How to combat spam?

I´m having one spammer every week, its annoying, I don´t know how they have the time to join the board wait for confirmation code, create an account, etc. Just to post spam messages that I am going to delete and then ban them.

But is there more ways to combat them?

There is no 'person' registering, they are using bots, so the time it takes is irrelevant.

But how do they get passed the visual confirmation code?.

the bots are getting better at captchas then people ;)
