Are unused avatars automatically removed from storage/database?

Does vBulletin automatically remove uploaded avatars that are no longer in use (user changed his avatar ect.)? I would assume it does but I can't find a definitive answer anywhere. Can anyone tell me if it does this and when and where exactly it does this?

I dont think they remove them, but its saved in the database.

They do get removed otherwise your avatar directory would get huge from users uploading new avatars all the time. They also aren't saved in the database, the field gets the contents replaced.
