or mod that I can use to change that

I want to categories as collapsed in the forumhome and then the user would get to choose to expand it if they like

IF you collapse them by default, users who do not allow JS will not be able to expand them.

You don't have to show the subforums. Play with vboptions > forum listing display options > Depth of Forums - Forum Home and the next two options.
